What does Bronco make?
Whitt is one of the best in the business. Well earned. Good job Dr. Hill.
Worth every penny!
This will stifle all those Y trolls who were desperately hoping Whitt took the
Arizona State job. So BYU can start beating the Utes again! Sorry Cougies, it
must be very frustrating losing 2 years in a row, 7 of 10, and losing the series
Bleed Crimson, your narrow minded comments don't even address the facts with
your football program. Your beloved Utes lost to Colorado. Colorado? And he's
getting a raise? What in the world are ya'll putting in your Gatorade water
buckets? Because I'd like to make sure my boss is drinking the same mind-numbing
fluid. (Wouldn't that be nice..... "Pete, you took a step backward in your
job and our company got beat by the worst team in the construction world, so how
about we talk about getting you a raise.....?) I wish my reality was as
oblivious to facts as the Utes are.....
Whitt rules! What program is that in the rearview mirror?Hang in there Band of Lil Brothers
This is further evidence that college athletics is out of control. $2 million to
pay a coach at a public school? Ridiculous. Put that money into the library! The
majority of athletic programs lost money last year, and they continue to inflate
salaries. Stop the madness!
@Pete in Texas "Your beloved Utes lost to Colorado. Colorado?
And he's getting a raise?"We did lose to Colorado, but I
believe the $200K raise was a result of the 54 - 10 beat down down in LES!Let see, thats about $4K per point!Try and reconstruct that
score!Hang in there Band of Lil Brothers
Smart Ute fans. And just in case anyone grumbles that Whit is over paid,
try looking around the country right now to find a proven quality coach. And one
who has:Proven he can win for several years, which means he's coaching his
own recruits.Remember, Urban's been gone for several years.Continues
to run a clean and reputable program with little or no drama.Has a fan
base that loves him AND an administration that does too, and wisely so. Count your blessings people.
Now I know who Coach Bronco wears a grey T shirt!He can't afford a
decent one.I say give Bronco a raise, he has to put up with the
Holmoe's "Indy Folly"
This is a well-deserved increase for Coach W. It also marks an escalation of
the divide between BYU and Utah that began when Utah accepted the invite to join
the Pac-12. BYU's subsequent move to independence and TV deal with
ESPN actually gave BYU a $$ edge over Utah for this season (BYU doesn't have to
split its TV/Bowl revenue with anyone else)--but only because Utah does not get
a fully vested share of TV monies this season. Going forward, it will be a
different story. The Pac-12's new TV package--shared among member
schools--promises the sort of revenue that is allowing these universities to
bring in new coaches and staffs at salaries that rival the SEC. Utah is now
able to up its budget for facilities and staff to help attract and keep the best
it can (keeping Witt is a good call, Dr. Hill).I do not believe that
BYU will ever try to compete with the $$ being thrown around by the major
conferences now and will continue to rely on loyalty, atmosphere, church
affiliation, and exposure as an independent to attract coaches and recruits.Which is where they should be.
AZnewser is right. We are in the worst economy since the Great Depression and
we are giving football coaches a raise to $2,000,000??? Heck, if most people
made $2M in ONE year they would be set for life. And he gets it for multiple
years. This just shows how screwed up sports really is.
Congrats, Coach Whitt, on a mediocre season and a $300k pay raise! Glad to see
a U employee make good on mediocrity. College Football is a joke
anymore and needs to be restrained.
@61CougarI actually agree with youGreat comment.
Money well spent!
I heard thru the grapevine that Whitt is getting the money from a deduction from
coach K's salary. Pretty soon the one sport u will funnel all the money from all
the coaches salaries into one pot for coach W. A food drive will then be the
price of admission for all other sports to feed the coaches and their families
since being in the conference of chumpions is pay enough for them.
To Mr. Obvious, Again, I state the question, Whit's getting a raise
based SOLELY on beating BYU this year 54-10? The rest of the season isn't even
factored in especially losing to the last placed team in your own conference?Sheesh.... and ya'll refer to BYU as the little brother? I hate to say
it, but this goes back to the Lavell era when all Utah fans cared about was
beating BYU. It didn't matter if every other game was a loss, they simply wanted
to beat the rival. So BYU went on to win how many conference championships and
be rated in the Top 25 how many years, and all Utah fans would say was,
"Well, we beat BYU!"Talk about an inferiority complex. I
hate to say it, but spiked Gatorade and Crimson-colored glasses may not be all
ya'll need to stay happy. It sounds like you need some counseling from someone
with the letters "PhD" listed after their name......
@ Pete in Texas"Bleed Crimson, your narrow minded comments
don't even address the facts with your football program. Your beloved Utes lost
to Colorado. Colorado? And he's getting a raise?" Actually I am
addressing the facts. My beloved Utes thumped your Cougies pretty bad, in fact
it was 54-10 bad? Yes we lost to the Buffs, but I find it interesting that Y
fans have to parade behind Colorado's team because BYU couldn't get the job
done. "What in the world are ya'll putting in your Gatorade
water buckets? To answer your question: On the Utah sidelines we
drink normal Gatorade, what do they put in the Cougar's drink buckets on the
sidelines pickle juice or something? lol! "I wish my reality
was as oblivious to facts as the Utes are"Pete in Texas the
reality is the Utes are in the Pac-12, Coach Whitt gets raise, Utah runs BYU out
of their own stadium. Delusion is BYU going Independent thinking it's the best
move a team can make, when reality is they have nothing to play for. I drink Gatorade and that's Reality!
@ Pete in Texas"Sheesh.... and ya'll refer to BYU as the little
brother? I hate to say it, but this goes back to the Lavell era when all Utah
fans cared about was beating BYU."Lavell who?Hang
in there Band of Lil Brothers!
Bleed Crimson, You want to talk reality, but you shrug off the
number of conference championships that you've won compared to your "little
brother". You want to talk reality beating your own chest saying you beat
BYU this year, but you shrug off losing to the worst team in your own
conference. You want to talk reality by saying Utah is in the Pac 12, but you
aren't full partners this year so you shrug off that BYU made more money than
