re:Y's little brotherI think the Y is the little brother now.
The U is in the PAC 12 and has won two BCS games. BYU hasn't even had a
single NFL draftee in two seasons now and hasn't even been close to the
BCS! The Y isn't respected nationally anymore ... not like in the days of
Young, Detmer , etc... The Y used to place all sorts of O-linemen in the NFL
along with plenty of QB's and line backers. No more. Good grief the U
slaughtered the Y at home last year by 40!! BYU football has fallen off the map
and is now one of the have-not's on the outside looking in. By the way -
the U is picked to finish 2nd in their division this year in the Pac12. The U
dropped BYU from their schedule remember - not the other way around. BYU has
become Utah State. Sad but true.
Bronco needs to tone it down a bit - honestly. Goodness sake - "the most
qualified to do it all"? BYU isn't even in the top 75 this year and
they have the worst QB to ever have a Y on his helmet. Also to suggest that the
QB position is stocked for years to come....say what? Is anyone really excited
about ANY recruit over the past 2 years? Somehow smallish running QB's
don't excite traditional BYU fans who have grown up on Jim McMahon, Steve
Young and Ty Detmer. BYU has no conference - is locked out of the BCS - was
passed over by the Pac 12 AND Big 12 who took Utah and TCU instead. BYU football
is starting to remind me of the basketball program under Roger Reid. Roger was
out there trying to gin up support for a mediocre program and it just fell flat
with fans. Things didn't turn around until Dave Rose came of board. BYU
football is simply MEDIOCRE and unexciting!! Sorry but it's true!!
And the jokes just write themselves. He said the same thing a few years ago.
Fans don't care about the GPA of players Bronco. Fans care about wins -
especially against the big teams - something that hasn't happened for a
worfAs the duck hunter would say, this is the most delusional
statement ever made by a cougar fan. "If a BCS game
comes, the cougs will get it first."Keep those coke cups off
the floor, nice try.CFITThis site will always be Utah vs
BYU, "In fairness, it looks like the Utes got one of their
better recruiting classes, but they're still ranked as the 8th best recruiting
class in the PAC12."In fairnes BYU only has 4 teams to compare
with, Notre Dame, Army, and Navy way to go you're # 2. Get over it buddy, go
over to the Utah articles and see all the Cougar comments, you for one should
know how the game is played.
Hey worf,Worry about your own team. 54-10 is plenty to keep your
I love making fun of BYU but I also like them being competitive. Until BYU joins
a BCS conference, BYU will continue to get a few really good players and the
rest are hopefuls. BYU simply won't be able to consistently compete with the
better teams on their schedule. They will win a home game each year against a
BCS opponent that is usually down. Their last signature win was against my Utes
in 2009 in overtime. Their last big, big win was against Oklahoma the first game
of that same year and it was shown that Oklahoma wasn't that great that year.
I enjoy when Utah and BYU are both good at the same time. I want to
win all our games and then crush BYU. My opinion is that BYU will simply be one
of the better of the mediocre teams until they can get into a BCS conference and
recruit better. Need speed.
Rational:"So what you are saying, is that Utah's "best
recruiting class ever" is not as good as BYU's 2010 class?"Certainly not. In fact, if you had read that entire post, you would have
noted I had ALSO said:"According to Rivals, which only ranks
the Top-50 recruiting classes, the cougars ranked #50 and #40 respectively in
2009 and 2010...back when they were recruiting in the MWC. But once they started
recruiting in the WAC in 2011 and 2012, their recruiting classes remained
unranked. And that reflects a step DOWN."Back in 2009 and 2010,
the Rivals ranked Utah's class as #44 and #32 respectively; or in other words,
higher than the cougars'. I just didn't mention that since it didn't seem
relevant to my post as it was directed toward what Bronco said about the
cougars' recruiting class; not the Utes'.And I've always maintained
that Rivals has been the more accurate recruiting service than Scout, so
whenever there's a comparison, I stick with Rivals. Short of a comparison --
such as when the cougars fail to make Rivals' Top-50, whereas Scout does -- then
I have to use what's available. In the simplest of terms Rivals > Scout.
Scout > nothing at all.
"A word of caution: tread lightly on academic smack. Especially if the
inner workings of how GPA is calculated has confused you."YES!!
