Natural gas is the bridge to clean energy. Because renewables have variability (e.g., solar works during the day, winds die down and pick up), the electricity system needs flexibility to accomodate that variability, and natural gas is the ONLY fuel that can be easily ramped up and down to meet that variability. Can't do this with coal or nuclear.

As more renewables come on the system, however, that variability will decrease because they'll "back each other up" -- that is, when the winds die down in one place, they pick up somewhere else. Research shows that more renewables on the system largely reduces overall production variability. Storage is also coming online.

The problem with natural gas is two-fold: One is fracking -- extraction releases toxic chemicals into groundwater. Consequently, the industry must fix this issue. And two, it is price volatile, with natural gas prices soaring just a few years ago. Studies show that wind and solar actually help reduce natural gas prices because when they're available, utilities turn off their gas, reducing demand and prices.

In short, diversification of electricity can bring overall costs down.

More smoke an d mirrors by the Snake Oil Salesman. Selling leases and issuing drilling permits are two different things. Beware what Obama says watch what he does. Did you hear him praise his so called accomplishments. No because they are hated. He has done nothing!!

He had better do some drilling. I don't think that Air Force One runs on water.

Did we learn nothing from the BP oil disaster? What will it take to ween this country off oil dependance? Fracking for Natural Gas is a terrible process that is killing the Utah deserts, and has already destroyed areas of Canada. Electric cars seemed like a great idea until the government killed them!
We wanted a president who would steer the opposite direction of the Bush agenda, but what we got was a new face and nothing more.

@ Connor Johnson. The BP spill damage was completely over hyped. Even some "scientists" claimed the damage would take years to clean up! Bacteria "ate" the oil and now its all gone within a few months and the beaches are clean and tourist are back! Imagine that! We were told by environmentalist that the Alaska pipeline would destroy wildlife, and the Alaska tundra. It had almost no environmental effect at all, produced thousands of jobs and without it we would be paying much higher energy prices. Environmentalist live in fear like the little boy who thinks monsters are under his bed!

And how about the oil spill...

in liberty park?

'To an oil-saturated American viewing public, the spill in Red Butte Creek over the weekend may seem insignificant. Instead of millions of gallons leaking uncontrollably into the Gulf with no immediate means available to stop it, the Salt Lake City leak equaled about 33,000 gallons...' - article

Seems silly to claim the BP oil spill, the worst oil spill in the Gulf, that washed up on THREE state coast lines, Lousiana, Texas & FLORIDA as...

'over-hyped.'

Add to that the tens of thousands of loggers who lost their jobs to provide housing for owls.

Environmentalists cause more damage than than pipelines in Alaska or off shore drilling.

Sorry Conner Johnson. This truth hurts?. Now we see who is that environmentalist waco that refuse to use the Sarah Palin word's of "drill baby drill" and wants gas prices to skyrocket into outer space. We don't want automation solutions of hyperboil talk either where these GOP blames it on the "Obamic plague" and his spending to make things right, in bailouts, that the 2008 GOP messed-up in the first place. NOR the Koch Brother's and ReaganBushClintonBush-villes economics, along with GOP deregulated for kickbacks for the Koch Brothers and Grover Norquist, in their "Field Of Dreams," (of corn and sugar cane), with more corruption, and "crony capitalism."

I would like to know more.

Actually, I would like to know, anything.

While talking of Energy in key states, the commander should explain the loss of billions to Solyndra, and his vacations. After all, it's our money, and just common sense to account for what he's doing.

Pagan,

Thirty thousand logging jobs lost.

Satchell, M. U.S. News & World Report; 6/25/90, Vol. 108 Issue 25, p27, 3p, 6c.

These jobs eventually went to Canadians who work for less, and improved the profits of lumber companies.

I haven't heard any concerns of the owls since. Some of the owls environmentalists were concerned about, doesn't even exist.

With me, things are not a contest between democrats and republicans. There's corruption with both.