your college this year while being independent and having "nothing to play
for". You want to talk reality and justify Coach Whit's raise by producing
a record worse this year than last. Call me when your idea of
reality actually resembles what reality is.
Blueprint for getting a raise at the U: Go 7-5 and make sure one of your wins
is the BYU game. The 12 pac south is down, way down this year. Dr.
Hill will likely regret this decision when USC is no longer banned from
postseason play and ASU, Arizona and UCLA improve just enough to work the utes
Pete in Texas -You wrote; "Your beloved Utes lost to Colorado.
Colorado? And he's getting a raise?"_________________________I won't question your own right to question whether Whitt deserved a
raise, but keep this in mind; though Colorado had a terrible record this year,
they had the 18th rated strength of schedule. Add to that a TON of injuries to
their starters this year. That loss was a bad one for the Utes no
question, but they never should have overlooked them in the first place...they
weren't near as bad as their record. Same could be said for the rest of the
bottom half of the Pac 12 and other strong conferences ... tough schedules
usually = misleading records.A 3-10 PAC 12 team is probably about equal to
a 7-6 WAC team.
@ AZnewser Kindly remember that some of those wages are paid through
endorsements, TV appearances, endorsementas and the fact that the Utes get a big
cut of the 2 million + from the Sun Bowl. Not all are state funds are
financing this raise, as better than 40 % are from outside sources such as the
contract/ endorsement from Under Armor. Also the bonus was included in the
contract to include bowl appearances. Again not all is generated from
state funds. Now Bronco does not have to reveal his income, but I imagine
Holmo will try and keep up with the Whitt on the hill,
First, BYU will pay decent wages to its coaches, but doubt they will ever be
part if the wage escalation going on. Whit does 2 things very well - (1) he
gets his teams very prepared against BYU as he understands every Ute fans dream
and (2) he gets into a discussion every year with some school seeking a coach
enough to go get another pay increase. We should expect a number of these in
the coming years.
Rise and Shout - didn't Bronco get a new contract last year after a poor season
and a loss to Utah?
As a die hard BYU fan, I congratulate Coach Whittingham on getting a raise. Perhaps the 2011 regular season didn't finish the way Ute fans would
have liked, but a 7-5 season with a trip to the Sun Bowl to play Georgia Tech on
CBS is pretty good for your debut in the PAC 12.But with a bigger
salary comes greater pressure to perform.I believe Coach Whittingham
is still in his honeymoon period as the Utes head coach moving to the PAC 12,
but let's say by 2015 the Utes still haven't reached the Rose Bowl or even the
PAC 12 Championship game. Let's say they lose one or two games against my BYU
Cougars and maybe a few bowl games too. In a nutshell Ute fans,
where do you expect to see the Ute football team in three, maybe four years? As for the Ute comments ending with the phrase, "Hang in there Band
of Lil Brothers!" I want to personally thank those who have posted this.We may be rivals, but we are still brothers. We come from the same
state, and breath the same mountain air. Ute fans, I love you,
Rise and Shout -"Blueprint for getting a raise at the U: Go 7-5 and
make sure one of your wins is the BYU game."________________________Actually, blueprint for getting a raise at
the U: Coach in 2 BCS games in a 4 year span, have programs such as Tennessee
and Penn State after you (among many others) AND ... beat your rival at their
place 54-10.Does that clear it up for you?
So here is how the PAC-12 South worked out:ASU goes 4-5 in
conference, takes 3rd in the South (tie-breaker over Utah), and embarasses
itself at the end of the year. Result: FIRE THE COACH!!!UCLA goes
5-4 in conference, takes 2nd to represent the South in the conference
championship, and embarasses itself at the end of the year. Result: FIRE THE
COACH!!Utah goes 4-5 in conference with the easiest of all PAC12
schedules, takes 4th in the South, and embarrasses itself with a home lose to
Colorado to end the season. Result: WE BEAT BYU!!! Give Whitt a raise!
@ Pete in Texas The reality is you woke up on the wrong side of the
bed today. Chill out! You sound like a jealous little brother. "You want to talk reality, but you shrug off the number of conference
championships that you've won compared to your "little brother".
Reality is you need to get your facts straight. Utah has won more
conference titles than BYU 24-23, Look it up! Football was played prior to
1972."You want to talk reality beating your own chest saying
you beat BYU this year, but you shrug off losing to the worst team in your own
conference".Again, refer back to my last comment. You Y fans
parade behind other teams that beat us when you failed to get the job done. Yes
we lost to Colorado and I do recognize that.Yes BYU will make more
money this year, but next year our 50 percent share will be about equal to your
ESPN deal. 2014 and beyond Utah will be making up to 30 million a year including
the Pac-12 networks, Conference title game, and bowl money. No need
to call you until reality of your facts are correct.
ClarkHippo -Nice post, props for rising above the garbage that gets
thrown around ... and that's me admitting I get caught up in it at times as
well, which I always regret. You're a classy BYU fan.Go Utes.
Hey Orgonian. The Utes went to a BCS game this year. I mean last year. Well,
maybe 4 years ago, but who cares. So the Utes lost to the mighty Colorado
Buffalos. WHO CARES? Didn't Colorado win a National Championship last year or
the year before? Whit is the best coach in the country. Pay him like 20 million
and it would still be a bargain.
@Oregonian 12:28Don't forget however, this was Utah's first year in
the PAC 12. If the Utes had finished with say a 4-8 or 3-9 record, I
don't think Coach Whittingham would be getting a raise. But I also don't think
he would have gotten fired either.Even though many die hard Ute fans
were predicting an undefeated season, with a win in the BCS Championship
game:"Mark It Down!""Write It
Down!"Dr. Hill and Coach Whitt were more realistic and knew
this would be a season of adjustments.I may be a BYU fan, but my
hope is the Ute athletic program doesn't invest everything in its football team
and ignore men's basketball, thinking somehow it will fix itself. An honest perspective tells me Utah's football team is stronger and going in
better direction than BYU's football team. (BYU's 2012 season is going to be
tougher than 2011. Fewer cupcake games for sure)But as for men's
