I have no problem with the 82 game schedule. It is sure better than Baseball.
82 NBA games is far too long, 66 NBA game is long, 0 NBA games is just right.
I almost completely ignore the NBA.
66 games is more than enough.
Everything Rock said is right on but he didn't even mention the injury factor.
That alone could knock the schedule down by 20 more games to 46, a much more reasonable number.
Besides more reasonable salaries, travel costs would be cut almost in half.
I wouldn't mind if they played year-round.
Agreed a shorter season would be more relevant to fans and players.
You propose shortening the NBA season, but defend the MLB season? Idiotic. Both have too many millionaires playing a game. Both fail to sell out their stadiums. How many sold out regular season baseball games are there? NONE.
I think BOTH seasons should be cut in half, but that would mean cutting salaries in half, and you have already seen what whiners the NBA players are....
Both NBA & MLB are too long and I do watch around 5 games a year but during championship games comes around are fun time. But, during playoffs those players look so fatiqued or motivated. Just ask AK who always said getting ready to play ball at Russia and same with Memo with his Turkey. And lastly, why in the world anyone would care about basketball on Christmas Day?
The NBA is way too long, I couldn't agree more. They start playing in November and go until June, 8 months! The playoffs alone take nearly 2 months. Baseball is long, but it is April to October, 7 months and they play twice as many games! Boith seasons need to be be made shorter. Basketball is worthless until the playoffs, that is when they actually begin to play defense. The players won't give anything up, they want money and the owners are just as greedy, so it looks like this will be a 1 time thing
Leave the long season alone. quit running down a good sport. fun to see the exciting games. go watch old re runs of soap operas. funny to see non sports fans wasting our time reading how much they hate basketball. get a hobby, rock hunting, bowling etc. will be fun to see the new guys maybe become super stars and maybe a championship in little ole utah.
go jazz.
The principles involved are more important than the length of the schedule. I hope fans stay away from the games this year to send a message: players & owners should love the game and not be so greedy for millions of dollars. We can show that we can survive without basketball. We should stay way until the owners and players are more humble and less greedy.
Over Saturation. It is a negative in almost everything. We want quality at fair pricing that's all!
I disagree. Here's a novel idea, lets have a real basketball fan write basktetball news articles
@J-TX - I don't believe Rock's defending the MLB season at all. I believe he was just staying on point.
I agree that the season should be shortened. I don't believe it's necessarily true that owners would make less money. As Rock asserts, by having a shorter season, players would have less games to focus on and may actually play better, which might make fans more inclined to catch more games. And since there would be fewer opportunities, arenas might be filled closer to capacity than they currently are, especially in smaller markets like UT.
I agree with Rock on this one. A shortened season would make the game more unique and higher quality. The same is true for baseball. I am a fan of the NBA, MLB, and NFL (I have even been found watching a little NHL and UFC). But with the exception of the NFL, the current seasons are too long and should be shortened.
It is a winter sport---shouldn't go to June and there shouldn't be a summer league. One to two games a week and all players make less than $200,000. Baseball is at least outdoors on green grass under lofty skies.
It seems the way to satisfy all of us is to keep the full 82 game season for us hard core fans, and for you other milk toasts, don't turn on your tv until we get closer to the playoffs!! If you're mad at the NBA choose not to watch for as long as you like but don't try to convince the hard core fan to follow you because you want some kind of revenge. The hard core fan is glad the NBA is coming back and the more games the better (but remember, you have control of the tv remote control in your house so just tune in to Little House on the Prarie or something) :)
I can't disagree more. The NBA is made up primarily of those who feel entitled. They care about the fans as much as they care about what socks they are going to wear. This lock-out was the breaking point for me: I'll never attend a JAZZ game again. Just as with baseball: They went on strike, I never went again. Too bad more fans can't stand up to the primadonnas. What a wonderful scene it would be if no fans showed up to the home 'opener' of each venue. Players and owners might get the correct picture that it is about the fans...those in person and those watching on TV, not their stupid and petty differences. Give me College sports, of any kind, over any so called Pro league events. Take the league to 30 games, cap the salaries at $10,000 per game -- actually played (Sorry Malone)-- and make them work for a living the rest of the year.
Actually, If you got rid of the NBA, it would be fine with me.
I think an 82 game season would be fine if fewer teams qualified for the playoffs. But an 82 game season is definitely too long if over 50% of the league qualifies for the playoffs (16 out of 30). With such a long regular season and so many teams in the playoffs, the result is that the best teams don't have much to play for down the stretch in the regular season. The best teams will have already easily qualified for the playoffs. Although they do have home-court advantage to play for, playing to achieve home-court advantage doesn't add much excitement to the games.
82 games is enough time to figure out who the best 4 or 6 teams are. Upsets are pretty rare in the NBA playoffs anyways.
If 82 games were really too many, the league, fans, advertisers, TV networks, etc. don't seem to realize it. If it were a money losing prospect those entities wouldn't care to participate as early and as often as they do. Interest=money. I love the 82 game schedule.
First Rock thinks that the BYU/Utah rivalry is dead. Next, the NBA is too long. Next week Rock will write a story about neighborhood kids that are goofing around on his lawn too much.
