"Kinneberg said. "Our ultimate goal now is to go to Omaha."

Can't wait to hear the utah "fans" telling us how delusional he is....oh wait...who am I kidding. That won't be happening.

LOL!

Exciting!

There just isn't a better league in college baseball! And next year so many games will be seen on the PAC-12 network. Let's play ball!

Go Utes!

Once again living in the reflected light of others.

The Utes have never even sniffed a college baseball World Series, but now that Utah is "in the PAC 12," the delusional kids on the hill believe that Utah has magically become a baseball powerhouse.

Get real.

If the PAC 12 gets 8 teams in the tournament again, none of them will be Utah.

"Kinneberg said. "Our ultimate goal now is to go to Omaha."

There is absolutley no question that Vance would say the same thing. What kind of goal are you suppose to have at the first of the season. You have no idea what they have done up there as far as baseball goes. After last summer where Kinneberg was the head coach for the USA Colligate Team and with the new PAC-12 deal he has brought in some pretty good players especially pitching. Going to the regional two years ago at Cal State Fullerton, plus having a first team All-American last year has also helped in the recruiting. But the best thing by far is the league, who's who of baseball came out of the PAC-8, PAC-10. Utah is far from having that type of representation but it's going to be a fun first year. The U is going to have a chance now against Oregon State and Stanford as far as getting the states best high school players, they have already picked up 3 that were looking at other PAC-12 schools.

Utah will be one of the 8

@mlh

But of course that isn't my point. Now you are obviously much more optimistic than anything in utah's baseball history would warrant but I personally don't have any problem at all with that being their goal. As usual I am mocking the hypocritical utah "fans" on here.

When Bronco Mendenhall, and some of BYU's players, said that as an independent their goal now is to win a National Championship because that is the only championship they have to aim for, utah "fans" mocked them and called them "delusional", "irrational", "unrealistic", etc.

Well this pronouncement from kinneberg is exactly the same thing, and if you think about it even more delusional since utah has never in history made it to Omaha whereas BYU actually has won the Football National Championship.

But as I said I have no problem with coaches, players, teams, institutions, or even fans, setting high goals for their programs. But I am absolutely going to call those utah "fans" out on their constant hypocrisy.

Do you want to bet that not one single one of those same utah "fans" will get on here and criticize kinneberg? If anything they'll make tortured illogical defense of his statements.

LOL!

Try to keep up. Duckhunter's point was pretty clear. The self righteous hypocrisy on the hill is unbelievable sometimes.

I am worried for Utah...your goal while in the MWC was to win the conference tourney and be happy with getting to a regional? Now you are in the Pac 10.2...your goal has changed to College World Series?????

Call me old school, but Utah baseball should have been trying to reach the CWS all along, not now that they are in the Pac 10.2!!!!!

Go Trojans!

Duckhunter

@Old Ball Coach

And those Trojans are one of the reasons that goal is probably never going to be realized. The other reasons are asu, ucla, osu, uo, ua, stanford, uw, wsu, cal........

@Trevvor

Sorry I'm so slow dude, first person to comment on Utah Baseball "Duckhunter". I know that wasn't the point he was trying to make but dang, Why would he read or even comment on an article about Utah Baseball.

The hypocrisy goes both ways.

"delusional", "irrational", "unrealistic", etc.

brigham young "fans" are the exact same way.

Being in the PAC-12 is so much more of an advantage to get to Omaha than being in the old WAC or MWC or even the WCC. If Oregon State can do it (2 years in a row NCAA Champs), Utah can also bring the baseball to that same level.

What did Kinneberg suddenly turn into Bronco?

Why not take a page from Coach Whit's book and focus on the next game? I know Utah baseball has been on the upswing in recent years, but to say Omaha is the goal seems a bit premature. Competing in the Pac12 in baseball will be a tough enough task in and of itself.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if the Utes go to Omaha - in fact, if they did I'd be the first one to buy my tickets. It just seems odd to think in those terms with the program where it is right now.

Bill is finally in a place where he can get players that will be at the level to compete with the schools that are going to the CWS. Of course it is a tad premature but that is and should be the goal now that they are in the PAC-12. Getting in the CWS is one thing and winning it is another. The program is not that far off, there are some very good players up there now, the one thing that will take some time is the pitching and that's not that far off either.

Wouldn't it be fun for us all to get on a plane to watch our Utes in Omaha, it's going to happen sooner than you think.

I don't criticize Kinneberg. What else is he supposed to say? It is coachspeak. All the coaches say it and they have to. Every team team's 1st goal is national championship, next make it to playoff, next win conference, etc. All the coaches do the same thing.

