As a former ostracized survivor of Junior and Senior High School, I can attest that teenagers can be callously indifferent to the pain they inflict on others as they conform to the unwritten rules of the juvenile jungle and place pursuing "popularity" above friendship, loyalty and civility. The code of the pack mentality seems to be to find someone seemingly more vulnerable than you are and torment them, or risk being singled out for torment yourself. As the article states, getting labeled as "different" than the in-crowd will put a bullseye on your back.
