With a win today, the Pac 12 chamionship game and Rose Bowl are very much in
play because UCLA beat ASU last week!Get er done Utes!
Very much in play is not a phrase I would use to describe "Utah wins out
and Arizona State loses out as well as UCLA dropping another game after this one
assuming this one even ends in a Utah win". we're not going to the PAC-12
championship or the Rose Bowl. What we are going to get is a utah team that
despite not having Wynn will most likely have either a 4-5 or 5-4 conference
record at the end of the season. That seems good enough.
@Lifelong UteUh...yeah. The New Mexico bowl is probably more at
play for Utah at this point than the Rose Bowl.
The snow should be a big advantage for Utah against the coastal UCLA though UCLA
relies more on the run so they might not be as harmed by it as they would be
Alt, asu would not have to lose out because since ucla has tiebreaker over asu
and we will have it over ucla. I don't know how tiebreaker is settled but we
just need asu to lose two of three. Utah vs oregon for first ever pac 12
championship! Go utes!
@Lifelong Ute"With a win today, the Pac 12 chamionship game and Rose
Bowl are very much in play."Good one! You had me rolling, I
was laughing so hard. For a minute, I thought you were serious. You're either
joking, or your real name is Jake Heaps and you've already decided to transfer
to the TUN.The only conference games U will win are Arizona, Oregon
State and Colorado is a 50/50. Those three schools would finish in the bottom
half of the MWC.
Good call by the refs, head to head contact, watch the replay Utesies, his head
hits the other players face mask. Head to head. You tell us Byu fans not to
whine about refs.
@jarka-rusWow really? Initial contact was shoulder to midsection recievers
face mask hits back of defenders helmet. If there was a penalty it would of been
hitting defenseless player.
Bet you feel dumb^ No flag!! Clean play by my boy ROWE!!!
Cougfan, game over. Utah wins! Roses are possible!
Defense is strong, John White IV is a stud, and Hays is adequate. Let's finish
this one off Utes! This is starting to get fun.
Cougfan ... A little ironic that you are on here criticizing Utah's strength
of schedule. Shouldn't you be tuning in to the kickoff between they y and the
Idaho School of Nursing ??
Pick 6. Wonder if Bruins fold like cheap lawn chairs and Cougars.
@1994"Uh...yeah. The New Mexico bowl is probably more at play
for Utah at this point than the Rose Bowl".Uh...There are not
enough teams in the Pac-12 that are bowl eligible for a team to qualify for the
New Mexico Bowl. I know you would like to see us there. But, the Sun Bowl or the
Las Vegas Bowls are the most likely destinations for the Utes. Not bad for our
first year in the Pac-12. Go Utes!
Good Game Utes! Lovin the PAC 12 schedule, keeps it interesting every week!
Lets go fight for the PAC 12 south title!
Congratulations to the Utes on a good win against UCLA. They've had much to
deal with this season, but have stayed focus. Good job by the coaching staff to
help the team adjust to the many challenges that have arisen. Go Utes!
Wow, could be Las Vegas against TCU or Boise, hopefully Boise for a repeat. It's
shaping up for another beat down. That would be funny.Hays is
improving, happy for the kid living his dream as D1 QB.
Good win by the Utes. Hayes looks better when he plays within himself and
doesn't try to do too much. Handing the ball to John White 30+ times helps too.
Utah oregon pac 12 championship. Mark it down! Asu is going down tonight! Go
Wow how bad is Arizona? getting worked by the Buffs. Yep Utes schedule is tough.
phew. Wazzzoooo the next powerhouse. UCLA is pathetic, 50 penalties, they only
have one maybe two plays in their playbook. Roll out or read option dive. Fluke
win over ASU.
Way to go!
Utes, Your team played great today. The QB and the offense are developing well.
Your strength remains the defense. It is ourstanding to hold any of the PAC
teams to six points. I hope your team keeps improving.Go Cougs!
@sammyg | 7:45 p.m. Nov. 12, 2011Too bad BYU can't make it to Vegas.
I another beat down by the Utes and you go back into your fetal position until
Spring ball.Utah's defense is legit. Even with a D2 QB throwing for
67 yards we dominated. The probability of finishing 8-4 and a Sun
Bowl game against Florida State/Virgina/Georgia Tech looks achievable. Go UTES!!
Lifelong: Let me know if you need a place to stay when you go to
the championship game at the Rose Bowl, because you won't be able to find a room
in Pasadena when the ASU crowd starts booking hotels. Also, plan on renting a
