Words have meaning! Despite an effor by the DN editorial staff and the host of writers that will muse over the words written, NCLB is nothing more than an absolute power grab by the federal government, mostly because of baffled citizens who don't want to grow up and take charge of their own lives, including raising their children without government 'help'. America! Wake up! The federal government, Republican and Democrat, are going to continue to tell you that they know best, so please hand over your liberty! Take a stand!

Seriously, both at the federal and state level, we just need to get legislators out of education. Go ask any teacher what is wrong with the system and they will tell you top down mandates, usually unfunded. How can our teachers possibly keep up with the yearly whims of our legislators? They can't.

Let the teach!

Evidence, worf?

Otherwise, you are blaming Clinton...

'NCLB was originally proposed by the administration of George W. Bush immediately after he took office. (sic) and the United States Senate passed it on June 14, 2001 (voting 918).[7] President Bush signed it into law on January 8, 2002.'
- Cursory wikipedia search.

For something George W. Bush proposed, and signed in 2001.

With a Republican majority in the House AND, the Senate.

Why can't the Deseret News just come right out and say it?

Bush was wrong,
and just like everything else -- Obama is trying to fix it.

To "LDS Liberal" unfortunately Obama's "Fixes" are typically worse than the problem they are trying to solve.

If they wanted to repair the damage done by NCLB, they would abolish it and admit that it was a failed program.

There is no Constitutional "education" clause; therefore, "education" is left to the States and to the People.

If we could just understand how limited Federal Authority is, we wouldn't even be having a discussion about "no child left behind". It simply is not a duty of the Federal Government.

However, education is important. It is one of the greatest responsibilities of every family. In Utah, much of our taxes support education. We expect results. We expect excellence. We expect the STATE and the community to provide that education. But, the Federal Government has no role - unless you distort the Constitution.

Google "Education and the Constitution" if you don't have time to read the Constitution in its entirety.

Pagan,

Your youth keeps you from seeing the larger picture. NCLB came after Clinton's debacle of twenty first century education or century twenty one (can't remember which). It was common knowledge to all who had children in school and is very similar to NCLB. I'd send you references, but I don't think you'll believe it anyway.

Also, it was Clinton who forced banks to give home loans to people who couldn't afford it. That's why the problems of today

It was also Clinton who sold nuclear technology to North Korea in 1994, and has since found it's way to Iran.
