Oh NO! They're NOT LIKE US! | 12:07 p.m. May 13, 2008
Oh my gosh, all this angst about... not enough pictures on their walls, we don't like the people in their pictures, they don't have enough toys, etc!

Why don't you just come out and say it... THEY'RE NOT LIKE US... so they SHOULD be PUNISHED!

If you think these minor infractions are good justification for the way they are being treated then there is more truth to the rumor that they are being punished mainly for being different than other Texans than I thought.

We are justified in taking their kids because...
-They gave their kids schedules?
-Their kids like to work?
-They don't have Nintendo?
-They didn't give their kids enough toys?
-They don't have enough pictures on the walls?
-The chairs at their dinner table look uncomfortable?

Give me a break!

Punish them for child abuse (but you gotta prove it first), but PLEASE get off the fashion, life-style, home decoration violations. They aren't un-fit parents because they don't decorate the way you do or because they don't dress the way you do, or because they gave their child a schedule!

"I'm just wondering why this is news. With the number of those girls who are pregnant, this is bound to happen pretty often."

It's news because it's part of the story of what's happening with the FLDS children.

Of the dozens of stories published everyday in the DN, you chose to read this particular story, which shows that even you thought that this story was newsworthy.

while i agree that they are using women as baby machines, i do not agree that taking a baby away from its mother is right. also, polygamy is against the law. they do not have valid marriage liscenses for all these marriages. they are saying they are spiritual marriages. hm. while i do not agree with the flds or the lds ways, it seems to me that texas is going a little bit crazy with this. i am going to leave this one to my Lord and Saviour.

Perspective | 12:14 p.m. May 13, 2008
I wonder if anyone has tried to reflect on this story, put yourself in her shoes and put this story into perspective.

How many of you mothers know how it feels to have children who want to see you for Mother's Day but can't (maybe they are in the Military, or on Missions, etc). At least they are old enough to take care of themselvs and they got to call you to make sure you knew they were OK.

Now put yourself in this 22 year old mother's position... She gives birth the day after Mother's Day and government agents are there at her bed-side waiting to take the newborn child away from her as soon as it is born. Her only violation... being FLDS. Doesn't that sound a little Draconian?

Imagine you are one of the other mothers... The child who can't see you or even call you for Mother's Day isn't a soldier or a missionary... He is a 5 year old, you have no idea where he is today, what he is doing, did he want to call you, what are the people who have him telling him about you and why he can't see you?
Hard to judge | 12:16 p.m. May 13, 2008
I'm not sure anybody else took the time to read the actual general guidelines issued by the FLDS, and the publisher of this article neglected to tell the whole story. Here is the excerpt as published in the guidelines.

"Suggested Activities: Children who are just learning to walk love to help wash doorknobs,
benches, cupboards, etc. Blocks, (too big to swallow), puzzles that have true pictures, alphabet
magnets, etc., are used in the childs development. Digging in the dirt with a small shovel, jumping
on a re-bounder, pushing a wagon, planting seeds, folding washcloths, etc., are things the children
can do to grow up healthy and strong. Children use simple kindergarten pages to learn to draw lines
and write their names. Although the children seem young, they are very bright and understand more
than adults realize."

I'm not trying to defend the FLDS practices or beliefs, but the amount of judgement being thrown out on both sides, without the entire story, troubles me.

