A Debate before the whole nation just weeks before the critical voting begins
is a Whole Lotta pressure, especially after all these weeks. It appears that all the politicians are stumbling at times. It's really hard to always be able
to see ahead for the consequences of remarks made spontaneously "off the cuff".

This is Debating at its highest level.

Good Luck to all of the candidates.

'By offering to bet Perry $10,000 that the Texas governor was dead wrong, the CEO of the 2002 Olympics is drawing fire from Republicans and Democrats alike.' - Article

If Mitt Romney did NOT make any changes to the healthcare legislation in his book, it is my duty to acknowledge that Romney was right.

Now, Mitt Romney betting $10,000 is not 'wrong' because he bet it.

It is wrong because America knows...he can.

A person who makes a little under $30,000, like myself, could never HOPE to honor a bet of say 'I bet a million dollars.'

Romney?

Yes, he can.

And how is he supposed to RELATE to a family who cannot pay their mortage?

Answer?

He cannot.

It's simple. Mitt called his bluff and Perry backed down. It was straitforward and in terms EVERYONE can understand. Bravo Romney! In a time when polotician, like Obama and Perry can say anything and get away with it. Mitt challenged the lie in an effective way. Nothing complicated about this, just dishonest media/journalist and bigots who want to tarnish his image.

Pagan, it's fallacious to believe that someone who has money cannot understand the needs of those who do not. If the man has money, it's his - not yours, and it doesn't make him less of a man for having earned it in his chosen path in life. He worked high risk business ventures, and won. Who begrudges someone who achieves success ? What's that all about - jealousy or bitterness are what come to mind to me right after being judgemental of a person who one doesn't even know in person. By all accounts, he's been an upstanding man his entire life.

Why a good LDS man was betting, I don't know. That, I'll give you. lol :)

@brother paul

So is this the type of childish banter we want our president engaging in when talking to world leaders and there is a "whole lotta pressure" on some important world issue?

Sorry Charlie!

so is this the childish way we want our president to act on the world stage when there is a "whole lotta pressure?" Do we really want them tarnishing our image with this type of school yard behaviors?

And guess who lost?

So, please, do not imply I am 'bitter' or 'jealous' and condoem me for my judgement of someone I do not know...

when you know nothing about me.

Are you not making judgments about me, yourself?

I enjoy how you claim Romney is an 'upstanding' man...

while, at the same time...

being unable to defend betting...

This is much ado about nothing.

Perry repeated (once again) a ridiculous claim that is totally false. Romney made a ridiculous "false" bet just to get Perry's attention.

This was the equivalent of hitting a donkey squarely between the eyes with a piece of lumber to get the donkey's attention.

This was a symbolic act, the $10,000 is used for its sheer size. It may actually show the opposite of what is implied. If Mitt was really out of touch he would have bet a million dollars.

Not only did Mitt live in humble circumstances in France, he was raised in the city of Detoit in a house that has since been leveled.

This was a stupid thing to say that will cost him. Best thing he could do is admit that it was a stupid thing to have said. This is not proof that he doesn't understand the middle class, but it certainly doesn't help promote a belief in his understanding of the middle class. Elections are about how people respond under pressure and this was not Mitt's greatest moment. Lets be honest, a $10.00 bet would not have opened the door for this type of criticism.

I would argue that his $10,000 bet isn't proof that he doesn't understand the middle class, the fact that he is republican and believes that tax cuts for the rich are the solution to all economic problems is the proof he doesn't understand the middle class.

Vote for MItt and maybe we all can afford the $10,000 bet when the economy turns around.

I think his bet was a nice way of saying, "Put your money where your mouth is", instead of calling him a liar. I believe that the press jumped on this because they want the election to be between Newt and Obama since they believe Obama can beat him, and that aren't sure Obama can beat Romney. The press is all about news, mostly bad news, and Obama keeps them in new material everyday.

Gingrich cheated on TWO previous spouses. Let me say that again: TWO, not one. If Gingrich won't keep his promises to his own wife(s), do you REALLY think he's going to keep any promise to you, a person he's never met and never will meet?

Give me a break.

The only reason the media said that Republicans were clamoring for an "anti-Romney" was to give the appearance that the nation actually wanted somebody other than Romney. Why would they do this? Because Romney scares the Democrats spitless. It is the Democrats who want anyone other than Romney and the liberal mainstream media is complicit in their attempt to annoint anyone other than Romney to run against Obama. Numbers like Newt recieved in the last 2 weeks are in part due to the kid gloves the media is handling Newt Gingrich (the anti-Romney) with.

The $10,000 "bet" is a perfet example of the liberal mainstream media making mountains out of molehills. Anything they can do to destroy Romney, they will do.

It doesn't matter which of these Republican wanna-bes wins the election. If any of them do, then America loses.

But for Romney to win -- a man who drove several American companies into bankruptcy, who sent scores of American jobs overseas, and who wants to kill the only potentially good improvement to American health care in years -- is elected, it will be a disaster.

By the way, a little research indicated that Rick Perry was correct. Some critical sentences had been removed when Romney's book was reprinted. Apparently so he would not be faced with more embarrassment over one more of his flips and flops. I'm trying to track down exactly what the changes were. I hope someone who can get the full story out in the press is doing the same. It all needs wide publicity. Maybe if that happens, we can prevent more of Mr. Romney's duplicity.

"And so, I lived in a way that people of lower-middle income in France lived."

Sure, in the same way Paris Hilton actually worked on a farm, and washed dishes in a greasy spoon restaurant...

It is easy for the rich to pretend to "live like the poor" for a temporary time, knowing they have their millions and mansions to return to once the game of pretend is done.

And that probably best describes Mitt Romney: Pretender.

Can't believe the ignorance of people. Why allow the media and journalist to shape your opinions.

Sorry guys, but this whole thing is so blown up and really no big deal, no matter what opinions flow from reporters.

This is why, we've elected corrupt leaders who have placed us into enormous debt and unemployment. We don't think, but react.

Corrupt government cannot exist with educated people. Hmmm! Who runs our schools?

@one old man, stated that "...a little research indicated that Rick Perry was correct." Really?

While you are doing your "research," you may want to take a look at Politifact's evaluation of Rick Perry's claim regarding this "bet." Politifact's ruling on the truthfulness of Perry's claim is as follows:

"Romney did support Massachusetts' individual mandate. But we don't see evidence in his hardcover book that he supported a federal one, much less that he removed such a reference from later editions. Perry's right that Romney's comments about health care were edited between editions. Among other things, a line that advocated the Massachusetts model as a strong option for other states was replaced by a shorter, more generic sentence. But that line was preceded by an argument for state-level solutions, exactly the argument Romney extends now.

"That's not how Perry characterized it... We rule his claim Mostly False."

You are probably 100% correct.

If that is the case, why Mr. Romney doesn't make that clarification. That would make much more sense than the irrelevant story about him not having a bath with a shower during his mission.

Another point:
I never knew the G.O.P. could put such a hilarious show on the road. Electrical fences, divine callings, mockery of child labor laws, bets, eight members supreme courts, etc.

During the Roman Empire the Senate and the emperor gave the circus to the people on time of crisis. The G.O.P. is contributing to our well being with a fantastic comedy show. Thank you G.O.P.

No contender for Obama in 2012... But that is not good either. That is not how a democracy should work.