car because I'm not driving you to Pasadena to see the Sun Devils. The Rose Bowl is only "very much in play" if ASU loses tonight to
WSU and then loses to U of A, who got clobbered by CU - I repeat, CU! The Cal-ASU game will be a contest if Cottonwood's Sofele has the kind of game
in Tempe that he had today in Berkeley (190 yards on 23 carries - how did we not
save a scholarship for him?). If they beat WSU and U of A and lose to Cal their
record will be 6-3.Let's see what happens in Pullman tonight.
"...Bruins' first visit to Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday as a member of the
same conference."Member of the same conference. Man, I love
the sound of that!!Outstanding job, Utes! We are settling in to our
new role just fine.Congratulations to our outstanding coaching
congrats to the utes!
Lifelong: Chris B will drive you to the Rose Bowl because he's marked it down.
Nice win Utes!Once again White was the man. Did you see Langi come
alive on a few plays though? Hays played well and the D just blasted the boys in
baby blue. With who remains, the Utes will finish 8-4. Not a great
year but good and something to build on.Way to go Utes!
A strong finish will put the Utes at 8-4 including the 54-10 beat down of little
@jarka-rusNothing funnier than Y "fans" knocking our Pac12
schedule while your team is playing the Idaho School of Cosmetology.
nicely done being bowl eligible again Utes. Now if my Cougars could do
likewise without having to beat teams like the Sisters of Saint Mary (sorry
Idaho fans, no disrespect directly intended)... I would feel better. I am
sitting here watching them play yet another team with a loosing record -
speaking of the Y. Really, can't we schedule some better teams.
If the Y wants to be the Notre Dame of the West, please schedule games like the
Irish do. Idaho is great for homecoming, senior day... but really.... enough
Idaho style teams on the Y's schedule.Good win Utes - now lets have
two quality programs in the state.
Is there anything John White IV can't do? White gets the rock over
30 times again, rushes for 170+ yards again, scores 3 TDs (two rushing and one
receiving), catches the ball, picks up blitzes, and is durable as anyone in
college football.White is a special player, a once in a blue moon
player, and the college version of Matt Forte.
Nice game. UCLA didn't quit when they got down, unlike some teams down south.
Great game, Utes! White is a beast, and the Utes' defense is as strong as any
in the country. Not sure why there are several BYU fans talking trash
after our victory over UCLA. After losing to the only three good teams on your
schedule, you guys are building your W's off high school-level competition.Just remember, concerning you guys and us, 54-10 is all that matters.
@PAC 12 loves U"There are not enough teams in the Pac-12 that
are bowl eligible for a team to qualify for the New Mexico Bowl."Well that's in MY face isn't it?!"Our conference is so weak
this year, we can't fulfill all our bowl connections."My only
point, PAC 12 loves U, is that Lifelong Ute is up in the clouds about the Rose
Bowl. Utah is doing well against the lower tier of the Pac 12. (Which they
should.) They are beating the teams they are supposed to beat and hats off to
Kyle Whitingham for managing to put together a decent season in spite of a lot
of bad breaks. But that said, Utah is not a Rose Bowl caliber team this year.
Frankly, nobody in the south division really is.
Now lifelong Ute gets to serve up roses.
@jarka runsYou say UCLA is pathetic? Utah only beat them by 25
points...I don't even wanna know what you would say about a team that lost to
Utah by 44 points!
Nice Win!====jarka-rus: "Wow how bad is Arizona? getting
worked by the Buffs. Yep Utes schedule is tough."Hahaha. First
came the predictions by the trolls that Utah would be a cellar dwellar, then
came the predictions that they would get worked by Arizona and UCLA. What's left
after the Utes 3 game win streak?...strength of schedule smack. That is not a
place Y fans want to go....====CougFaninTX:"Good
one! You had me rolling, I was laughing so hard...The only conference games U
will win are Arizona, Oregon State and Colorado is a 50/50. Those three schools
would finish in the bottom half of the MWC."===CougFan,
you've spent too much time laughing and too little time making predictions based
on facts. Last night you told us to "Mark it Down!!" (your prediction
of UCLA 31, Utah 13). Other glorious predictions included BYU samacking the U,
Utah going 6-6 and 50/50 against Washington St. Now, you're changing it to 50/50
