The evangelicals' christian tolerance is amazing.
Why do so many of them and much of the press insist on a "non-Romney?"
In all my years of observing elections, I have never heard of a "non-someone." Never.
We have a man eminently qualified and scandal free, and the cry is "anyone but him."
We hope he is nominated and elected in spite of the naysayers.
Mick
It's a sad day when there are those that would impose a religious litmus test to run for politcal office in America. I really believe that many who say they oppose Mitt and yet try to explain it in "political" terms are really hiding behind this same religious bias because many of their stated reasons seem to make little rational sense. Oppose him on policy or position, but because of his religious preference never.
No matter what they call it, this is anti Mormon religious bigotry and nothing else.
On the cover of the current Time magazine it has a picture of Mitt Romney and the words "Why don't they like me?"
I feel that I know the answer and I think most of you know the answer in your heart also.
Perhaps our loyalty to the Republican party is misplaced?
Over the years we have consistently supported the right wing of the Republican party. Even in the previous election cycle we returned Bush/Cheney back to the White House with the highest percentage approval rating in the nation per capata. We had a reputation of being counted on to vote the party line.
When two of our own try for the presidential nomination of this same party
the true feelings of our Evangelical brothern surface.
The "Anybody but Romney' camp will come together to try to derail his candidacy for one reason only and we know that reason don't we?
Maybe we ought to consider a boycott of the Republican Party?
When they kick sand in our face we ought not to just smile and continue to vote the party line!
And if that one candidate wins the nomination, they will have just ensured President Obama's victory in November.
Do not be fooled here. The extreme Evangelical position is very clear. They would rather have Obama win a second term than be put into a position where they have to support a Mormon, any Mormon. For them it is a matter of southern pride as well as principle. No Mormon is fit for national office.
This is America and they are free to exercise their principles, but lets be transparent. This has little to do with abortion or gay marriage and more to do with religious bigotry. JFK's religion speech should have put this issue to bed completely, instead in the hard-core South the sign says "Approved Christians Only."
Isn't America great? Personally, none of the candidates even comes close to the Reagan model, but defeating Obama and the Democrats is paramount.
Spin it any way they like, this is about Romney's mormonism. If it weren't they'd work on accentuating Romney's commitment to conservative ideals, as he's the most promising candidate out there... Right now they're burning their idealogical bridges out of fear of their self-created cultic boogeyman--that's now come back to bite them in the behind... Reminds me of that scripture inspired adage, "You reap what you sow."
Isn't religious bigotry a wonderful thing to behold and watch. Is there still a question why Mr. Romney can not raise his polling numbers?
Prejudice runs deep in the south and when one prejudice slowly dies out another one surfaces.
I live in Texas and what concerns me very much is that many people here still have the Mormons confused with polygamous groups, such as those run by Jeffs from Texas (those from whom Texas took away their children). These people call themselves mormons but are opposite of who we are. They have nothing to do with the Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of ladder-day Saints) Church and we live in horror to think that anyone would think we are connected in any way, shape or form, or that we are similar to them at all because we are not!!! As President Hinckley announced in general conference years ago, "There is no such thing as a Fundamentalist Mormon."
There is only one kind of Mormon and most of the evangelists don't know what that is either. They have it mixed up with so many other things. Even their "Mormon Experts" have it wrong. People are not getting the truth about Mormons. They can't find truth when their motive is to undermine it. They all have no idea what wonderful things they miss.
Once again the Evangelicals are bent on destroying the Republican Party and their only hope of winning.
I agree DC, Romney is the best candidate to back.
I agree with most of the posters so far. Romney is coming out to be the best suited for office and the most level headed one of the bunch. I also agree that Evangelical Protestants tend to be bigoted and simply oppose Romney because of his religion, nothing more. I always laugh at those who complain about LDS influence in Utah. If they would move to the Bible belt where the Evangelical Protestant churches are the government, they'd quit complaining about Utah.
Everyone here is feeling bad for Mitt and also for the fact that this is "Mormon Bigotry", as noted in some comments.
Do you really think that Romney is the only one out of consideration here? How about Ron Paul?
Ron Paul has as much chance gaining this endorsement as Romney does.
However true; Romney deserves every consideration that the other candidates do for this endorsement.
Can you imagine what would happen if the LDS church leaders got together to support a single candidate?
They are forming their own political religion to run the government. They don't care about someone beating Obama as he will beat evangelicals into the ground. You have to have people with their heart and soul fighting for the Constitution. Without the Constitution we will have anarchy as most other countries have in the world, if they have government at all. The Constitution promises by blood, sweat and tears that we will have a nation with a government with processes and procedures to follow, in states and nationally. Our ancestors and others came to this country for a purpose and it was to have freedoms that other countries don't have. Religion can divide countries. I have lived in some of those countries and it is not necessarily fun. Some have fought for centuries as each believes their religion is the right one to be in control. We know that government does provide safety and protection for our society. Our Constitution with GOOD people electing officials that use that protected document and system will give our country longevity. We don't need to break into splinters as we will not be United. In some countries I lived people die during elections routinely
the Evangelicals are just getting together to re-elect BO
How choice. Any chance the coalition will rally behind Huntsman? None. Same problem. But back to Romney.
You have a candidate, well two, that they think represent the faith they know has pro-family leadership, a faith that almost single-handedly defeated Proposition 8, a faith that boasts the strongest families in the western world, and still they have to unite to defeat him for the supposed cause of home and family. By their actions they lead the charge to tear our beloved constitution into threads and still want to defeat him.
Reminiscent of placing guards at the tomb, isn't it?
May I suggest that those here cultishly supporting Ron Paul should do as I and many others have done and research all the can about the man.
A simple visit to Google will avail a plethora of information about Ron Paul and his historical roots. I've spent a great deal of time reading material from his websites and from oppositional sites as well. My feeling after weighing the good and the negative is that he is as much a chameleon as any politician.
Don't just drink the kool-aid people. Research the people you claim to support and the people who support them. Follow the money. Read both sides. The answers may surprise you.
As for the so called "evangelical" christians. I am not overly surprised by their narrow mindedness. They realized last go round the backlash from Huckabee. There just cloaking their neverending religious limus test in spun terms. Their hypocracy is glaring like an emporer with no clothes, albeit with a smiling face and gentle handshake.
If they succeed and Obama is re-elected, as he will be, they will cry and moan that their man was robbed. perhaps the most salient point in favor of Romney...
Religious bigotry at it's worst!
As a pro-Obama person, I have no dog in this hunt, but it is amusing to watch the rightwing Bible bashers who own the GOP squirm around their anti-Mormonism. To my fellow LDS who play puppy to the party that kicks and beats them, maybe you should open your eyes.