basketball ... well ... congrats to Coach Whitt for getting a raise.
@OregonianI know, isn't football beautiful?Utah by 44
The "free market"! (Does the Y business school teach this - or the
"united order"?) That is why coach Whit got the raise. Both the U
and others understand how good of a coach Whit is. Therefore, schools such as
Tennessee, Penn State, Arizona State, and others (?) want coach Whit! Utah felt
it necessary to reward coach Whit for his achievements and to keep him here.
Plain and simple - the free market. This is something the Y's
program does not have to worry about.
Yes, let's give raises to coaches who have a winning record, like Kyle had... a
few years ago, but not this year. $300,000 raise for doing what?
seems like s weird time to give a coach a 500k raise - economy is on life
support and 9% unemployment and university tuition continuing to rise so give
the coach a big HUGE raise? 2.2 mil per year! Really? I am think what U students
think when they see their tuition going up and up to support Coaches salary.
@motorbike 12:32Thanks for the compliment. I admit I've thrown a
little mud in my day as well, but from now on, when it comes to comments on
message boards such as these, my philosophy is, I'll just pretend I'm sitting
down to dinner with my older sister and her husband and we're talking sports. My older sister is currently a student at the U of U and she and her
husband are die hard Ute fans. After the 54-10 game, she called me on the phone
and asked if she could buy me an apple, cherry or blueberry turnover. What a sweetheart!I love BYU football but my sister and I are
super close so we don't take the rivalry too seriously. After the BYU/Utah
basketball game this past weekend, I thought about texting her some funny
message, but I thought better of it.
Ha Ha Ha Ha ...no comment!!!Go Trojans!
@AZnewser The program is (or will be) bringing in about 15 times as
much as Whitingham is getting paid. That's not a bad investment, is it?
Whitingham makes that University money. Learn the facts. People who make a lot
of money are generally well worth it.@Y Grad Pumping Gas"Now I know who Coach Bronco wears a grey T shirt!"And
soon you will be able to learn how to write a sentence that makes total sense!
Motorbike, you seem a sensible fellow, so I'll keep it civil with you: Truth be told, I like Whittingham. He seems a good man and I gotta respect
what he's done for the program. In truth, I like what Ron McBride started
way-back-when and I'm satisified that Whittingham will keep the ball rolling.
I'm 40, so I remember football back into the 70's. It's nice to seem Utah
getting national respect because that legitimizes who BYU's been playing all
these years. Utah has stepped their game up immensely from back then and I
congratulate them for it. However, due to the fact that I can show some respect
for the Utes as a gentleman, I gotta tell you that them giving him a raise after
this year's record seriously shocked me. I mean, could you see that coming? A
couple of posts said it correctly, the extra money could have gone to other
areas of the school. Whit didn't need extra rewards after going 4-5 in his own
conference. Nobody was going to come beating down his door to get him to coach
their team. Not sure why he needed a raise with that kind of record.
With Whittingham's handling of the QB situation and the team's debacle against
Colorado, he should have been fired.
re: ClarkHippoutah won't be able to hang their successes on beating
BYU in the future. They refuse to schedule BYU after the 2012 season and
instead prefer to hide behind their 'difficult' pac12 schedule.re:
motorbikeLet's not forget that kyle was not the HC during the 2004
season in which you went to your first BCS game.re: GoUtesYou're right ... Colorado did win a National Championship, but um .. it was
only 21 yrs ago. Sorry but they haven't had a winning record since 2005 (7-6).
They really are a terrible team. Hadn't won a game on the road in 4 yrs until
they beat your utes. Thanks for sending their senior players off with a road
win for the first time in their careers. hahahaha
patriot -So Whittingham has his hand in 2 BCS wins (a lot of money),
helps get them invited to the Pac 12 (a lot of money), leads them to a winning
record and a $2Mil bowl game with a DIII QB in their inaugural Pac 12 season,
and yet you act as though the U used their entire academic budget and are also
having to steal from the poor to give him a raise? Please! Whittingham's
accomplishments this year and in previous years have helped lighten the load
financially for the entire athletic department. I know you're still bitter about
the U being invited to the Pac 12 but it's time you start dealing with the
reality of it instead of trying to spin things in directions that have no
merit.Congrats Kyle. And memo to Dr. Hill; keep matching any serious
offer that comes Kyle's way.Go Utes!
Question:Given the opportunity would you "invest" two
dollars for a return of twenty-five to thirty? If you "only" got ten
to fifteen the first time and fifteen to twenty-five the second and then
twenty-five to thirty every time thereafter would that change you mind? Well, that is what the University of Utah just did only they did it a
million times.Does that help your understanding?
@AltaHawkFan 1:30I have read at least two college football websites
which say the BYU/Utah game is still a go up to at least 2015. If I'm wrong,
please tell me your source.
Pet In Texas -"Nobody was going to come beating down his door
to get him to coach their team. Not sure why he needed a raise with that kind of
record."______________I understand what you're saying but
it's the above statement where you're going wrong - teams ARE "beating down
his door to get him to coach their team" and that's exactly why he got the
raise. With that being the case, what would you have done differently if
you were Dr. Hill? Hasn't Whittingham been a humongous part of a serious
infusion of money that will now be coming into the Utah athletic program? And
don't you believe he is probably the best coach for the Utah program?
How is it that this comment board has turned into a red and blue rivalry? Good for coach Whittingham. Good for Utah.
AltaHawkFan re: motorbike"Let's not forget that kyle was not
the HC during the 2004 season in which you went to your first BCS game."________________Read more carefully...I said "coached
in" two BCS victories. By the way, since you're looking for
technicalities, Whittingham actually was a Head Coach in the Fiesta Bowl. He was
officially Co-Head coach with Urban Meyer.
Who Am I Sir -"Given the opportunity would you
"invest" two dollars for a return of twenty-five to thirty? If you
"only" got ten to fifteen the first time and fifteen to twenty-five

