Romney's saber-rattling is profoundly troubling. Iran is not Iraq--it's got
plenty of money, a huge armed force, and singleminded fanaticism. A war with
Iran would truly devastate us.
Attacking Iran would be foolish.
The question is not one of financial affordability as much as one of morality.
How is it we survived the notorious "red scare" during the Cold War
period without one incident of nuclear warfare or terrorism? Why is it we give
in to the fear that the latest threat is the incarnation of an irrational Hitler
who must be stopped at all costs? Are we really willing to send off more of our
own to their deaths for a fear that probably will never materialize? Is it
really a wise strategy to provoke yet more anti-American sentiment around the
world? At one time, America was a model of restraint and judiciousness, but now
exemplifies excess and knee-jerk reactions to imagined scenarios. If that's what
Americans want more of, Romney/Gingrich/Cain/ Bachmann/Santorum/Perry/Obama will
grant their wish. Ron Paul offers the only true alternative to a Republican
party bereft of vision.
