First, congratulations to Coach. Well deserved.

Second, Urban left Utah 7 years ago for $2 million a year. It is good to see Utah finally up to that level. Of course, Urban just signed with Ohio State for closer to $6 million.

In the last year in the Mountain West, Utah still took in $21 million for football according to equity in athletics. This year, who knows. The media contract (just for the extra games added to the schedule to accommodate Utah and Colorado) is better than that for the MWC. And Utah's share of the Rose, Fiesta, Alamo, Holiday, Sun, Las Vegas, and Kraft Fight Hunger is going to be a lot better than the share from the bowls last year.

And the future simply looks greener. Coach has been the factor behind this opportunity and I am sure the university wants to ensure he doesn't leave.

Yes, losing to Colorado is a fact. But, it hardly defines the program Whitt has built (both with McBride and Meyer or as head coach) on the hill.

Yeah right. Then, why feel the need to correct my response ? You should have just let it go. Paranoid ... about what ? Just love the way ute fans try to paint the picture a rosy color sometimes.

Congrats to Whitt.

Trolls are in a twist over Whitt's compensation.

Added bonus.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but you and I have nobody to blame but ourselves. I know I take much more interest in who the Utes' football coach is then I do who our local high school math teachers are (I couldn't even tell you their names).

just saying Hawk what I heard on TV. The Phoenix channels are saying Kyle was just leading ASU on, and was never seriously considering them. ASU is frantic after the AD blew the June Jones negotiations. She pulled their offer last minute, when certain people (big-time donors) didn't want Jones.

I corrected your response because it was you, not me, who tried to paint a different picture. Sticking with that theme of yours, it was not me trying to make a picture more rosy, it was you who tried to deface that picture. Destroying that picture doesn't mean the event(s) never happened.
I hope you can start coping better soon, I know it's rough ... I was sitting in Rice Stadium in the late 70's and forward ... some rough times back then ... I'm still working through it.

CougFaninTX - that's like saying that Bronco's salary is paid by tithing...which isn't true. But if it were, I'd rather my taxes go to Kyle than tithing to byu football. now that's a joke.

While I do understand the point you're trying to make and share your concern, Coach Whittingham will technically be paid by the state but in actuality will be paid by ESPN, FOX Sports, Under Armour, Pac 12 bowl games ... etc, etc.
If my mother, who was a teacher, could have brought that kind of revenue to the State, I'm sure the state would've been happy to have paid her much more handsomely.

There isn't a person on this message board that wouldn't want more money for the work they do today. Who cares if Whitt played Utah against ASU, or Tennessee? They called, he listened. He told Hill what they offered, and it was Hill who ultimately made the decision to give him more money. He's now in line with his Pac12 counterparts. No big deal. Good for Whitt, and good luck for the Utes...except when they play BYU.

It was just a week ago when Ute fans were upset with the Cougar fans piling it on about basketball. True colors have come out.

Good for coach Whitt! Good man, solid coach. Well deserved.

We will never know what Bronco makes and we don't ever need to. Salaries of coaches is something kept well under the vest down in Provo. Secondly, 7 of ten is no where near as great as 6 in a row and 10 of 11...... We are slowly inching our way to 13 in a row.... It will be more impressive than the 12 straight the Utes took by one game and the fact that it spans more time in years. All the whoopty doo 12 means is that BYU didn't beat Utah for 6 straight years at two games a piece.... Yet, ya have to factor in conference tournament appearances which had existed through the years.... You can own us on the football field and we will continue to 128-125 and growing own your tukuses on the hardwood. Basketball means every bit as much to the players as football does to its. Face reality and you will be free... Hide behind the fiction of your red colored glasses and your happiness will only be a facade of inner turmoil.

Arguably we got into the PAC-12 in large part due to his coaching so considering the income going into the program it's only fair.

You are all geniuses talking about this raise being based on this season.... Coaching is a contract based salaried position. I would have to guess that this raise was more factually based on the first ten percent of his coaching career with victories over Alabama, an undefeated season and to catch up with the joneses conference wide rather than this season.. So please... All you in your little ute or cougar fantasy land wake up to the cold hard truth that this season only factored in slightly or Chris Hill is truly more a madman than a 'genius'. I will say this that I am not at all impressed with the lunacy of the 21st century.

Coach Whit has been very loyal to the Utes and was probably underpaid in the past. Great to see him get a raise and an extension.
For all those comments that he is overpaid, you should look at the market for his job position - he is basically in the middle of the coaches in the conference which is what sets market value. Are coaches over paid? Sure but so are movie stars, pro athletes, and many other positions in life.

Evidence of pure insanity. And then they have the nerve to call it "higher education." In organizations that are basically devoid of competition, politics rules. THAT'S probably the game that old Whit plays the best. Like, "I'm a dead-serious coach who's determined to get the best out of my kids every time, and I'm big-time analytical and civic-minded." Any money earned out of the programs comes from the whole investment, and I doubt you factor in the cost of facilities, support staff, etc., etc. It sure is a game, and the students and taxpayers are the ones funding it all.

Yes Whitt is in demand and Utah paid to keep him. He is a good coach.
Unfortunately BYU not in demand. No conference will take us and that is costing us more potential revenue because of our stubborn ESPN contract.

Actually, Utah athletic facilities are almost entirely paid for by donation dollars.
Athletic programs (scholarships, coaches salaries, equipment, facility overhead) are paid for by ticket sales, crimson club fees, merchandise sales, endorsements and the biggy - conference affiliated revenue.
Much of that last one will be TV dollars which is mostly due to football.
Football got Utah into the Pac 12, Whittingham coaches the football team. Other teams want Whittingham, which means...pay raise.
Yes the salaries are certainly getting crazy high, but one still has to look at what that position is worth in the entire financial scheme of things when the team is successful. Because of the huge TV contract, Pac 12 schools are now planning the return of several sport programs that never existed or were cancelled years ago, all due to the number one revenue generator in college sports...football.
This all equals... get, and try to keep, the right coach.

Happy to hear that Whit. is getting paid what he's worth! His program brings in A LOT of money into the program. Yes, it's a staggering amount of money he's getting paid, but....it's even more staggering how much Football brings in.
GO UTES & keep up the GRRRRREAT job Kyle!!!

@motorbike

Actually your assertion that donations almost entirely pay for athletic facilities is not true. utah runs a deficit and student fees are given to athletics to make up the shortfall. That means the donation dollars are being taken from day to day operations and then applied to other things. Not that I care, I really don't, but truth is truth.

Also I don't care what whittingham is paid but if the assertions that he played asu to get a raise out of utah are true then he is an absolute hypocrite. He claimed he does not care at all about the money when he took the job and also last time he got a raise. Now I personally doubt he used asu as leverage for a raise, although I also don't entirely believe him when he said he doesn't care about the money. He cares about it or else he would simply turn it down. But good for him. take it while you can get it. I would. I just wouldn't pretend I didn't care about it.
