Worry about your Cougies Brad.

The Utes represent the state best, it's why Utah is named Utah.
Go write an article about the WCC or something.

Rock I can't disagree more. I love the tradition, the respect and the circle and feather!

How about another article encouraging that team down south to change their logo from the one they stole from Yale? It is an insult to Ivy League Americans.

Maybe the State of Utah should change it's name also Brad. The logic is the same.

Smack dab right on!!! Not what Ute fans want to hear but so true.

it is a proud and honerable name as the tribe and the state. it is silly to talk about it. it does not do any bad at all.

Using this silly logic, maybe the Ute Tribe should change their name because "outsiders think "Utes" it's a play on words" and "few people outside the state even know what a Ute is anyway."

This PC nonsense is simply too much.

I am a cougar thru and thru and I would like to see the Utes keep what they have. If the tribe is OK with it, then why should anyone else have a problem?

Drop the name "because the Ute tribe isn't easily recognized"?
So Brad Rock would like to see the Ute tribe drop further into obscurity?

I never heard of the Ute tribe until moving here. Many around the nation weren't aware of them until the Utah football team got Alabama to quit. If they keep the name, Utah should do more to promote the tribe. Game day programs should feature Ute history or tribe members attending the university. Those commercials that play during TV timeouts describing the univiersity? Throw in a blurb about the Ute tribe.

Brad, you are an so far off on this one it's not even funny. Those companies that you refer to don't just change their name for fun. They change their names because they get acquired and/or merged with other entities. Or sometimes in the case of Ma Bell, busted up into smaller pieces by the feds. You are comparing apples to oranges here. And I'm with Utahute72 on this one. If the name of the team should be changed, then shouldn't the name of the state go with it? According to your logic, I think that it does. Ridiculous.

Rock, this is so ridiculous that I have a hard time believing that you actually believe what you wrote. There is tradition. The U of U were the Utes and using the drum and feather when they made their run in basketball under Rick Majerus. Same goes with being the original BCS busters, and then doing it again.

What people really need to understand, especially the ones that think they should decide how other people should feel, is that if you really want to offend the Ute tribe, stop calling the University of Utah, "the Utes."

If we want to talk about stolen identities Mr. Rock tell the cougs to go back to the nasty Royal Blue color and leave the Aggie blue alone.

How about this:

How cool would that be??

If the Ute Indian Tribe isn't offended by it than why should "Politically Correct" do-gooders such as Brad Rock be offended?

As part Indian myself, I find such outside interference from outsiders intrusive and more objectionable than the University of Utah using the Ute Tribe's name.

If you want to change something bring back the proud Ute Warrior and get rid of the "Bird." The only stipulation I would put on using the Warrior would be it must be a real Ute Indian.

Until the Ute tribe decides it no longer wants to allow the University of Utah to use its name, then everyone else should just butt out.

The UofU has already stipulated that if that day ever comes, they will acquiesce and stop using the name. So why should outsiders (even Indians of other tribes) become "apoplectic" over the issue?

It's none of their business.

We should continue to be Utah and the Utes as long as our beloved Ute tribe believes the State of Utah and the University of Utah are honoring them appropriately.

Changing the Ute name for the sake of breaking tradition? Holy smokes what a politically correct crock of the worst kind! When will sensativity demands finally cease? Today wearing red tomorrow paying reparation$! The next thing to surface will be PETA demanding that all mascots named for wildlife be dropped and BYU will have to give up the Cougar...and the cycle of nonesense continues!

This is what drives people to listen to Rush Limbaugh! STOP PLEASE!

Could not DISAGREE more. This nickname actually represents the culture of the state. If Utes is not a appropriate nickname, then we need to change the name of the State. Do some Utah History. Also will somebody please help me understand why this is such an issue. I would think if a University wanted to have their Mascot represent a group of people like this is would be an honor. The only people who dishonor this name are those who you alternative spelling when speaking of them. All of those out there who spell UTE any other way are the ones with no Respect. One wish I would have is to actually have a member of the Ute Indian Nation be the actual Mascot at games, not dressed in a Halloween type costume but actually wear clothing the Ute Tribe Council would approve of. Thank you Ute Indian Nation for allowing us to honor you in this way. Go UTES!

I think what Mr. Rock is afraid that within a year or two more people around this country and the world for that matter are going to know more about the "Utes" and their association with the Ute Tribe they the do about "Cougars" and whom ever they associate with.

Yea, worst article ever!

What is a Ute? Most people across the US have no idea. There are teams such as Standford that changed their names from Indians to Cardinal and Utah should have done the same thing along time ago. St Johns changed from the Red Men to the Red Storm. I love Utah's colors and logo and just think the name "Ute" is really dumb.

The University should be named after some of our native wildlife here in Utah.

I think a fish would be appropriate.

Maybe the June sucker?