Thank you for this. Also, considering Utah football has had very good APR,
admission requirements don't seem to hurt them much.
Seems like some good recruits. Congrats on the recruiting class, BYU==="Rational, you are being irrationally obtuse. I don't think he
implied what you infer, but your remark was certainly "rude and
arrogant"."---Y Grad/DadI disagree. Bronco has said
some things that can be infered by a great many people to be condescending, and
Rational pointed some of those out. Most of us don't care. I don't. It's
football and it's competition. But some Y fans insist BYU has a face to
maintain, and you seem bent on believing it impossible that Mendenhall could
have implied anything subtle to jab at those who he believes caused him grief. I
don't think he's above that. ===="According to Tom Cella of
UTEZone, Utah only requires a 2.7 GPA (D+) the lowest in the PAC12."-JDLA word of caution: tread lightly on academic smack. Especially
if the inner workings of how GPA is calculated has confused you.====="Ute fans...get over it, we're not your rival anymore. Put
into place a scheme and game plan that can beat Colorado."-PugmanYou'll have to expound on how FANS can put together a game plan to win
games they aren't playing or coaching in.
Umm, JDL, a 2.7 GPA is not a D+. A 2.7 is a B-. Not too bad for athletes.
Well we shall see ? I hope Bronco has matured in his head coach position.
Hopefully, the excitement and all the media hype will not cloud his prospective.
I find it extremely ironic that despite the Coach's Corner show and
all the inspirational books that he reads he never came across a book or story
line that did not teach him that greatness is earned, that greatness comes after
the sacrifice and effort.Like I said we shall see.
Rational, you are being irrationally obtuse. I don't think he implied what you
infer, but your remark was certainly "rude and arrogant".I'll take my chances with Bronco over you.
Every year, and I mean EVERY year, there is a rude and arrogant quote from
Bronco -- toward the fans, toward a 60 year old guy attending a press
conference, and now (another) toward a former player who isn't in the room to
defend himself.I never once heard a condescending comment from Coach
Edwards, and he would be on the line for a 60 minute post game show, even after
losses. The most important sermon isn't over the pulpit at church,
it is how we live. All the firesides in the world don't impress me, but
Bronco's quotes and his constant scapegoating do, and not in a positive way.Recruits read and hear these things, and these are going to catch up to
Bronco and the Cougars some day, if they haven't already. Isn't a former BYU
player's 4-star son going to Utah? I'm not surprised.
Naval:You missed the whole point of Coach Mendenhall's comment. Did
you even see the "do it all" part?He was talking about
much more than just on the field such as academics, kind of like Stanford, USC,
Cal, UW, Oregon, Colorado, UCLA, AR, AR St, OR St, Wash St. Did I miss one? No,
Utah is not included. According to Tom Cella of UTEZone, Utah only requires a
2.7 GPA (D+) the lowest in the PAC12. Tom is quoted as saying, KW will take
advantage of the low academic standard for recruiting until he has to make the
changes. Stanford is truly a class program with high perfromance on
the field and in the classroom, can Utah match them Time will tell.
@Naval Vet"Even the cougar-friendly Scout site shows a decrease
in standards. Scout DOES rank classes outside of the Top-50, and their site
shows Mendenhall's "MWC" recruiting classes as follows: #53 ,
#46 , #42 , #57 , #40 , and #22 ."Naval
VetSo what you are saying, is that Utah's "best recruiting
class ever" is not as good as BYU's 2010 class?"By most
national estimations the Utes just signed the best class in their history as a
football program. The class was ranked 28th nationally by rivals and 32nd by
scout.com"Deseret NewsThanks for sharing, Naval Vet
I don't get it.....look at the list of recruits- Most qualified in all areas?
Recruits- will go on a mission first- Utah- 5 byu?
I don't believe that was a swipe at Heaps. Anybody who has been watching since
he's been here knows that Bronco isn't overly fond of the whole recruiting gig
in general. He has taken swipes at "entitled" recruits long before
Heaps. As for the rest, "gnashing of teeth" comes to
mind. You guys are sad.
