It is interesting that a state so vocally opposed to federal intervention very quickly sticks out its hand for federal disaster relief any time something like this happens.
Assessing $13 per person would be a tax, no? People scream whenever there is a minor tax increase. And doesn't Utah get more in federal benefits than it pays? I'm sure the folks in Davis County like that. What do you think?
As a resident of Midvale, I would be willing to donate $10 towards the Davis County clean up. If you asked for a donation statewide, $1-$5 would suffice. Would that be a great thing for our state.
As far as agreeing with the letter writer, its not black and white. The grey area is the fact that if Davis County dosn't use is someone else will.
Because asking someone in Utah or Davis County to pay for a fee/tax hike to help pay for the disaster would be political suicide.
It's much easier to rant against the Federal Government while taking handouts than to actually change behavior.
I have to agree,
The letter writer shows integirty.
by being willing to actually put his money where his mouth is.
The fact is:
Utah Republicans - by and large - never walk the talk.
Feeding from the same Federal trough,
only different political pigs.
Why not use available funds and economizing elsewhere to make it up, neither adding to taxes, nor creating another precedent for federal intervention.
@ Gildas, trust me, the federal government really would rather not be invited in, "intervene" as you call it. They would rather that the local folks take care of it. But the locals are asking for the help. Thank goodness the federal government, acting on behalf of the entire nation, is there for people in time of need.
Whatâs the difference in using taxpayer money from the federal government and taxpayer money from local government?
The conservative thing to do is have the individual pay for their own problems and not ask their neighbors to pay for someone else's problems.
Charity might work for some, but probably not for all. Like in the case of medical charity, much is given and many are helped but too many are not helped and go bankrupt.
The difference is that if the individual pays for his own, it may destroy his total well-being.
If the local government pays, each taxpayer might see a tax increase of a few dollars.
If the federal government pays, each taxpayer might see a tax increase of a few cents.
The idea of living in a civilized society is to share the good and the bad and even out the consequences.
This guy must be one of those awful liberals we're always hearing about.
What would have happened if it was really bad in Davis Co.? Of course you know that the amount the Feds contribute on our behalf is only part of what is required. I wonder if we should require drug tests for all the reciprients.
First they bow down to K Street and Wall Street Corporate sneakiness, outright-scams and con-games, Koch Brother's and ReaganBushClintonBush-villes economics, deregulated for kickbacks for the Koch Brothers and Grover Norquist, in their "Field Of Dreams," (of corn and sugar cane), with more corruption, and "crony capitalism" game of survivor. Who can lie, outlast and outwit to the end will win. Ask yourself, why would Utah want to use $500,000 of your tax dollars to pay a professional D.C. lobbyist to stop the federal government from trimming the budget, by cutting jobs or services at Hill Air Base, I thought the GOP create jobs?. Not cut them. Then Utah whines about "Don't tax you. Don't tax me. Tax that baby on your knee." And wants more Pork and Earmark entitlements. Then Davis County government is planning on using $4.1 million in federal disaster aid relief, on what, replaceing the sand in the dessert, or making the salt flats better to race on?. The Apocolypse has arrived. If they don't get their ways, anarchy and a complete-collapse of Society happens. Crooks of a feather stick together. They should all be jail birds by now.

Double.
Standard.
I am supprised that the liberals do not underastand how disaster money works. It is a loan that is to be paid off.
How do you know how long it will take to repay? Will it really tax our children if it is paid off in 3 years instead of immediately?
Also, why don't you liberals like it? The feds loan us $4.1 million at 3% interest, so now by the time it is paid off, the feds have more money in their pockets.
For those of you who say that you would help to pay off this debt quicker, why are you not helping to pay down the national debt? You realize that there is a treasury department that is set up to accept your gift to cut the debt.

Because Conservatives make the argument for 'self reliance'...
while accepting federal goverment, handouts.
Ergo:

Where is the 'self reliance'...
in asking for $60 million dollars in federal aid?
To "Pagan" lets take a look at the fiscally "responsible" Obama.
From the Seattle Times January 12, 2010, "Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year" from there we find out that "President Barack Obama will ask Congress for an additional $33 billion to fight unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq on top of a record $708 billion for the Defense Department next year"
From CBS News, August 22, 2011, "National debt has increased $4 trillion under Obama". There we find out that "The latest posting by the Treasury Department shows the national debt has now increased $4 trillion on President Obama's watch."
From Fox News, Sept 28, 2011, "Obama Gives $737 Million to Solar Firm Linked to the Pelosi Clan" There we find out that " The Obama Administration is giving $737 million to a Tonopah Solar, a subsidiary of California-based SolarReserve. PCG is an investment partner with SolarReserve. Nancy Pelosiâs brother-in-law happens to be the number two man at PCG."
From Bloomberg, Sep 12, 2011, "Obama Team Backed $535 Million Solyndra Aid as Auditor Warned on Finances". There we find out that "Two months before Obamaâs visit, accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP warned that Solyndra, the recipient of $535 million in federal loan guarantees, had financial troubles deep enough to âraise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern.â "
From the Washington Times, March 31, 2011, "Barack Obama: Losing $84 billion big success" from this we find out that the government will lose $25 billion on the stock, $45 billion on a tax break during its bankruptcy, and another $14 billion tax break after bankruptcy.
Knowing that your beloved leader has wasted and lost so much money, why does he deserve another term?

And your claims of national debt Redshirt:
1) Did not come when George w. Bush doubled the national debt.
or
2) Does not address the issue of Republicans 'blasting' the federal goverment...
while being first in line, to ask for a Bailout.
OR you could tax the 1% at 1950's rates. Why not give that a try first?
Utah receives more from the Federal Government than it sends to the Federal Government.
Most people in Davis County opposed to federal spending were quite happy that Pres. Bush decided to invade Iraq to the tune of at least a trillion dollars.
You see, it all depends on how the fed spends.
To "Pagan" so what you are saying is that Obama deserves a second term because Bush had one.
Obama is no different than Bush except for the magnitude of his government programs.
Bush signed the treaty to pull out of Iraq. Bush got Sadam, Obama got BinLaden. Is there really much of a difference?
Bush increased the debt by $4.9 Trillion in 8 years, Obama increased it by $4 Trillion in 3, and will increase it by another Trillion before he leaves office.
If Bush's actions were so wrong, why are Obama's actions ok since they are the same and only end up costing the American people more?
Decrying taxes with your hand out. Utah gets more federal dollars than it pays in. Please, just say "thanks but no thanks".