Sorry Pete in Texas, I called you "Pet" above - hahaha. Not deliberate
I assure you.
A Phoenix TV sportscaster said that Whitt is at Utah for life, and that he was
just playing ASU to up his salary...So C.Hill was right to make the
offer to keep Whitt from leaving.
re: ClarkHippoI believe that those websites are speculating that the
series will continue but from what I've read, no contract has been signed for
games beyond next year.re: motorbikeI read what you
wrote and understood it. I also think you were trying to deceive in a sense.
Hence, my clarification. urban was the head coach for the 2004 season despite
what honorary title they gave kyle for the bowl game.re: JDLHaven't you heard ? The BYU/utah rivalry is dead. Only the
Colorado/utah rivalry matters now.
AltaHawk fan. Sarcasm look it up and then go read Goutes post.
re: SpanishThat doesn't make sense at all. If kyle was at utah 'for
life', then hill didn't need to increase his salary. He wasn't going anywhere.
"The Quest for Mediocrity"... and a hefty raise...
Good job keeping Whittingham, he is a fairly good coach(7-5). But I agree,
sports are just messed up. Explain how he deserves a big raise for one
non-conference win in september but no blame for 3 conference blowouts and a
complete conference debacle in November? Seems strange. While UCLA fires their
coach who took them to the championship game! Why didn't Rick N. get a hefty
raise?Just doesn't make sense, since getting to the Rose bowl is the end all and
be all of college football at least that's what we've heard all season.
re: factcheckYou look up the definition of sarcasm. GoUtes comment
may have been something, but it wasn't sarcasm.
There's something wrong with our system when a college football coach makes $2M,
the President of the US makes $400,000 and a high school math teacher makes
$40,000 per year. All three are government employees, paid for by our hard
earned tax dollars.
AltaHawkFan -"I read what you wrote and understood it. I also think
you were trying to deceive in a sense"______________You've very wrong and perhaps a little paranoid my friend. I had no intention
of deceit in the slightest, resorting to such silliness is not something I feel
a need for. "Coached in two BCS Bowls" means exactly that, and I
believe most readers here would take that to mean exactly what I meant - coached
in, not head coached in.
so, did a lot of you not read the article? coach whittingham is getting a raise
because he's high in demand and chris hill wants to keep him around.yeah, utah went 7-5 and lost an embarrassment of a game to colorado, but that
doesn't stop a lot of high profile universities from coming after whit.gene chizik had something like a 5-19 overall record as the coach at iowa
state and auburn hired him. people were furious. guess what? he won a
national championship. oops... there goes the nc words.and please
stop turning this into a byu/utah thing. whittingham got his raise because he's
a utah man, born and raised and established here. he's the right guy for the
First, congratulations to Coach. Well deserved. Second, Urban left
Utah 7 years ago for $2 million a year. It is good to see Utah finally up to
that level. Of course, Urban just signed with Ohio State for closer to $6
million. In the last year in the Mountain West, Utah still took in
$21 million for football according to equity in athletics. This year, who
knows. The media contract (just for the extra games added to the schedule to
accommodate Utah and Colorado) is better than that for the MWC. And Utah's
share of the Rose, Fiesta, Alamo, Holiday, Sun, Las Vegas, and Kraft Fight
Hunger is going to be a lot better than the share from the bowls last year. And the future simply looks greener. Coach has been the factor behind
this opportunity and I am sure the university wants to ensure he doesn't leave.
Yes, losing to Colorado is a fact. But, it hardly defines the
program Whitt has built (both with McBride and Meyer or as head coach) on the