"Mendenhall calls 2012 class 'most qualified to do it all!" What
Bronco is saying is that BYU continues to have teams that will smash the lower
tier WAC and MWC and lose to everyone else. This team is geared up to play Army
this year in one of the lowest bowl games imaginable. If BYU can somehow squeak
out 6 wins. Their schedule is tougher and may not win 6 games as the talent may
not be there.
Naval VetGood grief, thanks for doing sooo much in depth research on
your Big Brother, really let's us know how much you love Byu and everything
about its football program. Stats, numbers, Sagarin, shoe size, blah blah blah,
you utes and your mumbo jumbo. So extrapolate for us how it was possible for the
#1 LSU Tigers to get shutout of the biggest game of the college football
season(according to BS pundits), they surely had stats up the wazzoo, were the
only undefeated team, had every top athlete playing for them according to
Rivals, Usa today, max prep, espn, etc. etc. How could a team supposedly that
loaded and good, not score a single point?!?!?!And a #110 ranked
offense, losing to a two win team, finishing 8-5. Talk about a massive step
worf:"If a BCS game comes, the cougs will get it
first."The cougars couldn't even get a BCS game back when they
were in the MWC. Now that they're not in ANY conference, their road to the BCS
just got harder. Without a Top-2 final BCS ranking, no BCS for you. Beating
WAC teams only gets one into the BCS if they finish undefeated, and are playing
in a conference. And the cougars won't do either.
Cougar Passion:"...the problems with Heaps likely could have
been prevented by not starting him right out of high school. We need to
emphasize to the highly recruited that they are wanted here, but they will not
be coddled."True, but Mendenhall and Doman were the one who
molly-coddled him. Heaps came IN with an attitude of entitlement, and neither
coach did anything to reign him in. In fact, they enabled him with comments
about how they had to constantly remind themselves that Heaps was only a
Freshman because he was supposedly "that good".And for the
record, Wynn started as a true freshman. One doesn't see any sense of
entitlement from him. That could be due to "good coaching".
"...the most qualified class to do it all...the standards are not going
down. They are going up and they are going up in all areas."Except that the numbers don't support that position. According to Rivals,
which only ranks the Top-50 recruiting classes, the cougars ranked #50 and #40
respectively in 2009 and 2010...back when they were recruiting in the MWC. But
once they started recruiting in the WAC in 2011 and 2012, their recruiting
classes remained unranked. And that reflects a step DOWN.Even the
cougar-friendly Scout site shows a decrease in standards. Scout DOES rank
classes outside of the Top-50, and their site shows Mendenhall's "MWC"
recruiting classes as follows: #53 , #46 , #42 , #57 ,
#40 , and #22 . That's an average ranking of "43". And
even by throwing out the highest and lowest ranked classes to come toward a
"mode range", it averages to "45". But once the cougars
dropped down to the WAC, their recruiting rank fell to #66 and #58 for 2011 and
2012 respectively. Again, this reflects a step DOWN.It seems to me
the cougars' "most qualified" class was the 2010 class, and that
class' headliner is now a Jayhawk. I just don't see this alleged accretion in
"standards" Mendenhall is trying to sell to his disciples. Are you
cougar fans really buying this?
No Conference Will Take Us:Great comeback. If a BCS game
comes, the cougs will get it first.
"What a refreshing thing to have someone that highly recruited come in and
be thankful to get an offer from BYU. Not entitled to get an offer from BYU, but
thankful to get an offer from BYU."Sounds like a swipe at a
certain departed quarterback. But the problems with Heaps likely could have
been prevented by not starting him right out of high school. We need to
emphasize to the highly recruited that they are wanted here, but they will not
be coddled. If they expect prima donna treatment, they will be better off
elsewhere. I would much rather lose those recruits to begin with than lose them
after they have used a scholarship and scared away other good recruits who may
believe they will never play regardless of the effort they give here.
Future of my Cougars:* will never win a conference championship. But
unofficially we won the WAC this season!* will never again play a BCS bowl
game* will be always rely on WAC scheduling to boost winsThis
team is WACked.
