Wouldn't the direction given by each specialist be within the context of a given play? Unless each specialist has the ability to call their own play I'm not sure I see the issue. BTW professional footbal teams have had this system for a long time.

Sounds like Frank applied to be the OC but was turned down.

The UTE Conference is always looking for coaches.

Frank:

This is pretty common in college staffs. College staffs are huge. I have a friend on the staff and his job is "quality control." I asked him what his duties were and they ranged from breaking down film, charting plays both in practice and games and doing all other sorts of errands for the paid coaches.

Usually Frank, the offensive coordinator calls the plays. Most do so from the booth. The OC will put in the offense and then will work with his subordinates (position coaches) on how to coach the individual players within the scheme of the offense chosen. Often times the head coach (Whittingham) might want an OC that will run a particular offense. He might want to do a spread offense, a pro-style offense or whatever. Usually, the head coach will hire the OC within that philosophy. In rare circumstances (mostly with really well known coordiantors like Chow), OC's are hired and they will often somewhat dictate the offense they will run or there is some understanding. However, I think this is doubtful with Johnson who will probably coordinate an offense within Whittingham's overall philsophy.

Bottom line Frank, Whittingham knows what he's doing...