just saying Hawk what I heard on TV. The Phoenix channels are saying Kyle was

CougFaninTX - that's like saying that Bronco's salary is paid by

There isn't a person on this message board that wouldn't want more money for the
work they do today. Who cares if Whitt played Utah against ASU, or Tennessee?
They called, he listened. He told Hill what they offered, and it was Hill who
ultimately made the decision to give him more money. He's now in line with his
Pac12 counterparts. No big deal. Good for Whitt, and good luck for the
Utes...except when they play BYU.
It was just a week ago when Ute fans were upset with the Cougar fans piling it
on about basketball. True colors have come out.
Good for coach Whitt! Good man, solid coach. Well deserved.
We will never know what Bronco makes and we don't ever need to. Salaries of
coaches is something kept well under the vest down in Provo. Secondly, 7 of ten
is no where near as great as 6 in a row and 10 of 11...... We are slowly inching
our way to 13 in a row.... It will be more impressive than the 12 straight the
Utes took by one game and the fact that it spans more time in years. All the
whoopty doo 12 means is that BYU didn't beat Utah for 6 straight years at two
games a piece.... Yet, ya have to factor in conference tournament appearances
which had existed through the years.... You can own us on the football field and
we will continue to 128-125 and growing own your tukuses on the hardwood.
Basketball means every bit as much to the players as football does to its. Face
reality and you will be free... Hide behind the fiction of your red colored
glasses and your happiness will only be a facade of inner turmoil.
Arguably we got into the PAC-12 in large part due to his coaching so considering
the income going into the program it's only fair.
You are all geniuses talking about this raise being based on this season....
Coaching is a contract based salaried position. I would have to guess that this
raise was more factually based on the first ten percent of his coaching career
with victories over Alabama, an undefeated season and to catch up with the
joneses conference wide rather than this season.. So please... All you in your
little ute or cougar fantasy land wake up to the cold hard truth that this
season only factored in slightly or Chris Hill is truly more a madman than a
'genius'. I will say this that I am not at all impressed with the lunacy of the
Coach Whit has been very loyal to the Utes and was probably underpaid in the
past. Great to see him get a raise and an extension. For all those
comments that he is overpaid, you should look at the market for his job position
- he is basically in the middle of the coaches in the conference which is what
sets market value. Are coaches over paid? Sure but so are movie stars, pro
athletes, and many other positions in life.
Evidence of pure insanity. And then they have the nerve to call it "higher
education." In organizations that are basically devoid of competition,
politics rules. THAT'S probably the game that old Whit plays the best. Like,
"I'm a dead-serious coach who's determined to get the best out of my kids
every time, and I'm big-time analytical and civic-minded." Any money
earned out of the programs comes from the whole investment, and I doubt you
factor in the cost of facilities, support staff, etc., etc. It sure is a game,
and the students and taxpayers are the ones funding it all.
Yes Whitt is in demand and Utah paid to keep him. He is a good coach. Unfortunately BYU not in demand. No conference will take us and that is
costing us more potential revenue because of our stubborn ESPN contract.
realsoothsayer -"Any money earned out of the programs comes
from the whole investment, and I doubt you factor in the cost of facilities,
support staff, etc., etc. It sure is a game, and the students and taxpayers are
the ones funding it all."______________Actually, Utah
athletic facilities are almost entirely paid for by donation dollars. Athletic programs (scholarships, coaches salaries, equipment, facility