i was just reading the guidlines for the flds children and i am shocked. do the fathers do anything but make babies? sounds like the mothers are the entire backbone of the community. the men are nothing but breeders. yes, i took care of my seven children but my husband helped. sounds like a cult to me.
Colonias | 12:23 p.m. May 13, 2008
As one mental health professional testifies that in Texas's Colonias (very poor communities near the Mexican boarder) there are a lot of ELEVEN year olds who are pregnant by MUCH older men and no CPS raids have occured here. CPS has yet to produce even a 15 year old who is or was pregnant within the last few years. I read the testimonies of the mental health workers and am shocked. Texas and CNN almost had me believing the women were brainwashed. I read one professional's testimony on what brainwashed is and we are all brainwashed she admitted. I guess it is only a crime if it is not OUR brainwashing. As far as chores, these toddlers are not washing door knobs all day (and what is hazardous about that?..I bet the children are monitored and supervised). I almost wonder if our modern toys and raising of children is not harmful to their maturity. Looking at history we are producing the most lazy, immature, irresponsible, and daft community of young people. There is nothing "abusive" about teaching responsibility at an early age..it makes it a part of every day life instead of later as in inconvienence or optional.
Lets compare shall we... | 12:24 p.m. May 13, 2008
From just the small portion of the "guidebook" it does not take much to realize that the kids from the compound are much better off than most kids in America. Why? Let list the differences...

1. Wake up early vs sleep in till 10
2. Pray to God vs text messaging friends
3. Eat breakfast with family vs a pop-tart and leave for school.
4. Time spent learning how to help around the house at a young age vs doing nothing at all to help out at home
5. Read from holy scripture vs listening to iPod
6. Eat two more meals with family vs grabbing fast food with friends, or snacking all day and watching tv.

I would much rather raise my kids with those core values rather than the dependance on government and others that exists in society today.

Okay, so they don't have any modern toys...big deal! Those kids are far more creative playing with eachother, then needing toys to stimulate creativity.

These people have had their rights violated and need to be allowed to return home with their families. Perhaps we should go after the young unwed mothers the same way as these people.
Saddens me | 12:30 p.m. May 13, 2008
Do these kids even have time to play and be kids? Or they training to be "small adults".

Its great to learn responsibility, but come on...
Re: No Toys | 12:31 p.m. May 13, 2008
My children LOVE to feed the chickens and beg to do so every day and go "egg hunting"... Too bad you think this is abusive and "poor children". My children also BEG (literally) to wash the windows and vacuum. I am not FLDS and I am in a very big urban city and my children play with toys but they will choose feeding chickens over their Hotwheels. I am sorry you think that children like mine are abused for enjoying to feed chickens.
a teacher | 12:30 p.m. May 13, 2008
I think that the idea of introducing discipline and activities such as cleaning doorknobs for infants, working outdoors on the farm, and having a daily schedule and routine, is an optimal way to prepare children for any sort of real world life.

When my son was growing up we always made a game of being in some environment, such as outside in the woods, or sitting on the floor in the attic, or at a pond side, and we'd spend a couple hours playing with what ever we found - rocks, sand, pieces of wood, bent nails, paper, leaves, etc. We had no need of manufactured "toys." All that being said, I certainly bought him some manufactured toys from time to time, but our favorite memories of play still involve our time using natural and found materials in creative ways. This method also teaches freedom of choice.

The FLDS people are Christians who follow the bible. They may not interpret some passages the same as I and other Christians do, but on the whole they work hard at it. They seem to be subject to unreasonable attack on every front, besides the obvious areas of breaking Texas law.

No time for play... | 12:40 p.m. May 13, 2008
if you're an FLDS child.

"Children who are just learning to walk love to help wash doorknobs, benches, cupboards"

No wonder one of the FLDS men, Willie Jessop, who has more than a dozen wives and dozens and dozens of children, can afford to drive around in his unique white Mercedes SUV.

Two-year-olds are back home cleaning up the mess he left behind.

These 22 year old Girls need to be released and collect damages from Texas
I hope all of them sue Texas

Warren Jeffs drove around in a nice car and wore "normal clothes"

Willie Jessop drives a nice car too. The families obviously don't have nice things, but the leaders do?

Talk about a bunch of hypocrites
hmmm | 12:58 p.m. May 13, 2008
the FLDS cult finds it hard to recruit members from the outside world so it must add members(and future childbrides) by having children...the lack of outside DNA has created the horrible fumarase birth defect (paid for by the state of Arizona)
the indoctrination must start as soon as possible...
so when any outsider asks any question. they will be able to lie in that sing-song voice
"we love our children"

Rod Parker, a Salt Lake City attorney acting as a spokesman for the FLDS Church, said Child Protective Services workers were trying to move the mother from the Austin shelter where she has been staying with her other children to a shelter in San Antonio.

