It baffles me
When people act surprised and saddened with the consequences of their actions.

Yet not once in 21 years in the US did they attempt to do the right thing and become legal. The entire family needs to be together, in Mexico. The LDS ward is enabling them to stay here....why are they not directing them to leave? She is teaching her children to continue the lie. Our health care system delivered all 5 of those children at a cost and will continue to pay for their care.

So she decided to break up her family? Her situation is her fault. As a nurse, she should be able to make a fair living in Mexico. The country has the 12th best economy in the world, with a standard of living in the top 50.

There are a lot of people worse off around the world, many here is Utah. Women with husbands in jail or abandon are in much the same situation. Many of them don't have a church paying their expenses.

Why does the media constantly ignore the illegal part, and go straight for the sympathy? There are citizens here that are in the same situation. The are the forgotten victims of illegal immigration. I feel sorry for them, no one is their champion.

To Voice: Put yourself in their situation. Would live in an impoverished third world country where you could not earn enough to support yourself or your family or would you leave for America anyway you could. I choose America. POverty, rampant violence, and government corruption fuel illegal immigration. I have first hand experience with immigration. I spent $20,000 dollars to assist my spouse and her son immigrate from Russia. Immigration is expensive and bureaucratic. I can't imagine how an impoverished peasant living in Mexico could ever navigate such a system. The anti-immigration crowd are nothing but hypocrites. Ilegal immigration is fueled by poverty and all the laws, fences and harsh rhetoric are just bandaids. The problem will never go away until the situation changes in Mexico.

I liked this story. We should have compassion on those who find themselves in difficult circumstances. Christmas is not about things, but about love and togetherness.

Must be pretty bad in Mexico to want to leave and live without a member of your family.

The point of this article is? These folks made choices and are now having to live with the consequences. As the lady said, as difficult as life is here it is better than Mexico. Oddly enough, there are people in the world in much more difficult circumstances than those in Mexico. Unfortunately, they do not have the advantage of proximity to the United States. Instead, they have to get in line, apply for visas and wade through the bureaucratic swamp that is our system of legal immigration. I am sorry but my sympathy lies with the folks willing to suffer the pain of waiting in line.

The kids miss their father? Go join him back in Mexico. Problem solved!

If I were in her shoes, I would have crossed the border illegally too. Who would not give ANYTHING to give their family a better life? I HAPPEND to have been born in the US. She HAPPEND to be born outside of the US. Have some compassion! What would Jesus do?

Amen, Voice. I agree 100%. What is the real kicker is that they blame America for ripping apart their families, when in reality she has the opportunity to go back to Mexico and be a family together but she chose to keep her family ripped apart. So America didn't rip this family apart, them not wanting to face the consequences of breaking the law is what did it. What I feel sorry for is that desire to be together as a family wasn't as strong as their desire to have what they decided would be a better life for their kids here. Sad, indeed.

Even though her life is hard, the medical care, education and other benefits that her children have received are stolen because of her actions. Should we not be concerned for those trying to live "legally" and "honestly" in Mexico or other countries even though life may be less than her poverty stricken situation. Or maybe it would be ok if I simply stole money from Warren Buffett so that my children and grandchildren could have a better life like his family has.

None of us are responsible for the whole world but each is responsible for our own actions. Shame on her and her husband. Yes I do feel empathy for her plight but no more so than anyone else who lives in deplorable conditions. And I do give liberally of my means to assist others.

Just a quick comment to your post, NeilT:

You state that "the anti-immigration crowd are nothing but hypocrites". I'm pro-immigration, as are most of the folks that post on here. However, we're pro-immigration from a legal standpoint, not the illegal one. I'm all for people coming to America legally, as my mom did almost 48 years ago. However, this country doesn't need any more illegal immigrants. They don't come here to make America a better nation. They don't come here to salute the flag. No. They come here to live off of our system as long as they can, while still pledging allegiance to the flag of Mexico and could care less about our economy or what they're doing to it. They don't care about their families. They don't care about the laws of our land except the ones that benefit them personally. All they care about is themselves. You may not like that our immigration process cost so much and takes so long. However, this is because if we had open borders and allowed anyone in here that could get here, we'd become Mexico in a matter of days. Do you want to live in Mexico?

This article exposes the situtation that I'm sure is evident with many illegals. Our society (and in this case, their church) is enabling this family to continue to live a lie. It's a lie that has torn apart their family with no reuniting in site. While the conditions of Mexico are not ideal, I know for a fact that there are millions of people who live in Mexico, abide by the law, work for a living in professional fields (nursing), have intact families, who contribute to, and not sponge off, society and or religious institutions.

"What would Jesus do?"

I rather doubt Jesus would have entered our country illegally. He would have told this woman to obey the law and to go home to live with her husband.

If you are taking Christmas trees out of someone's garbage and wondering how you will manage financially, then is the life you are providing your children here really all that much better than what they would have in Mexico with their mother working as a nurse and their family reunited?

Lots of people here supporting the poor breaking our laws to get a head. Does it apply to Americans that are poor, or just foreign citizens.

She chose to stay here illegally over her marriage. It appears those who support her living here illegally are partly guilty for breaking up the family.

Her church made it possible for him to illegally come to the United States. Her church makes it possible for her to continue her broken family here in the US. Her church is partly responsible for this situation. It is time for her and her family to rejoin her husband in Mexico. Her church is in Mexico and it can support her there in Mexico.

Why is it that this woman would abandon her husband in Mexico? I don't think that there is anything that would keep me from being apart from my spouse. I think her priorities are misplaced. If she has a nursing certificate surely she could go back to Mexico and get a decent job there with better living conditions than what she has now.

If she and her husband came here illegally, I don't know what they expected when the police found out. It seems like the inevitable has happened. Kudos to the officer who pulled him over and took him to jail, and to ICE for deporting him. We should hear stories like this more often to discourage would be law breakers.

Pete I respect your comments My question is how do you know what motivates others. I suspect there are illegals who love this country as much as we do. I see hispanic people working at mostly service sector jobs, harvesting crops, etc. I don't know who is legal or not. I am just not convinced that being here to collect welfare is their not their primary motivation. Maybe true for a minority. That's my issue. I suspect the majority are doing what they feel is best for their family. The solution to illegal immigration is economic growth in Mexico. We don't have many illegals from Canada. That's because Canada has a stable government. I don't support illegal immigration. I continue to see it as economic, not criminal problem.

I feel that when you break the law by being here ilegally and then you want people to feel sorry for. I don't believe that way. I believe that you need to go back to Mexico and enter this country the right way. I also believe that if a church is adovacating the breaking of the laws and enabling illegals to stay in this country they should be held accountable to the justice system. I am tried of seeing my taxdollars being spent on illegals, such as foodstamp medical and giving their children a free education. I know this sound as being cold hearted but it's the way I feel and it's putting a strain on our finical systems and when they work for less they are taking job from people that are in this country the legal way.

Look at the comments of Pete in Texas, and note how they are advocating precisely National Socialist sentiments: "They come here to live off of our system as long as they can, while still pledging allegiance to the flag of Mexico," and "Do you want to live in Mexico?"

Immigration - both legal and illegal - helps the economy. See Adam Smith and Econ 101 for how markets actually work.

Restricting immigration hurts families, and hurts freedom. Those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither.