v Colorado? No question, marking down Chris B's predictions have
been more fruitful to me than marking down yours.Forgive me if I
leave my pencil alone for your next prediction....
@majmajorYou are in Utah. Your almost there. You can say we instead of
you. You can cheer for more than one team. Utah's win has not affect on the
position of your other team. Cheering for more than one team is twice the fun.
Thanks for the post.
This was not UCLA's first visit to Rice-Eccles Stadium. There was a similar
(ok, more impressive) result on 15 September 2007, when No. 11 UCLA was crushed
44-6, with a number of Utah freshmen getting huge honors.Congratulations, Utes. Good luck the next two weeks with Washington State and
Utah should go 8-4, if they do that wont be a bad season at all for their first
season in the pac 12, especially since they lost their QB so early, and their
current QB only needs 50 yards a game and no TOs to win.
GoRed:There aren't BYU fans talking trash, but there are Utah alums
(like me) taking issue with homers like Lifelong and Chris B who are spouting
like the Y fans they're so critical of for "marking down" impossible
achievements. Let's get real - we're not going to the Rose Bowl
this year unless we win out (realistic) and ASU loses out (unrealistic). If we
are tied with ASU we're still not going to the Rose Bowl because ASU owns a tie
breaker over us. If ASU, the U, and UCLA are tied, ASU goes based on the PAC-12
rules for breaking a three-way tie. The fact that we beat UCLA, who beat ASU,
who beat us doesn't mean we go over ASU; the tie will be broken based on who has
the highest BCS ranking and best overall record (that would be ASU). We had a good win tonight, and the team can now focus on WSU - another team we
should beat. I'm excited that we can finish with a good win streak. Let's quit
talking Rose Bowl in the same manner Jake talked national championship. In
other words, let's not be stupid; it's ASU v. Oregon.
Idaho is a way better team than either utah or Ucla bruin are. this means byu is
@sammygWhat is really funny is BYU's November. You got to laugh at
the Little Debbie Powder Puff league featuring a rematch with BYE. The season
ticket holders sure got their money's worth. The 54-10 thrashing by the Utes was
also hilarious. Yes indeed you have quite the comedy club there at LES. I think
you're on to something. If you can't win and/or schedule big games, just make
'em laugh instead.
@ A1994"My only point, PAC 12 loves U, is that Lifelong Ute is
up in the clouds about the Rose Bowl. Utah is doing well against the lower tier
of the Pac 12. (Which they should.) They are beating the teams they are supposed
to beat and hats off to Kyle Whitingham for managing to put together a decent
season in spite of a lot of bad breaks. But that said, Utah is not a Rose Bowl
caliber team this year. Frankly, nobody in the south division really
is."I'll be a realistic U fan. Utah won't be playing in the
Rose Bowl this year. Statistically it's possible, but the odds are against us.
Utah is no doubt a middle of the PAC team this year. But,Utah has a great
defense to hang with any of the Pac-12 teams. They just need to get the offense
up there. I see Utah will be contenders in the next few years with good recruits
coming in. Otherwise, I do agree with you A1994. Utah played great tonight!
A1994"Our conference is so weak this year, we can't fulfill all our
bowl connections."Perhaps it is because Oregon is going to the
BCS National Championship pushing all the other teams up a bowl. With two teams
in BCS bowls; Utah could be bumped up to the Sun Bowl or even Holiday Bowl; if
WA State wins tonight and USC wins out.
I can't help but wonder how badly UCLA would blow out BYU...
A1994 "Well that's in MY face isn't it?! 'Our conference is so weak
this year, we can't fulfill all our bowl connections.'====You would
be unwise to quote some of the posters on here and then call it fact. The Pac-12 has 7 bowl tie ins, not including if Stanford made it to a BCS game
as an at-large.Currently there are 6 bowl eligible teams, which of
course does not include 8-2 USC who is on probabtion. If UCLA manages to win one
of their last two (Colorado or USC) they will also be bowl eligible. Having 7
bowl eligible teams, plus another that is quite good but can't go bowling,
doesn't make the PAC-12 a "weak" conference. This is one
Ute fan who is aware that only a miracle will see the Utes in the PAC-12
championship game, so I'm not holding my breath.-Rose (Big-Ten):
Oregon v Michigan St.-Holiday (Big-XII): ASU v Baylor -Alamo