Will they actually make it to Omaha? Unlikely. Utah did not dominate baseball in the MWC, that was TCU's job. Is one year of recruits after losing Cron & pitching going to be enough to get out of PAC12 to the regionals? I doubt it. Good enough to get out of regionals to super regionals? Very unlikely. Good enough to get out of super regionals to Omaha? It would take a miracle.

I find it hard to believe the high level recruits are going to pass on attending the traditional baseball powers to go play at Utah because they are in the PAC12 now. Especially since they are located in a cold climate where outdoor practice leading into the spring season is basically unavailable.

Duckhunter, see UU32's post, and stop being so quick to judge. Especially when judging an entire fan base. That, my friend, is delusional, to think that every single person from a fan base is hypocritical and all that. That's actually a logical fallacy, as anybody who has basic knowledge in debate or philosophy would tell you. Same for Trevvor. Seriously, it goes both ways, you're just attacking a fan base based on a small sample size.

Anyways, I do believe that the Utes will benefit from their new conference, but I don't think it'll be quite so immediate. But I think we will be seeing success up on the hill more consistently than when we were in the Mountain West! Hopefully this is true! Go Utes!

My question to all the Y fans who are commenting is this... What would you want your coach to say? Would you feel better if he had a press conf. and stated that, oh crap, the Pac12 is a great league, we're in trouble now! we'll never be competitive again! Or would you like to hear your coach say that because some doors have opened up and they are able to get better recruits, that they will now be more competitive than ever. He didn't say they were going to win the CWS, just that they now have a better chance of getting there, ergo, that is the new goal.

And Ducky, what is a "fan"? I'm just a fan. Should I aspire to get the quotes? Does that make me a super fan?

And to all those who speak of self-righteous hypocrisy, it goes both ways, both sides have dorks who speak before they think. you have your duckhunters, and we have our Chris B's. among others. you know who you are.

"Our ultimate goal now is to go to Omaha."

Well, well, well. What do we have here, a lofty NC goal? What kind of arrogance is this?

But I thought the Ute mantra was just to play one game at a time and never declare a NC championship as their goal.

My, my, how things have changed.

sammyg
Springville, UT

Outlaw...

Please go back and read the Ute commentary when Jake and Bronco were talking preseason about playing for an NC as a goal. Mind you now, BYU didn't have a conference championship to play for as an independent.

Time to take your lumps.

Where can I buy an "Omaha or Bust" tee-shirt?

UU32

Rarely do I ever agree with Duckhunter - however you have to see some truth in his words in this case. When the BYU football team (especially Jake Heaps and Bronco Mendenhall) came out and said their goal for the 2011 season was a national championhip, there was a flood of posts, comments, articles, blogs, etc. claiming how delusional they were to claim that as a goal. Now, our baseball coach says the team goal is Omaha. I don't think Duckhunter is saying that it is ridiculous to have high goals. He is just pointing out that to not call out Kinneberg for his lofty goals, while calling out Heaps and Mendenhall is a bit hypocritical.

Duckhunter

@UU32

You are absolutely correct on all counts. I greatly admire coaches that have high expectations and high goals for their teams regardless of the school or organization. And for the record I think kinneberg is a really good coach.

But as you have correctly deduced I have very little tolerance of hypocrites and enjoy busting on them immensely. I understand that by doing so I irritate a lot of Utah fans that are not hypocrites, so I would just ask them to realize if they aren't the type of "fan" I am describing or mocking then don't take it personally.

I actually never take anything any of the utah "fans", like naval lint or wedgie, say perosnally. Never. I just throw it back at them.

But on the subject of baseball it is going to be tough going for Utah in the PAC12, which is the best baseball conference in the nation. The combination of cold weather and the smallest conference budget, plus a lack of many good instate players, is going to make it hard to compete. I think kinneberg will do the best he can but making it to Omaha is not likely anytime soon.

They're really drinking the red koolaid on the hill if they think that simply joining the PAC 12 is going to make the Utes a baseball powerhouse. Powerhouse baseball teams don't play where it constantly snows and rains February through April.

MLH

Duckhunter

I also have to agree with you, it is going to be very hard for them to make it anytime soon. The baseball team at the U is fully funded, NCAA rules state that in baseball each school can have 11.7 scholarships (I think that is what it is for baseball), the only other school in the state that is fully funded is BYU. How they split those up is quite a minor miricle to make everyone happy. With that said Kiineberg has got to get some key players (pitching), but I truly beleive that the good position players in-state can produce a good team one that can compete in the PAC-12.

If things work out for the Y with how they are talking Big-12 Coach Kinneberg and Coach Law will both have to do some big time recruiting. The college baseball in this state would be unbeatable. Utah will have to compete with all the Cal schools, the Y would have to compete against all those Texas schools. This is why you guys need to be in a big time league, (all your other sports) are taking a hit, all for football.
