It's interesting to me how we often glorify wartime presidents and freedom in the same sentence, when war often includes a reduction in civil liberties, along with rapid government growth. In Lincoln's day, he instituted martial law and suspended habeas corpus. During WWII we saw the forced relocation of Japanese Americans. Our "war on terror" has given us the Patriot Act, the NDAA, along with new government bureaucracies in the TSA and Homeland Security. These things do not represent an increase in freedom, but an abandoning of strict principles in the name of political expediency. I worry that we sometimes seem to equate all wars with a defense of freedom, whether they be fought in self-defense, or under the capricious ambitions of a few powerful men.

It is well to remember and honor those who risk their lives for us in time of war. Perhaps we could remember that those of us at home have an obligation to defend freedom domestically, whether in wartime or a season of peace.

I wholeheartedly agree! I'll be voting for the only candidate who has our Nation's best interests at heart: President Obama!

A quick fact-check demonstrates that Mitt Romney will say anything, no matter how egregiously false, to gain votes. Someone should tell Mitt that real Americans don't lie about our President.

Don't forget that this address, the Civil War and Lincoln all stood for one nation, undivided and indivisible. It does not mean 50 nation states, each with its own patchwork of laws and rights. States rights is antithetical to the Constitution and legacy of Lincoln.

Such unconditional nationalism, regardless of its source, and irrespective of the God called upon to justify it, is the only reason a nation can do something as shameful as the Vietnam and Iraq wars and yet still be called the "rudder of the entire world".

As if the citizens and government of no other nation have "character and principles".

America's honor and majesty lies in its character and principles, not its rifles and bombs. QUOTE

This letter starts well, with the above, much needed, statement, but then quickly seems to lose its way.

The quote from Kipling is also apposite however. Let me add some more; it's all in the public domain:

Far-called our navies melt away; on dune and headland sinks the fire. Lo, all our pomp of yesterday is one with Nineveh and Tyre!

This makes me think of the old empires which like our own far-flung outposts must finally depart, as did the over-extended military activities, no matter how noble they may have seemed then, of Rome and Britain, and no matter how noble our own entanglements may now seem.

old men start the fights, and send young men to fight the wars.
If we had mandatory military service for all young people, there would be fewer wars.
it easy to send someone elses son or daughter to war, it is harder to send your own son or daughter to war.
the poor fight the wars, and the rich profit

No honor among thieves which is all our government is. They are no better than Nazi's Republicans and Democrat globalists need to be thrown in jail.

Let's also remember the words of the immortal george carlin..."there's too many people in this country who want to tell you wnat you can and can't say!"

I wonder if Bradley Manning shares your feelings. It is opposition that provides a nation its conscience. From my point of view that is something that was lacking as we let misdirected leadership shame us into unjustified actions. This is another reason why we must oppose the trends to stifle our speech, and for others to profit from our inactions. We cannot allow the few strip us from our benefits of citizens.

Agreed!

I grew up a hard core Utah conservative.

Spending 6 years in the Military was huge wake-up call to me about how much I had been decieved!

Ignorance is bliss.
Only the gullible believe their radios and politicians.

Let me state this only once;

There is NOTHING glamrous, righteous, or worth being proud about war.
It is H-E-double toothpick on earth!

Tho it may Sometimes may be necessary, but gloating about it - or even building PRIDE and RICHES from it will destroy us as a Nation.

Oil is not one of them.

God has warned us about it this.
WE have been wrong,
WE have been the agressor,
WE have been doing Satan's bidding.
WE need to repeat!

Republican need to STOP their War Profiteering.

"In a time of election mania, we must not lose track of our proscribed course. As a nation we must continue to stand tall and firm and preserve our way of life. As a bastion of freedom, America serves as a rudder for the entire world."

PROscribed? Doesn't that mean forbidden? Or was the writer trying to point out to us the discrepancy between our words and actions?

Is it a warning against the attempts of the current House majority, the GOP party and their owners in Corporate America and the Banking Industry, to destroy the American way of life for those who cannot afford to run for office?

Hmmmm.

The President has advanced America's honor by obtaining justice for the 911 victims and making our country safe.
