Thank you for this article. "Wings" is one of the great films ever made and enthralling is a good word for it. I used to show it to my freshman world history classes. They would protest at the prospect of a silent, black and white film. I'd say, "Give it half an hour. If you don't like it, we'll turn it off." When I turned it off after a half an hour, there would be howls of protests to let it run. It hooked them! "Wings" taught the reality and horrors of war, what it was like to have life up rooted when society changed and what kind of entertainments their grandparents and great-grandparents had in a time capsule. It showed the differences in society in the early 1900's vs. the media generation. Old fashioned and hooky at times, of course. But that is also part of the joy of "Wings." I just received my DVD copy and can't wait to enjoy it again.
