Great move going with the freshmen at point guard, Winder had a really nice all around game. Team looks like they are starting to gel, too much one on one in the first half but really played team ball in 2nd half.
We'll never replace Jimmer or Jax, but this looks like the deepest team the Cougs have ever had.
Winder looked especially strong at PG. He ran the offense well and played solid D. I think we found Carlino's back-up.
Harrison looked very good in the limited minutes he played. I have not seen a true Freshman look this good since Michael Smith. I'm still hoping he'll get more minutes as the season progresses.
Rogers is an offensive mis-match. He's not the most intimidating defensive player, but the kid can shoot.
Hartsock was solid just like every other night.
Abouo was an animal, even with his shorts on backwards. Was that intentional or accidental? If backwards shorts make him play like he did tonight, he needs to wear do it every night.
Even with Davies having an off night, this team proved that it is not a one man show. Every Cougar who played scored. Austin is much better than I hoped he'd be.
I'd still love to get C. Collinsworth back at 100%, but Austin and Sharp will provide solid back-up on the front court.
Hoping to see the Cougs battle Wisconsin later in the week.
I think the Winder/Harrison combo is going to be deadly coming off the bench- especially if they can maintain a high tempo with several of the starters sitting. Austin will be there to clean up any mistakes. Also, I imagine that with Carlino in command as a starter, the offense should rock.
There are two things I think the Cougars should work on though- 1. Free throws- it's been dismal this year, and even Hartsock- who is normally good- threw up a couple of bricks tonight. If they could increase their FT% as a team, they gain an edge. 13/23 is unacceptable. If the team can't hit 75%+ of their FTs, they can't close games. 2. Turnovers- Davies had 5. These could be turned into some great extra looks if he would spot the double team sooner and pass the ball back outside. He's been good at this in the past, so I imagine this will be fixed soon.
@cougfanTX, your right I was pleasantly surprised with Austin's play, looked especially good for a true big man freshman. He could prove to be a big help to the team as the season progresses. He was the only one who actually forced Carter to alter an inside shot and miss all night.
Will Collinsworth ever come back. Would love to see him add the extra body. Love what I am seeing out of Sharp...guy is tough.
I thought Longwood was a 3-A High School. Way to play teams you can beat byu.
@Capt.Smash, Longwood would crush the Utes.
Capt. Smash,
Who should Utah play? They lost to Montana State!!! I guess they should just stick with 2A and 1A, although Panguitch would be a difficult game and South Sevier would school the Utes.
@Capt Smash......Really...Your kidding right....Don't even go there!!!!
