Welcome to coach Murphy. I hope he is able to bring back some excitement to Hunter High football. It is time to bring home another state championship to the west-side.These boys deserve to have a coach who will believe in them and stick around and develop a program. Look for the Wolverines to be physically dominating once again.

Why do you say that?

I'm glad Hunter was able to land such a quality coach, the way head coaches are treated at high schools it's a wonder anyone would want to do it.
I think his offensive scheme will be very successful at Hunter and they'll be able to pick it up quickly. It's somewhat easier to run than the spread and with their size it should be a success.

Good luck to Coach Murphy and Hunter but the "Avant Guard" offense has been run in Morgan UT for years. I understand he ran it well but I love it when everyone thinks a coach is bringing a "new exciting offense" that has been ran for years. By the way Morgan runs is well. I do believe he will be successful at Hunter with that offense because they are a traditional run oriented school.

Congrats to Coach Murphy and the best of luck, I honestly think that you are a great fit for Hunter! However, I honestly had to laugh at Saints comment. Yes, Morgan coaches have been to every Tim Murphy speech ever and tried to use his offense, even border line false idol worshipping. Morgan runs it well and have good games against lesser competition, but always struggle against top teams. The part I had to laugh at, was the combination of the word exciting and the word offense when you are talking about Morgan. It's like watching paint dry! The offense dates back to the 40's and you see a lot of little league programs using it in present day... that is were the offense should stay, at least in Morgan.

Mr. Morgan, if you mean that watching a running attack that is one of the top in the state then yes, it is boring. I hate watching a team physically dominate the opposing side. I guess learning how to step in the bucket is useful too. This offense will be great at Hunter, and hopefully Mr. Murphy will be able to stay there for many years and not have to change schools every year like other coaches have. I am sure he will have his stuff together and organize a great program.

at Utah Saints: Tim Murphy and his offense not only has been successful in California, but nationally. He has produced a video series on this offense. The offense is not exciting. but Murphy has won a lot of games as well as championships with it. Sounds like you are defending "little old Utah" versus a "California coach".

I would love to see Mr. Morgan call Coach Murphy's offense "little league" to his face. Go Wolverines!!!

Mr. Morgan honestly needs to be obsessed with finding a honestly new honestly home after his honestly latest firing. Coaching voice only takes you so far, you have to actually back it up with some knowledge other than bucket stepping . . . period. Also Coach Murphy will be a force to be reckoned with using the 1940's style "Double Wing." It is an effective offense. For being little league, it has been pretty good over the past few years. I am a Coach Murphy/Double Wing fan because it allows smaller teams the chance to compete with much bigger schools. I hate to see him get the horses together at Hunter along with his offensive schemes. 5-A better brace yourselves!

Huge get for Hunter High School! Coach Murphy runs agruably the best DW in the country. If he can keep the Hunter High kids from transfering to other schools they will be deadly with the DW. Everyone saw what they did with the I-formation 5-6 years ago. The DW will make them lethal with the style of kids they have. Congrats to Coach Murphy and to the Hunter High football team! You have yourselves a top notch coach and will be a force in 5A. I wonder how many coaches in Hunters region are going to go out and buy the materials on Coach Murphys site just to get a jump on what they will see this fall. 8-)

Not convinced the Double wing will win in 5a....I believe the defenses are too fast in 5a to make it work, especially if Hunter falls behind more than 14 points in any game. We have already seen Davis and West Jordan scrap the double wing, and Riverton struggle to get past the 1st round with "Miller's" double wing offense. It will be Interesting to see "the best coach of the double wing" and see his version...

The key is trying to keep Hunters kids from getting in the White van, and heading over to Bingham!!!

I hope Coach Murphy proves me wrong, and I wish him luck!!

I think this is a great hire for the West Side. How often do you see a coach leave California to coach in Utah. I believe Murphy will bring back the tradition Hunter once had and clean up the mess Hamilton made trying to go to the spread. Hunter has always run the ball, the double wing is just another run oriented offense. They've had success running it in the past and they have the talent to do it again.

And there is no white van taking people from Hunter to Bingham. If people would understand what is involved for a student to pick what high school they go to.

fyi old ball coach, Riverton doesn't run the double wing, they run the wing t which is different than what Coach Murphy runs.
I think regardless of the scheme you run it's about the players and their ability as athletes. Of course the coach has a ton to do with ulitimate success but if Hunter has the horses they will be a force under this coach with this scheme. Sometimes it isn't the scheme that doesn't work, it's the coach calling the plays, there are plenty of examples of teams with great talent losing in the first round of the playoffs even though they may have had the best athletes in the state.

West Jordan did run versions of the double wing for years, and did have success, Semi-finals in 2005. They changed their offense to go with the talent they had coming through the program. Hunter made a good hire here. They are known for running the ball and are bringing in a Coach that will keep with that style of play. Although any team with talent should be able to compete no matter what scheme the team is running, IMHO. They could have been successful under Coach Hamilton if the players and parents would have bought into what he was trying to do. I commend him for going in there without having had a lot of time to prep and taking his team to the playoffs. Any other coach wouldn't have been able to do that, even with the easy region schedule. Hopefully this new coach will get some buy in from the players and parents. The potential for success is there.

at plyxply: "losing in the first round even though they may have ahd the best athletes in the state"

Syracuse 16 Alta 10....no way Alta should have lost. That one was on the coaches.

Alta loss on the coaches? How about being down to your third string QB and your all state RB being in and out with injury (and not really healthy enough to do much). They were facing a great defense and were way less than full strength. I am sure it has nothing to do with that stuff! Sheesh, I would like to see how many teams would have won in those circumstances.
I am not an Alta fan, I just can't stand the uninformed comment.

Magic Happens 801

at hsfbfan#1: Alta has a ton of talent. So what you are telling me is the 200 players that they have in the program are not really all that talented. A lot of teams in this years playoffs had to deal with injuries and won. By the way, I was at the game and am aware of the roster and the losses.
Syracuse was prepared for this game and made Alta throw the ball. When they did, they took away the TE, especailly on the last play when the QB got sacked. The OL gave up too many sacks. Maybe better pass protection as ell as developing a 2nd back would have helped. So much for being uninformed...