Parker said a judge refused to move the woman whom he identified as Louisa Jessop, 22 scheduling a court hearing for this morning.

some of you may want to RE READ the article.. The tried to move this 22 year old mother who just gave birth to another shelter in San Antonio with Her OTHER CHILDREN .. how many children does this 22 year old girl have???
Get the FLDS Men | 1:11 p.m. May 13, 2008
None of this would be happening if the authorities had of taken the men into custody instead of the women. This whole problem is the fault of the lamebrain men. The FLDS men are COWARDS in the biggest way, and need to be dealt with.

I totally agree with 12:58 pm Hummm.

This is a HOSTAGE SITUATION that needs to end! I continue to call for the reunion of the families in the absense of evidence of specific crimes committed by specific people.

p.s. Kids alway have toys--they create them out of anything...if they're not too distracted by adult-made ones!

Re: No Time to Play | 1:16 p.m. May 13, 2008
Actually go to captivefldschildren and read the 0-2 year old statement before you quote someone else. Read the sentence right after the one you "quoted" and you will see that they play with toys... Please do your research first. You are helping spread half truths of their complete statements.

Re: David S | 1:36 p.m. May 13, 2008
"This is a HOSTAGE SITUATION that needs to end!"

I couldn't agree more. Freeing the women and children who have been held as brainwashed hostages in the FLDS compound should be done as quickly as possible.

Freeing these innocent people, especially the children, from the clutches of these sexually abusive, controlling old men should be the paramount concern of Texas CPS.

General Guidelines for FLDS Children Ages 0-2 Years

"Children use simple kindergarten pages to learn to draw lines and write their names. Although the children seem young, they are very bright and understand more than adults realize."

Does anyone else see the contracdiction between the FLDS guidelines that include teaching their children to write their own names when they're still less than 2-years-old, and, the children being unable to identify themselves and their mothers to CPS?

Could it be that these loving FLDS parents also spent a great deal of time teaching their children how to lie to authorities?
L | 1:57 p.m. May 13, 2008
Ladies, do you really think a woman is happy sharing a husband and working for him for free? NO!! How would you like to be transferred from one man to the next based on the fact your girls are now in their teens and your new "husband" you are assigned to wants free access to them? People need to wake up to realize this one "fundamental" thing. Many of their faces have etched sadness on them that look work weary and depressed despite the fact their children are in custody. The women need to be rescued right along with their children. This is not a harmless group. They are held captive despite what the women say and despite what the women think. Many have probably never seen the ocean or been able to swim in one. They are not free.
Laughable | 1:58 p.m. May 13, 2008
citing the FLDS propaganda website...wow that's a fair and balanced website if you tell me.

I find it interesting that there's no older children in those photos.

Willie Jessop is a criminal, you really believe everything that comes out of his mouth? He drives a mercedes while everyone slaves away for him at the ranch.

what? | 2:02 p.m. May 13, 2008

No Toys? | 2:08 p.m. May 13, 2008
And kids doing their chores? Where do I get one of these women to come into MY home and teach my kids? I've adopted 8 kids from fostercare, and can't seem to get them to lift a finger! All they want to do is sit around and watch TV (which is why it has been removed).

No toys means less for me to pick up. Kids doing their chores wth a smile? Now THAT could be a dream!
In my own home | 2:15 p.m. May 13, 2008
My husband, my kids father, is not home all day. The majority falls on me. His 'contact' or 'involvement' happens between 6:30 and 8pm, when it's the kiddies bedtime. In that hour and a half, we have dinner, do homework, work on projects, etc. So, to see the 'dad's' are not around, it's because they are WORKING. New concept. Work. I guess that's how they keep things running round there. Can't have that, now can we?
Old Geezer in Vegas | 2:31 p.m. May 13, 2008
Oh I see it now!! Last week she was a minor and now shes an adult. Thats so transparent!!! It was just a ruse to get her newborn.