Sounds like both schools had a nice recruiting class. A couple
things. First, Bronco needs to drop this whole bash on Heaps. Its over, get over
it! Nobody cares anymore but apparently you.Second, in response to a
comment, Utah according to Ted Miller who personally covers the PAC 12 for ESPN
ranks Utah's class around 5-6 in the PAC12. Yeah, not great, but when you have
Stanford at 5, Oregon, USC, and UCLA all with top 20 classes, its hard to
compete. That said, Utah came in with the #28 overall recruiting class. Not
bad!We all know that it doesn't matter what the rankings are. What
matters is who develops in a giant step above high school level.Nobody knows who is going to be who in a few years down the road. But we know
that both schools have a knack with developing talent and getting the most out
of their players who seeminly have less talent.Good luck to both
Future of the Utes:* will never win a conference championship* will never again play a BCS bowl game* will be on the mid to lower
standings of the conf. This team will be Buffaloed.
Ville whatever. USC would have been ranked 25 which makes BYU 26 in both polls.
So what is your point. According to u BYU should have finished 100 and
something. Where did u finish?
Whatever Bronco.......you won't see a top 20 ranking with your current QB and
unless the Hill recruit gets some experience and is good, 2013 won't be a year
that the Cougs will be ranked in the top 20 either. BTW, the only reason you
finished #25 in the AP is USC couldn't be ranked in that poll, so 10-3 didn't
get you ranked at all, truth be told. Hope this class does work out but it will
take returning missionaries for this class to contribute right away.
Keep in mind that Bronco would rather have a quarterback that can't throw than
one that can.
Ute trolls: If you're going to quote Bronco, here's one to try on for size.
Regarding the QB situation. If we"re going err, we're going to err on the
side of having to many instead of not enough, because it's such an important
position. Instead of the Ute faithful reminding us all on how many offensive
linemen they have in the NFL, it may bode well for them to have a quality man
behind the center. Of course they'll read this and remind us all how Hayes led
them to the season of almosts. Maybe this season you can hope the whole
conference will be put on sanctions so you can make it to the conference
championship game. I love my BCS membership. Always and forever still trying to
use BYU as the measuring stick. Ute fans...get over it, we're not your rival
anymore. Put into place a scheme and game plan that can beat Colorado.
"You'll see a cluster fighting for our quarterback job after this next
season (when starter Riley Nelson graduates)."Well, the
Heaps-Riley competition was certainly a cluster.
LOL at our BYU obsessed little brothers up north. Having the 8th or 10th best
recruiting class in the PAC 12 is meaningless to the kids on the hill as long as
they thinke that the Utes had a better recruiting class than the Cougars.
Despite their "big boy conference" status, the #1 goal of our little
brothers is, and always will be, beating their big brother down south.
Wow! Ute trolls are out in force tonight. They say they've moved on, but they
continue to compare themselves to the BYU standard. I checked out the Rocky
Mountain News, and there is not a single comment from a Ute fan about the Buffs
recruiting class. I guess we know who the Utes still see as their rival. In fairness, it looks like the Utes got one of their better recruiting
classes, but they're still ranked as the 8th best recruiting class in the
PAC12.BYU will always have a hard time comparing in the recruiting
class wars because of the numerous RMs. Add in the RMs for this year, and BYU
is probably 10 - 15 places higher than were most media put them.
And then there were three. According to Kitty Kat fans several schools
were going to follow BYUs lead to independence.Well you lost one. Navy is
now part of the BE.Come on! Show us how great being independent is with
your new recruits.
Sounds familiar.......oh yeah Quest for Perfection, and we all know how that
turned out. It's same thing every year.
Number one recruits yet again. As always we beat Utah for every recruit.
"What his heart is, and the way he acts, and who he is and what he stands
for. He comes from a phenomenal family...He likes to run people over."Football is such an interesting sport.
every stinking year this is what they say. "this next year will be our
best," blah blah blah.
Hopefully, Mendenhall will do a better job of developing quarterbacks next
season. Otherwise, BYU will enter 2013 "their toughest schedule yet"
without any experience at QB.
Just like Jake Heaps was "most qualified" to win the Heisman? All hype... again.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall called his 2012 collection of recruits "the most
qualified class to do it all."To do all of what?Keep Utah's win margin within 43 points? To beat Boise State on
their own Blue turf?Win the Independence Conference?Win
the Poinsettia Bowl? Please Bronco, don't say its next years slogan
" The Band of Brothers most qualified to do it all"
