I said this ten years ago and I'll say it again now. When Welch and Johnson returned from the IOC announcement ceremony that Nagano, Japan would host the nest Winter Olympics, they had to make an important decision. They would have to "play the game" or withdraw from the competition to host the Winter Olympics. Nagano was clearly an inferior venue than SLC. Unfortunately for Nagano, the events of the games held there proved that. Welch and Johnson decided to go forward and continue to pursue their long held goal. Mike Leavitt put it most succinctly when he said, "The IOC problem did not start in Salt Lake City, but it will end here!"
Welch & Johnson had too much abuse heaped upon them which they did not earn.