Surely in this great nation theres some constitutional attorney that will take on this whole mess and put the employees of state of Texas and its Gestapo CPS in its place. That place should really be behind bars!!!

My children have more toys than I did growing up and do you know what they want to do most? Help me with the chores.
Please stop lumping the FLDS with the LDS. There's an F in front for a reason.

The major diffence between your home and most FLDS homes is in your home, your husband only has one family to come home to. If you lived in the FLDS community, he would have at least 3 wives, and probably more.

So your children would actually get to see their father maybe once or twice week. With 20 or more children, your husband would actually share some quality time with your children... almost never.

But, he would somehow find time to figure out which of his friends to give your 13-year-old daughter to.

You people with your concerns about being "programmed". My Father (a Methodist) programmed me from a tiny age. I would go to college when I grew up. I would keep my room clean. I would do my chores. I would have no input in the matter. I would work for my allowance. I would give in the collection plate at church on Sunday mornings WHETHER I LIKED IT OR NOT. I would not be allowed to date until I was 16. I would NEVER drink under any circumstances. I would not sass my Mother. I would NEVER smoke. I would do as I was told.

Every day I thank God for the kind, loving and STRICT man he was - and I miss him daily.
What happened to tolerance? | 5:06 p.m. May 13, 2008
What happened to the people who are usually preaching tolerance of those who are different, even if we find their life-style abhorant?

Instead, today we have people judging them because the chairs at the dinner table have streight backs, or because we didn't see enough toys in the video on the news, or we didn't like the pictures on the wall, or the way they decorate, or whatever!

The issue is "Child Abuse", lets stick to it and leave out all the irrelevant comments about what you saw on the video on TV that is an obvious indication to you that these people are guilty, and you proof is... not enough toys, hard chairs, etc?
Turn the mirror around | 5:18 p.m. May 13, 2008
Recently I have heard: The kids dont have toys, their cloths depict rank, their hair style has meaning, they water-board their kids, and more. Lets apply the same to us. Do cloths and hair have influence in our world? A few nights ago I saw a news clip for water-babies. The expert dunked infants underwater and it was a good thing. Lets take all the FLDS kids, give them a bowel of Captain-Crunch, put them in front of a Nintendo, expose them to TV commercials, and let them watch Wife-Swap. Then they will be normal. Military strategists will tell you to demonize you opponent if you want to win a battle. Sounds like we have done this to the FLDS people.
mypc46 | 5:23 p.m. May 13, 2008
There are so many competing thoughts about how these children were raised and how they should be it is mindboggling. What happened to my generation when dr spock wrote his bs book and we were deprived of mothers milk and a mom who would pick us up? So now there are so many experts out there. What happened to a right to raise kids how you want to. Which cavewoman had to give her kids toys? Only in the last century have kids been coddled. Which means kids at 18 helpless to stand on their own 2 feet. Many still home and so lazy they stink. How about all of you look at your own lives and improve your parenting skills. As for cps ...you are liars and thieves! Sellers of flesh as well.
To Turn Athe mirror arround | 5:35 p.m. May 13, 2008
At least they would know who their Mom and dads are. And they wouldn't learn that they are only meant to be baby machine slaves to some old man someday. They would as well have their freedom to marry who they please. So perhaps you should look in the mirror.

AND THE FLDS DO PLENTY OF WIFE SWAPPING! I KNOW!

"Children who are just learning to walk love to help wash doorknobs, benches, cupboards, etc.," said the guidelines for children ages 0-2 years.