Whittingham, which means...pay raise.Yes the salaries are certainly
getting crazy high, but one still has to look at what that position is worth in
the entire financial scheme of things when the team is successful. Because of
the huge TV contract, Pac 12 schools are now planning the return of several
sport programs that never existed or were cancelled years ago, all due to the
number one revenue generator in college sports...football. This all
equals... get, and try to keep, the right coach.
Happy to hear that Whit. is getting paid what he's worth! His program brings in
A LOT of money into the program. Yes, it's a staggering amount of money he's
getting paid, but....it's even more staggering how much Football brings in. GO UTES & keep up the GRRRRREAT job Kyle!!!
@motorbikeActually your assertion that donations almost entirely pay
for athletic facilities is not true. utah runs a deficit and student fees are
given to athletics to make up the shortfall. That means the donation dollars are
being taken from day to day operations and then applied to other things. Not
that I care, I really don't, but truth is truth.Also I don't care
what whittingham is paid but if the assertions that he played asu to get a raise
out of utah are true then he is an absolute hypocrite. He claimed he does not
care at all about the money when he took the job and also last time he got a
raise. Now I personally doubt he used asu as leverage for a raise, although I
also don't entirely believe him when he said he doesn't care about the money. He
cares about it or else he would simply turn it down. But good for him. take it
while you can get it. I would. I just wouldn't pretend I didn't care about it.
I cannot imagine what hill will have to pay him when he recruits a quarterback.
But I am happy to congradulate any successful cougar alumni.
Congrats to Whit.
I agree that it's absurd to pay a coach $2 million. But at least Coach Whit puts
in the long hours and deals with the stress. Hire/fire assistant coaches,
recruiting, game prep, player injuries, player attitudes, off-field incidents,
regroup after losses, keep players/team from getting a big head after wins,
in-game decisions, halftime adjustments, etc. But what is truly
disgusting is Albert Pujols getting $25 million A YEAR to hit a baseball. I
would add fielding to his job description, but he plays first base, so not
All you folks whining about how much he gets paid have to realize how much a
great coach is worth to a university. A bad coach will cost his university much
more that a good coach who is paid a bit more. They are giving him a raise
because he is that valuable to the school. The football team brings in loads of
He lives off of urbans recruits. How can they justify keeping him around,
let alone a raise?
So, how much of that $2 million comes from taxpayers?
Ducky,Credit where credit is due. You're absolutely correct about
student fees having to cover shortfalls in facility funding. However, that to
will now be softened by the infusion of PAC 12 money.
Ridiculous. NCAA and the U need to put a salary cap on coaches salaries. Like
$250k. Put the rest towards dropping student tuition.
re: motorbikeNothing I wrote was wrong. kyle was not the head coach

middle-of-the-road pac12 coach. I don't care.
What a twisted sense of priorities.Roughly 200k per game.This
will prove to be a waste of even more Taxpayers money, just as it was when Utah
was paying 3 Basketball Head Coaches at the same time. Now it's down to just
2.Simply amazing that the 2nd smallest stadium, next to last in
attendance and only the 10th ranked Academic institutuion in the Pac 12 can
waste taxpayers money like this. The Taxpayers bought the U of U
Olympic stadium, they (UofU) pay their Engineering Professors 140k per year (for
4 hrs a week in the classroom), and we all wonder why Tution keeps going up and

before construction begins. They are Fiscally Responsible. Utah is not.BYU does not need the hard earned Taxpayers dollars to build their
facilities either. So enjoy your new 80k sq. ft. football facility,
while BYU enjoys their 125k sq. ft. facility. And enjoy the U's 80k

reason why the Y runs things in the Black, and the U is always in the Red.
@JP Skillet "CougFaninTX - that's like saying that Bronco's

Most of BYU's turnovers were self-inflicted and you know it. It would be a

@ Bluto: You said: A Coach who couldn't get his team focused enough to

Every team has a bad game once in a while. Second, that was in no way our
biggest game in school history. Third, Witt has gotten his team up to win many
big games including the Sugar Bowl. Fourth, how well did bronco do at getting
his team up for a game against a team that would go on to lose to Colorado? Bye
the way, bronco will never have to worry about getting his team up to win a game
like the Sugar Bowl, because he will never make it to a game like that.
Kyle's team is 7-5 and he receives a raise to $2 million a year along with an

more than what the average teacher in Utah makes, some of whom are outstanding
at their work.If the U wants to use private donations to award Kyle
for his mediocre performance coaching 12 or 13 games a year, so be it. Let the
private donors throw their money away, but stop wasting tax-payer money just
because "everyone else" is doing it.Meanwhile, Governor

that his raise was based on more than this season alone. You said: BYU

Utah may be in the market for a new offensive coordinator. Chow is apparently
interested in becoming Hawaii's new head coach. lol I suppose the new OC won't

