Couldn't agree more until I got to the last sentence. To that I say: GO OBAMA! Great Man! Great values! Great President!!!

This is truly hysterical! I would say the U.S. could not survive having the Republicans back in charge after what they did to the country under Bush. Are you kidding me? Your boys left the biggest mess since the Great Depression and now fight every effort to clean it up, and you think we should have more? All I can say is keep up the clown show, GOP, and let's re-elect the only guy who doesn't want a repeat of what Republicans did to us, President Obama.

I do not understand today's GOP.

In order to satisfy the GOP base, You force your candidates to take positions that are

- Extreme
- Flat or regressive Lower tax for rich an higher for poor
- Debt ceiling debate about paying for bills ALREADY incurred
- Completely disband the EPA rather than fix it

- un-reasonable
- 10 to 1 spending cuts to tax increase is not enough
- Climate change deniers
- un-compromising
- pledge NEVER to raise any taxes. NEVER
- Give me EVERYTHING I want or I will vote NO
- Petty and childish
- Obama is Muslim, not a citizen, wants America to fail.
- candidates must attach character rather than policies

How do you expect them to compete in a general election that will be decided by moderate, reasonable people?

And those who don't fit everything above (Huntsman?) fall completely off the Radar.

The GOP would rather lose with an extreme candidate than win.

Really DN, you publish a letter that fears the United States "won't survive" if Obama is in the white house 4 more years. The disagreements are many and substantial..but won't survive..and you want your editorial page to be taken seriously?

Re: "GO OBAMA! Great Man! Great values! Great President!!!"

Assuming, that is, your values include wanting to see America become a culturally riven, morally bankrupt, economically irresponsible Euro-style socialist wreck, along the lines of a Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, or France.

Then, yeah -- Obama's your man for president.

Four more years of Obama will be far, far better than four years with any of those running on the Republican side.

@ procuradorfiscal, feel free to criticize other systems, but don't be selective in the use of facts to get to your end point. France (and Germany) are leading the way to reform in Europe, and they have strong social programs that are NOT being jettisoned. The problem is not what you refer to as "socialism", but is due to other issues, including these South European nations being ripped off by the Wall Street types.

Huntsman is the only candidate from that side who would make a decent president. I'm glad the repubs are self destructing. Their policies only represent a small fraction of Americans yet that small fraction make so much policy.
If repubs aren't smart enough to nominate an electable candidate, Obama will win big.

The letter writer and several of the posters seem to wistfully want to be able to just cast a "no" vote for President. Sadly, that is not a choice available. You must vote for one candidate or the others (go Doc Paul and Rocky) or just not vote. You must choose. So Newt or Mitt...choose. Newt/Mitt or Barak...choose. I suspect that no matter who the candidates are, the Republicans will vote for the Republican and the Democrats will vote for the Democrat (even if they grind their teeth as they do so).

It is a tough world out there and with the cameras running 24/7 we don't get the sterilized, prepackaged candidates like we used to. Welcome to the world.

Wow! You really believe that Obama is a great man who has great values? He is someone who doesn't even know how the economy works. He cannot even be accountable for his years in office and continues blaming everyone else for his failures. He and his democratic controlled congress never once even passed a budget, so they could continue blaming the republicans for all of the problems. I would at least have more respect for him if he would at least walk into the room and sit down at the negotiation table. But, he is too busy doing other things...like playing golf, patting himself on the back for "capturing terrorists", or campaigning.

What has President Obama truly done for this country that has had a positive effect? I agree with the author that the GOP is destroying its chances to elect someone who can fix the problems inherent in Washington, but relecting Obama is definitely not the solution to anyones problem. He was woefully illprepared to be president. I have no doubt he would be an amazingly popular professor, however.

Ken, you had me until your final line:

"Mitt Romney will be so beat up at the end by his own party it will be almost impossible for him to beat President Obama, and I for one, don't think the U.S. will survive and be recognized by us with four more years of Obama."

Ken, lets make a wager, shall we? And it doesn't even have to be a $10,000 dollar bet! Here's the wager, you either have credibility or you don't....

We should either believe what you say or not!

Simple, right?

If you voted for George W Bush, you have NO credibility. You have NO FORESIGHT into predicting what the next 4 years will be like.

So which is it?

Grover predicts "the Republicans will vote for the Republican and the Democrats will vote for the Democrat".

Of course. It is always that way. The key to an election is the middle.

To win the Republican party nomination, candidates have to take ridiculous positions which cost them votes with the moderates. The many hours of televised debates will haunt them. The Republican nominee will spend most of the national campaign trying to defend debate comments to appease the middle voters, while not losing the radicals of the base.

"...Assuming, that is, your values include wanting to see America become culturally riven, morally bankrupt, economically irresponsible...".

Then, yeah -- Gingrich is your man for president.

Excellent point.

Gotta wonder....
In the conspiracy ridden atmosphere, if this might be the plan for those who REALLY run the Republican Party?
After several years, the powers that be, now understand more about President Obama and how he operates.
Perhaps these other candidates are looked at as uncontainable, and uncontrollable "bombs" that could explode and destroy at any time?

To "embarrassed Utahn! | 5:08 a.m." what is so great about Obama? What has he done differently than Bush?

If you look into Obama and Bush, you will find that the only difference between the two is the magnitude of their mistakes.

To "Esquire | 8:17 a.m." isn't Europe on the verge of economic collapse, with Greece, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, and Italy leading the fall? Since they are collapsing, why would we want to model our government and government programs after anything that they are doing?

Sorry Ken but what you are suffering from is Bush blowback. To those that keep bringing up the socialism question, define it.

The Republican establishment despises Gingrich. They see a repeat of the Goldwater fiasco of 1964 coming if Gingrich is the nominee. They will do everything in their power to prevent him from getting that nomination. It still might not work, he might get it.

I bet Fox lines him up with Palin for another Vice Presidential run. A bullet to both feet.

We've gained jobs the past 22 months. No wonder so many of you think Obama is doing a bad job. You think he wants to destroy America and he cant even do that correctly.

And the Latest?

Michael Savage has offered Gingrich $1 MILLION to step down

Have those one the right completely lost their mind?

How is this not illegal?
