I think it would go a long way toward preserving the Ute nickname if we all actually start treating it with respect, instead of frequent, intentional misspellings of it (the guilty parties all know who they are). It's pretty rare and special that a group of people get to have their name represented by a University, and a shame when people disrespect it by either giving it a bad representation or poking fun at it.
Obviously a slow day in sports.
@stg2slc
So you have never intentionally misspelled anything with the other team. Respect goes both ways
billybubba, no I haven't, I think saying things like "Kewgs" is pretty juvenile, but it's still pretty far from disrespecting a race of people with a slanderous term.
ok i was just asking
I mentioned this in a similar story, but how about updating some names? Box Elder Bugs? How about Morgan updating their non-PC name from Trojans to Freemen (Morgan Freemen). Lehi Mills, Jordan Rivers, Timpanogas Caves, Park City Trust Funds, Hurricane Force Winds, Union Dues, Juan Diego Recruiters, Delta Faucets (corporate donations will eliminate fund raising in Delta), Carbon Footprints, Emery Boards, Granite Countertops, and let's just leave Beaver Beavers, they've endured that name this long, why mess it up now?

So...we're still stuck with Swoops then?
Rats.
Oh well. At least we aren't the "Utah Unicorns"!
GO UTES!!!
Dixie State in St.George changed their name from Rebels to Red Raiders, which is not a real common name but i know there must be at least 1or 2 other Colleges or Universities in the country that use it,It would be interesting to know.
The Utah Unicorns has a nice ring to it.
Sooner or later the PAC 12 PC crowd will decide to make the "Utes" an issue and Utah won't have any choice but to change.
On the bright side, all of the counterfeiters will have a heyday producing non-PC gear.
moderateinmagna
Like, perhaps, the Texas Tech Red Raiders?
Duplicating mascots is hardly an issue:
The SEC has two sets of duplicates:
Georgia Bulldogs
Mississippi State Bulldogs
Auburn Tigers
LSU Tigers
moderateinmagna,
DSC is not the Red Raiders, they are the Red Storm, which is the same nickname St. John's has carried since changing from the Redmen in 1994. I don't think it's the worst name, just tough to come up with a good mascot for it, and Dixie's is just awful unfortunately. It makes Swoop seem about as relevant to the Utes as Bevo does for the Longhorns.
Mustangs are in-bred, sterile horses. How is that better than Cougars? Frankly they should have named the high school Draper high, but the Canyons school board is so completely out of touch with reality they thought Draper would upset some people, just like they thought Cougars was offensive.
