Taylorsville hired a new coach as well, Rod Wells from Bear River High School. Union is looking for a new coach now too and Layton Christian hired Kitt Rawlings for their position already.
I'm hearing rumblings down here that Union hired Parowan Head Football and Baseball Coach Matt Labrum. Which means that Parowan will be looking for anew football coach as well.
Does anyone know how Coburn's record at the high school level overall is? I know he had great success at Snow- why was he let go at Snow?
It's not very good actually. He coached at Cottonwood in the 1980's and 1990's. Cottonwood struggled with enrollment, this was before Scott Cate started helping the school and program financially. I think he also coached at Ogden. So he's coached in some really challenging circumstances including North Sanpete. I think he always wanted to coach college and got a chance as an assistant and then a head coach. Coburn knows his stuff and I think with good community support and decent talent Wasatch will do well. He did well at North Sanpete, taking them to state after several years of very poor seasons.
Thanks for the info. Eagle. I wonder if he'll stay at Wasatch long term or get back to the college ranks if it presents itself-
Scott Mitchell announced his resignation as Springville's head coach this morning.
So, Wasatch really doesn't like Smalley do they? Let him go to PC when he wanted to stay but be the head coach. Admin., told him they were behind North, then when North gets in a little legal trouble, they throw him down the river. Smalley applys again, and again is told he is not wanted. Remind me of his record against his former team? It will be easy for Coburn to be labeled a success at Wasatch, all he has to do is beat PC and he's accomplished more than any recent coach. I hope it works out for Wasatch, my feeling is, since he isn't a "local" he won't be supported enough to get the program flowing.
Mr. Morgan- How was Coburn at Morgan?
Josy-, I hadn't heard that Smalley applied. It wouldn't surprise me if he did, but I hadn't heard that. Parents liked that guy alot and most of us would have liked to see him stay here, but now that the smoke has cleared, we will get behind Coburn. Being "Local" shouldn't matter as much as how he plans to run the program. I'm excited because he stated he wanted to help with the youth program, something all head coaches should do. I met the guy and listened to his philosophies, and they all seemed right on with where we, as parents, want to see the program go, so only time will tell.
I will say this though, that a small community can humble you if you aren't who you say you are. People here have a knack of separating BS, maybe that comes from years spent as farmers.
yankees27- I was unable to attend the "Meet the coach night"- what was his philosophies? I've heard numerous things on our new coach from various sources- some good, some bad.
Wasatch is lucky to get Coach Coburn. We loved him here at Snow College. He ran a class act program, and the players loved and respected him. Congratulations Coburn with your new job!!
I hadn't heard Desert Hills would be replacing Nelson. Does anyone know anything on this?
Coburn's overall high school record is 30-59 in nine seasons: 13-6 at Morgan (1988-89); 11-29 at Ogden (1994-97); 2-17 at Cottonwood (1998-99); 4-7 at North Sanpete (2011).
His playoff record is 3-5. He was 1-2 at Morgan, 2-2 at Ogden and 0-1 at North Sanpete.
He won a region title at Morgan in 1989.
StGtoSLC....
Desert Hills coach Nelson resigned his coaching position stating he needed to spend more time with his family. He did a great job building the DH program.
HSSportsFan- Just curious what got him in trouble at Snow if he ran such a great program? Thanks for the info. G. Felt- I hope his high school record is better at Wasatch than his previous stops!
Anyone know if Ammerican Leadership is getting a new football coach?
Wasp- I too had "heard" many things. I tried not to form an opinion until I had the chance to hear from the coach first. I think it's what Wasatch needs right now. As for his philosophies, for me personally, I like that he wants to get involved with building up the youth program. Many parents have wanted this for years. As you know, the wrestling program works because of the bridges that have been built between the head coach and the little wasp program. Also, he is very focused on an actual weights program that would allow the boys to get involved in powerlifting meets. And having ALL boys in the weight room now. He also is a firm believer in having the boys participate in other sports, most notably wrestling, because he knows the discipline it instills in the boys.
I also get from him that he is the type that will come in and say, ALL positions are open today. No more politics! At least that is what I hope.
Yankees27- That is exciting to hear. I hope he is as great as advertised. I'm a little concerned with his lack of success at the high school level and him being "let go" at Snow, but I guess time will tell. I wonder if he hadn't had the success he did at Snow would the administration even looked twice at his resume- Mr. Felt stated that his record is only 30-59 at the high school level.
Please note with Coach Coburn that the situations with Cottonwood and Ogden were in very difficult circumstances. This was before open enrollment and Cottonwood throughout its history had really struggled in football being a landlocked boundary and the smallest 4A school at that time. Of course, Ogden is Ogden, not too many winning seasons there. HIs 4-7 record at North Sanpete is actually pretty good considering where North Sanpete football was. Their program fell apart after Wooten left for Mountain Crest, I think they even had a winless season (or two). So he got them to the playoffs which I think was pretty good, especially with SF coming into the league as a very tough team to beat.
I know people may not care about coordinators but, coach Wilson at Herriman has revamped his coaching staff on the defensive side. He is bringing in Ron Halbert which will bring a lot more stability to the defense at Herriman. Herriman is looking to be pretty good with the returning starters from last year on both sides, this addition will just add to that. Go Mustangs !!