It's sad that they can't let their kids be kids.
What are you talking about, that they can't be kids? Children love to "help". Do you think that they are taking the place of an adult cleaning? Maybe they dont get to eat if they dont polish that knob shiny enough?. My son's favorite fun was opening the pot cupboard and having all those shiny noisy toys to rearrange.
Lynn | 11:21 p.m. May 13, 2008
I just don't understand how CPS is getting away with taking newborn babies from women who have been proven to be of age. As for the remark someone made about wondering how many other children this 22 year-old mother has: this could be her third or fourth one, and she would still not have been underage with her first one. But, really, who knows. We don't have that information to be able to judge.

The point is, if CPS is waiting by the birthing beds of legal adult women, and snatching their babies soon after they are born, they are breaking the law, in so many ways. They are also inhumane and heartless. This must be devastating to those young mothers. Just ask any woman who, due to difficult circumstances in her life, has had to give up a child for adoption.
Charles | 5:46 a.m. May 14, 2008
The reason these FLDS children are doing so well, their mothers have alot of support from other women at the FLDS Ranch, it,s a good thing. Today alot of women are not getting suport and have alot of pressure and things don,t work out to well for the children, the FLDS have the answer and maybe texas will learn something from the FLDS women and men, how working people sticking together can get it done without the state. The state of texas thinks we need them, they only need to guard the border like they where hired to do, do your job texas, stop picking on women and children. Shame Shame o texas.
Charles | 6:02 a.m. May 14, 2008
You see the FLDS do not buy junk for their children to play with. They teach the children the correct way to play and have fun and also to do chores, like learning how to grow food for their family, we use to call victory gardens WW2, it,s a good thing. See texas you might learn something from the FLDS Ranch yes. The rich have nannys and FLDS have each other. The homes the men build, their wisdom and skills, now where do you think it comes from, texas. The FLDS home school their children, look at the schools around you texas are they doing so well, I don,t think so, how come? Drugs, crime etc.Fix your own neighborhoods before you raid others.
RE: FLDS propaganda | 7:30 a.m. May 14, 2008
You must remember why they are lying, namely Short Creek taught them that if they tell the truth about how they define family, daddy will be taken away for a very long time. Why do women lie about their age? So that they are not separeted from their children...it seems that the "lies" all revolve around keeping the family unit intact. As if you would not do exactly the same if you were the one everyone was pointing their fingers at.

You think there isn't CPS propaganda..."oh there is not competition in the FLDS community." Ask yourself why some have basketball hoops cemented into their driveways if that was truthful. Oh, girl X is underage (they claim 15 documents show 22) and just gave birth. Oddly enough that same "girl" has a TX drives license and has for some time. Does Texas actually pass out drivers licenses to 12 or even 11 year olds?
Since both sides seem to be equal in the ability to stick with actual facts, one out of necessity and one out of desire to condemn, let's just stick with application of law as it would be apply to all citizens.
Re Doodles | 4:42 p.m. May 17, 2008
Fromw what I have seen from people that have left this ugly religion (FLDS)the wives and the children are so busy vying for the attention of the Father that it appears to be that no strong paternal bonds are ever constructed. You never ever hear one of them talking about how much they miss their Dad. How could you possibly make a deep connection with someone that has to divvy up their time between several wives and dozens and dozens of children? The whole polygamist thing is a very dangerous sociological experiment.

"So your children would actually get to see their father maybe once or twice week. With 20 or more children, your husband would actually share some quality time with your children... almost never."

My Father has 6 (six) wives and 42 children and I see him every single day from 5:30-7:00 am. when he goes to work. He get's home at 6:00pm. and spends the evening with his family teaching the children and encouraging each one to jump in and do their part. Quality time is eating dinner together, reading stories, singing together and having family prayers -afterwhich we retire to our rooms and read the scriptures on our own and say our own prayers. There is nothing wrong with that. Big families are the way to go and I wouldn't change my childhood for the world. I AM HAPPY- are you amazed? Get a clue. FLDS are real people capable of thinking for themselves.
You are misinformed.

They kept her in custody claiming she was underage for the purpose of taking her baby away from her. As soon as she gave birth they admitted she was an adult, how many others are adults that the Texas officials are lying about for their best advantage?
Texas is sick and they have way too much power.
