Great Job Deseret NEws! Best job at following the high school sports in the
fender:Your moniker suggests your the fan. And if its to "recognize
individual achievement". The qb who led the state in yards and tds would
have been on the DNews team. Are you sure you are posting comments on the right
article? This is referencing the all-state process? Do you have a suggestion?
saltsportsfanI am equally sure you are wrong. If you're the fan
your moniker would suggest you would know. The kid is on the Trib's first team,
so obviously the Trib pays less attention to the coaches' lobbying efforts and
more attention to what college scouts and coaches have to say. The All State
team isn't a team distinction; it's to recognize individual achievement.
The tribune turns out the most accurate team year after year. Here is one idea
for the DNews. In my OPINION, dont let a coach vote for his own kids. The only
problem is the good ole boy syndrome, where the coach calls his buddy (other
coach) and tells him, "if you vote for my kid, I'll vote for yours".
Last year a QB with the most yards and TD's was left off the DNews team, then
was one of only two QB's selected for the Tribs team. How does this happen. Is
the Tribs process that much different. DNews you guys do a great job covering HS
sports in Utah! Figure out how to do the all-state team and give the kids the
credit they deserve (Not saying the kids now dont deserve it) any ideas from the
fans how to help out?????
fender-- Who is this outstanding offensive player you continue to talk about?
I have watched lots of games this year, I am sure that Lone Peak, Bingham,
Fremont, Logan and East and many other teams have better players. Some were
fortunate to make the All-State 1st Team, but some did not. I am certain they
are alot better than any of the Pine View players. It's not what you say you can
do...it is what you can actually do on the field that counts. Look at Pine
View's Record. Not good.
Agree with Big Rod. DNEWS actually left a kid off the first team who is ESPN
All Utah (best eleven offensive and defensive players regardless of
classification), ESPN Top 150 Watch List (top 300 juniors in the country),
ranked as top five lineman in the west by Rivals and recruited by virtually
every major program in the country. I think a little more tweaking is in order.
Its a hard thing to do and tally. There are some kids that obviously got
slighted in this process this year. I think the paper should use
common sense and also see if a boy has been slighted, fix it. For example, in
Colorado there was a Coach that had the philosophy to only nominate Seniors.
His Jr RB led the State with over 1700 rushing yards and was clearly the best RB
in the State-but since his name wasnt submitted by his Coach he was left off all
post season honors. When asked about it, the Coach stated simply "he will
have his chance his Senior Year". Just think if the Jordan QB played for
such a Coach. Trust me, it happens here. Everyone knows who the best
players are...use a mix of Coaches votes and media votes. Look at the stats,
live performances and team performance to back you up. Like mentioned work at
the Region level, then up. And if you notice a problem maybe fix it and at
least put them on the second team or honorble mention.
The selection process will always be criticized, you will never make everybody
happy. After reading the explanation article for the selection process it's not
bad, but the results still seem like a popularity contest. Some of the
selections could be sympathy votes too. The process should start from the region
level and then go up to state. A player should have to be best of region before
even being considered best of state. Somehow the selections should be more
statewide and not focused on the 4 to 5 top teams that make the headlines every
