The Holy Spirit sometimes called the comforter(parakletos,Greek) means a calling to ones side, corresponds to the name Menahem given by the Hebrews to the Messiah.
The Bible makes no distinction between the Holy Spirit and the gift of the Holy Spirit as JS did.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. ( Acts 10:44-45 NIV)

The Spirit fell upon them before any ordinances had been applied(including baptism) they received the remission of their sins in Mosiah 4:3, And it came to pass that after they had spoken these words the Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and they were filled with joy ,having receive a remission of their sins, and having peace of conscience, because of the exceeding faith which they had in Jesus Christ.

This discussion makes me think of 1 Corinthians 2:14

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

For all of you who think it is "foolishness" to feel the Holy Ghost, I would venture that you have not ever felt that kind of feeling. Like Nephi who says his brothers were past feeling.
The feelings of the Holy Ghost;
It is feeling peaceful - but so profound and deep that you can't describe it.
It is feeling love - so kind and gentle that you care about even the least of God's creatures
It is feeling vision - you are literally able to see and understand what is ahead for you in your life and what choices are best for you and which ones you should step aside from.
It is feeling purity - you feel clean inside and confident before the Lord.

It is simple to say it makes you feel peaceful. But it is more than that. It is a feeling not of this world. But of the next. It is like trying to describe to someone how salt tastes (who has never tasted it) and having them say, "Oh yeah, I've tasted that! Pepper!"

@deep in thought ,But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The Spiritual Gifts in 1 Corinthians 12,to another discerning of spirits. Discernment (diakrisis,Gk.1235)Distinguishing the power by which a teacher or prophets speaks. Exposure of false prophets like JS. (1 John 4:1).

Example(Mormonism): For if someone comes to you and preaches a(exalted man) Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit( of bondage) from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel (of works) from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. (2 Cor 11:4 NIV)
