Unfortunately, I think that "working across social and political
differences to solve problems" is a ship that has sailed. No matter who we
elect, a sizable minority of the country will hate him.The last president that
was given respect from both sides was George Bush Sr.
The
Republicans hated Clinton and did everything they could think of to undermine
him. The Democrats reciprocated with G.W. Bush. And the Republicans have taken
their hatred of Obama to entirely new heights. It may take a world war or a
great depression to get America to unite behind a president again.
I'm sorry, but this is just a weird op-ed piece. There are some good
sentiments, but it is effectively partisan. Let's start with a simple idea of
the Republicans accepting the will of the people. Bob Inglils, a former GOP
Congressman from SC said to Bill CLinton: "I just want you to know, when
you got elected, I hated you. And I asked to be on the Judiciary Committee in
1993, because a bunch of us had already made up our minds that no matter what
you did or didn't do, we were going to find some way to impeach you. We hated
you. You had no right to be president." And he said, "That's
wrong." And he said, "I'm sorry." The Democrats accepted the
results of the controversial 2000 election which they really won. And the GOP
announced it would do all they could to ensure the failure of President Obama.
Let's change this attitude, and take it from there. The GOP wants reverence for
their guys, but not for the other guys. That's really very un-patriotic and
un-American.
I can only imagine the horrors for our country coming from a system which
allowed presidents to choose their successors, as in many private businesses.
There is plenty of evidence that several succeeding administrations took the
country in the wrong direction.
