I love the fact that Rose is pleased, but not satisfied with his team's performance, even in a blowout. Amen.
I really don't think they'll take 3 teams from this conference. BYU will HAVE to win the regular season outright, or win the conference tourney. The worst scenario for BYU would be for St Mary to win the season and the tourney. Because of their proven track record, Gonzaga would get picked before BYU with an at large bid .
I think the Cougars will be in and the WCC will send 3 teams to the big dance. With a bracket that pulls 65 teams, it is not that hard to be one of the best 65 in the nation. And with politicking, ability to sell tickets to away games, historical invites, the Cougars will be in as the WCC sends 3 teams.
With all the changes in conference realignment last year and the year before, conferences like the old MWC is likely to get only 2 teams, not 4 as they have in past years.
Go Cougars.
@ AK Cougar. I think you may be right because while the win/loss record will be paramount in the tournament selection, the best teams do not always get selected because in the toughest conferences, the teams beat each other up more than in other conferences. The WCC champion, whoever that will be, will be seeded higher than many other conference champs on reputation alone! Gonzaga last year is a prime example. I live close to Spokane where Gonzaga will host the Cougars and it is sold out, and has been since last fall. Thank goodness for BYUtv!
The only way the Cougs miss out on the big dance is losing both games to St Marys and Zags and the game at Va Tech. This scenario would require winning the WCC tournament to get an invite.
If the Cougs split with St Marys and Zags, and beat Va Tech on the road, and win the remainder of their games; they are likely a 7 - 10 seed.
Interesting format for WCC tourney with top 2 seeds receiving double byes, and automitic entry into the semi's.