AltaHawkFan"Nothing I wrote was wrong...I'm glad you're fine paying
kyle $2.2 million/yr for being a middle-of-the-road pac12 coach. I don't

post about 10 comments about it.And by the way, you absolutely were
wrong...you were wrong in your insinuation that I was trying to mislead by
saying Whittingham coached in two BCS victories when I was most certainly not
trying to mislead a single soul. One last time for you...see if you can
follow this; coached in, does NOT mean Head Coached in. You're simply
hypersensitive to anything that could remotely be misinterpreted in an extra
pro-Ute way.And the fact does still remain that even had I wanted to say
he "Head Coached" in two BCS victories, I could say it and it would be
true. You should have walked away from that initial comment thinking I had taken
the high road by simply saying "coached."I'm done with
this...you're way too blue to think straight.
Bluto -You need to do your research. Pretty much everything you
wrote is incorrect.Do you realize that Utah's athletic budget is in better
shape than most of the nation? They've been a model for how to financially plan
for growth without dipping too far into debt. This isn't to say they never
finance anything, but most of their facilities have been built almost entirely
with Donor dollars...you might take note of the names on the buildings. Those
projects are always spec'ed out, road mapped and then fundraising begins. The
ground never breaks until a certain percentage of the funds have already been
found. As for your awesome facilities down south and how BIG they are ...
who cares?BYU has a theory of making everything look good by being bigger.
Meanwhile when Utah builds something they don't mind sacrificing size for
quality.Marriott Center - Large. Barn like feel. BLEACHERS!!! Seats too
close together...my knees are in the people's heads in front of me. You can have
it.LES - reference Marriott Center above. You can have it.Lastly,
some of your tax dollars may go to the U... but little to none go to Athletics.
Now my tithing...
Ironman - Time to wake up. Your tax dollars are not paying
Whittingham's salary. If they were, football would've been abandoned long
ago.ESPN, FoxSports, Under Armour, PAC 12 bowl revenue, merchandise sales,
etc, etc.... are what pays Whittingham's salary. And by the way, there's a
lot of room for growth!
BYU fans bashing on Whit's reputation-Give Utah coaches some credit.
You know as well as i do that Bronco probably couldn't have done a good of job
with this season as Whit did. I'm not trying to draw some kind of hostile
reaction, but BYU couldn't beat a decent team this year with 3 good
quarterbacks. To go 7-5 with a guy like Hays at the helm is an accomplishment,
not to mention injuries to many other key players. Also, his past feats more
than make this pay raise legitimate. BYU fans who feel the extra
200k he's getting a year would be better spent somewhere else-Don't
worry about where your taxpayer dollars are going. There has been more
construction and building renovations going on at the U of U campus lately than
you could care to dream about. I would know, I have to find a detour around them
to get to class every day. Do some research please.
This raise, like those of many other coaches across the nation are way out of
line. The rate of pay for D-1 football and basketball coaches in all the BCS
conferences across the country is destroying Olympic sports at those schools.
No coach is worth 2.something million dollars a year. Now before you Utes think
I am a bitter Cougar, I am not. I am a bitter supporter of all Olympic sports.
Major college basketball and football salaries are destroying sports like cross
country, track and field, gymnastics and swimming and diving. In many
instances, ADs take the monies needed to run these sports and feed their FB and
BB programs. BTW most monies from the TV and BCS do not go to the general funds
of colleges, they go to athletics. The U will not see tuition fees lower, and
the college professors will not get paid anymore simply because you are a member
of an AQ conference. College football and basketball are nothing more then
highly paid professional athlete development programs. If anyone wants to watch
truly dedicated STUDENT-athletes then support your local Olympic sports
programs, or a D-2, D-3 school.

Well deserved raise for an outstanding coach.
BlutoYou mad bro? Take it easy and stop trying to shove down
everyone's throat your slanted rhetoric. It's okay that Utah trumps BYU in many
things, it's not the end of the world. I do realize that BYU has certain
aspects that are 'better' than the U. But I don't base my happiness on being
'better' than someone or something else. Let it go man, you'll feel a lot
better.I agree that college football coaches are overpaid. But the
athletic department is probably much more informed and savvy with the way things
are done. Invest a couple hundred thousand a year more, and hope for a
successful season that would return more in the end. That's how investments
work. I believe Coach Whitt is here to stay for quite some time.
This is 'his' program and he has a lot of power and authority in how things are

Let's see. Whittinghams team finishes 7-5, barely bowl-eligible, finishes
somewhere in the middle of the PAC12, loses to the worst team in the conference
and barely beats the third worst team and has the BYU game handed to him and he
gets a big raise. Question is: If he gets beat by BYU next year does he give
back the money? Also, does he get extra pay for calling for an onsides kick when
he's up by forty? I'm one who hopes he never leaves Utah. He and they deserve
I may be wrong, but it does look like the BYU juggernaut is headed down hill
with a coach that cannot win the big games. Indy in the long run will fail. But
perhaps the BYU Board knows something that most of us don't know.
I love the PAC 12 envy seething from the Cougar Nation at the news of Coach
Whit's raise. The other great thing is that not only was Whit taken
care of, but also the assistant coaches.Big boy coaches in big boy
conferences deserve big boy money.
gchris -"I'm one who hopes he never leaves Utah. He and they
deserve each other. "___________I agree, it's a match
made in heaven! Thanks for the well wishes gchris, and I too hope Bronco and BYU
stay together forever. I could really get used to 54-10, in Provo no less.
@Cougfan in TXNo taxes used for Coach Whit, all coaches salaries and
player scholarships are paid for by money raised for athletic dept. (Crimson
Club, Individual donations, Consessions, Sports property sales, etc. Coach Whit
is now right in the middle of pay as far as PAC-12 coaches go. As far as this
Ute goes he should be more toward the top.
@gchrisNow going back to that Wyoming game is as funning as you
thinking he is going to loose to byu next year. Utah right now is far above byu
in football you cougar fans just have a very hard time saying so. The coaching
at the U and especially the player talent is far superior to the y. The y had a
very good season against a very week schedule, they did not play close to a
PAC-12 schedule. gchris, yes we lost to Colorado but you guys keep
throwing that back at our face, we beat you by 44 pts. It's time to be quite
about all that now, after watching PAC-12 football for a season, it is a totally
different game. Until byu plays week after week of BCS football you will never,
ever have an idea what it is all about. And yes we do deserve Coach
Howard S says "Big boy coaches in big boy conferences deserve big boy