Came home following another UTAH WIN to watch the Oregon - Stanford game - Oh
how I love this conference!!!!!! GO UTES!!!!
GoRed;Good comment except; if Utah, ASU, and UCLA tie in the conference,
ASU does not have the better record since they lost to Illinois and Utah won
their non-conference games including Pitt. However, if Utah wins out they will
have to win by big margins to get the highest BCS ranking.

nothing funnier than Y fans making fun of Utah while their team as of today:1. Were dragged to the woodshed and pummeled by the Utes2. Have
a SOS #85 (Utah SOS #27) 3. BYU team is 2-8 vs teams above .500 in last

K, just to clarify on the the tiebreaking rule that some people have partially
right:If there is a three-way conference tie, the team with the worst BCS
ranking is knocked out. Then, whichever of the two won the head to head is
declared the winner.e.g. Threeway tie between us, ASU, and UCLA where us
and ASU have the higher rankings. UCLA is out, then we follow since ASU won the
head to head. For us to get to the Rose Bowl (unlikely, but possible), we'd
have to win both games and end up 8-4(5-4), ASU would have to lose at least two
of their last three games (possible, not probable, and UCLA would have to lose
at least one of their last two games (likely to happen against USC and maybe
even CU). Honestly, as a Ute, I feel that we don't deserve to be in the
South Championship with 4 conference losses. That said, I have no complaints
taking what is rightfully USC's and making the most of the opportunity. GO UTES!
@ Mike Johnson"This was not UCLA's first visit to Rice-Eccles

Tie Breaking Procedure from the PAC-12 Web site:Three or More

79ute, you are wrong. If we lose out and asu loses a couple our Bcs
ranking will be the highest.
Regarding the highest BCS ranking; UCLA has losses with Houston and Texas. So,
they will likely be the team eliminated in the tie. AZ State then trumps Utah.
Congratulations Utah!Nice thump down on UCLA. You've had a tough
season with Wynn getting hurt. I love to see your team overcoming that. Kyle is
a great coach!
Nice photos Tom. I liked the variety of players shown. Super photos too on other
SL newspaper site.
Lifelong:I said ASU would have the best overall record. Who knows
where the BCS standings will end up? I don't and you don't, either. However,
we know from the simple arithmetic that ASU will have a better record.
ASU and UCLA lose and Utah wins. Go Cal, Go USC, Go Utah! Things could get
79 but how you end is much more important than how you start. Asu just lost.
Asu will lose at least one more and we are playing oregon for rose bowl! You
heard it here first. Utah oregon first ever pac12 title!!
Hmmm. ASU just went down to WSU. We are only 1 game out!
Our defense can stop oregon!
@Lifelong If ASU beats Arizona they would have the tie-breaker in a
threee-way tie with Utah and UCLA (record within the division) and in a two-way
tie with Utah. (Head-to-head). If ASU loses to AZ but beats Cal, they would
still have the tie-breaker in a three-way tie (best record against the next-best
team, which is USC).Utah needs to win out, and have ASU lose out and
have UCLA lose one.
Congratulations to the Utes on being bowl eligible. Enjoy the sun and warmth of
Lifelong: Well, ASU lost one I didn't think they'd lose - I admit it. Just as
UCLA won last week and our defense shut them down this week, I think our defense
can stop WSU next week. The entire defense played well today. Credit both the
players and the coaches!
Congrats Utes. One of my favorite things to do in my football world besides
seing the cougs play is to watch slick Rick get outcoached. I am sure Norm Chow
is above this, but to beat another former employer this week must taste good.
Good luck next week against the Buffs.
ASU is once again a head case. I love the Devils but they seriously need a
session. At this point, the U may just win the south if the devils keep this
up. Unbelievable that this is the same ASU team that thumped the Trojans, Utes,
Beavers, and Cal.
Good luck against WSU rather.
Utah played a dismal UCLA team........I wouldn't get your BCS bowl dreams to
Utes looked solid in this win.I am ashamed of some of my Cougar
brethren presuming to talk smack to the Utes. There can be no
argument that the Utes' win in RES last night was much more impressive than our
scrimmage against a JC in LES.And there can be no argument that the
Utes' 54-10 victory earlier this season was more impressive than our 10-54 loss
on the same night - right here in our own house! But then, humility
was never a characteristic of BYU Cougars. Funny how that works.
"@majmajor, You are in Utah. Your almost there. You can say we instead of

I love evaluating teamwork. Growing up in the South-Eastern U.S. the

you for supporting a certain team, but you would lose all respect if you claimed
Alabama as YOUR team one year, and Auburn the next. It was ok to switch teams,
but the cause had to be for basic character reasons. I.e. While
growing up, I was a Dallas Cowboys fan. When the unprofessional, cowardly, and