can just hear the u fans now. Time is so sweet when it bears out the way things
really are. The u was a middle of the pack MWC team for so many, many years and
now that they are in the "Conference of Champions", they will be at or
near the bottom and still boast of their status but go nowhere....real fast.
@eddie "The u was a middle of the pack MWC team for so many, many
years"Wake up, the utes were never a middle of the pack
mountain west team. The utes had two BCS wins with two undfeated seasons in the
mountain west. Something the Y can never do, take this year for example. Perfect
year for the Y to have their shot at a BCS game. They play the bottom half of
the wac schedule, and get texas and utah who both have a down year. All that and
they still can't make it happen, and get embarrased at home by their rival to
@2BCSWINSKeep up with your memory of just the past couple of years. Please
look at ALL the time u were in the MWC. How many conference championships did u
win? How many did u win while in the WAC? U do not have a storied program and
yes, u were in the middle most of the time. As to your "something the Y can
never do", Never is a long time and it was in 1984 that we did win a NC.
Now that is something that the u will never do!
Eddie-How about this, we as utah fans will acknowledge that BYU was
all-dominant and that we would have loved to be in your situation in the 70's
and 80's, and you can admit that you are 100% jealous that Utah busted the BCS
twice in the last decade, were invited to the Pac 12, and have a good chance of
challenging for the Pac-12 south in the future. Face it, you can not honestly
say that you would trade MWC and WAC championships for going to (and winning)
New flash Eddie, BYU did not win a National Championship in 1984, there was no
championship game. All BYU did was beat a lousy 6-5 Michigan team (close game
despite that fact) in a third rate bowl and a bunch of unranked WAC teams. Then
somehow, via a fluke in the rules where BYU wound up the only undefeated team in
the country (not hard when you play such a weak schedule) BYU lucked out and was
AWARDED (did not win) the NC which led to many collective moans across the
country (i.e. Bo Diddly Tech references); 1984 is not something I would be
touting as most people outside of Utah view it as a mistake as BYU beat nobody
that made the final top 25; that deserves the NC?. Lets see, beating no final
ranked teams and then barely beating a 6-5 barley bowl eligible Michigan team in
a third rate bowl nobody watched or beating two top 10 and an a additional two
top 25 teams including a beat down of a former #1 (earlier in the season) SEC
power Alabama Crimson Tide team in a major bowl; not to mention 2004; enough

TCU also won 4 MWC championships during THEIR tenure from 2005-2011. Both Utah
and TCU had 2 undefeated seasons and 2 BCS bowls. The Y won 4 MWC
championships, but they were never dominant enough to bust the BCS. Edge: Utah
and TCU.As for the WAC...who cares? They Y dominated the WAC once
the Arizona schools left, but by the time they advanced to the MWC, their days
of glory were long gone. The cougars have become an irrelevant has-been. First
Bronco had his players lie down on the field at LES and dream of past glories.
Then he played his final 2009 regular season game in the cougars' WAC glory
years bright royal blue colors. Then finally, he and Holmoe negotiated for
readmission to that lower-tiered mid-majorey league. The WAC is where you

Utah and TCU.Have fun down there in the WAC. I'm sure you win lots
of games vs. those cupcake league members.
to Bleed Crimson:Your comments make me laugh! Every single post

how bad BYU is. How important Utah is now that you are in the PAC-12, and how
irrelevant BYU is going off into independence and obscurity, etc. You see the
theme here. And yet, when BYU fans point out that Utah had a mediocre
season at best, and lost to the doormat of the PAC-12, your comeback is...Utah beat BYU 54-10 and that justifies Whittingham's salary increase! You can't have it both ways - either:1) BYU isn't relevant
as you so loudly proclaim over and over and over ad nauseum, or2)
BYU is relevant and you define success for your season(s) on beating BYU Which is it? If BYU announced a huge salary increase for Bronco
Mendenhall and BYU fans loudly trumpeted to the world that Coach Mendenhall
deserved the pay raise because we thumped FCS Idaho State 56-3, you would die