To Lifelong Ute ... Did you really type " Our defense can stop Oregon
" ?? I appreciate that you're a fan , but statements like this make you
look ridiculous. Did you watch Stanford / Oregon ?? Oregon is not Arizona
and is not UCLA. If Cal can put up 30 + on the Ute defense, the Ducks would
put close to 50 on the board. IMO
Looks like Utah is still in the hunt for the Rose Bowl! (unlikely but looking
more and more possible each week!) Go get em next week Utes! ASU is falling
apart before our very eyes
Red Hot? Really???UCLA is 5-5. Big deal. That's like beating the
second best team in Idaho.
Conference play just got interesting!!!@eastcoastcoug Do some
research, then try posting an informed opinion.Homework for you,
which team have you beat since SDSU last year that is 5-5 or better?
Just when you think we have only two games left against the weakest of the
Pac-12 teams left, they both go out and upset teams out of Arizona.
@AZguy"ASU is once again a head case. I love the Devils but they

I really want ASU to beat Oregon in the championship game. (People here talking
like Utah might go - not going to happen.) Hopefully ASU can pull things
together assuming they make it to the championship game (I think they will) and
give Oregon a real scare at least.Anyway, I am glad to see the Utes
back on track! GO UTES!!!
Congrats Utah over UCLA. It was a good win. You could see Chow's influence in
that game. Defense, as expected played tough. FYI, LA Times
considers this UCLA defeat to be a great disgrace at the hands of a "second
rate team" (T J Simers). It will be the end of Neuheisel at UCLA. Good job,
I just need it to be made crystal clear in potato head language to any up in the
clouds Ute fans that the championship game is in Oregon since they will have won
the north and essentially the conference... The championship game on December
2nd is only a mere technicality. Is it not true that barring a fold Oregon would
go to a BCS game of more significance than the over hyped rose bowl? Would not
STanford get that nudge since they have the second best record in the
conference? I love how the conference championship game has no bearing on the
bowl bids. Even if the Utes do get there by the luck of late season melt downs
they will NOT win it! Their hopes are in Texas or Nevada... Bowls of the Sun or
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Oregon will NOT be in the championship game
unless there is a huge unexpected melt down at Oklahoma State.... What will
happen is it will be A) LSU v Ok St U or B) LSU v Alabama for a rematch.... A
rematch which has this interesting side note... The road team has won how many
of the past x amount of games between the two teams?
Idaho could have beat both Arizona and UCLA. Go ahead and gloat, though.
Tom ... 54 - 10. Can I gloat now ??
Tom in CA, how dellusional you have become. Your beloved Cougs couldn't even be
a bottem feeder like Idaho by more that the Utes beat (down) your beloved
kittens. ULCA and AZ would beat BYU no doubt as BYU can't beat any BCS team
unless it is hapless Ole Miss who is the absolute worst team in the SEC (by one
point). That's the sad (for you) world we live in now Tom, your team plays the
likes of Idaho and mine plays ULCA, USC et. al.. Your desperate concotions just
add amusment to it all.
Tom in CA, no matter what you say or how many WAC teams the Cougars beat the
score is still 54-10
Dang! I'd have to say the Utes looked pretty good Saturday, and yes, if they
are hitting their stride, they could make the Rose Bowl. Coug fan here, saying

williary,Nice analysis using the Sagarin Rankings. You
probably already know this, but the BCS formula already takes SOS into
consideration, on a week-by-week basis, re-computing SOS in light of new wins
and losses. It also includes in its formula the Harris, Coaches,
Sagarin, Colley, Anderson-Hester, Billingley, Massey, & Wolfe rankings and
polls. So, I like your analysis, and I think it is correct. But the BCS rankings have BYU at #37 and Utah at #39.I'm not
convinced BYU is the better team, of course. The 54-10 spanking we got outweighs
all the polls and rankings in the universe. But I'm just sayin'...
Honor Code,No BCS bowl this year, but playing in a league that is

dreams have a much better chance of coming true in the next few years than
Y ask Y,I looked all over the internet and couldn't find a BCS
ranking that goes below 25. So where did you get your ranking for BYU and Utah?
I think I know. The USA Today Coaches poll has BYU and Utah about where you
said the BCS has us. Guess what, the Coaches poll is pure opinion and has
nothing to do with SOS. Any ranking taking into account SOS has Utah above BYU.
@Y ask YI believe BCS rankings only go to #25. Like the poster
above pointed out, you're seeing the "Others Receiving Votes" section
of the Coaches poll. BYU had 4 votes, Utah had 2.Sagarin Rankings
are completely computer based. Just straight facts, no opinions.
