The first BYU team I watched featured a kid named Danny Ainge. When he left, the team struggled for a bit, then found their legs and finished strong. The same will happen this year.

Without Carlino, and without an experienced backcourt, BYU is going to struggle early. Even at that, they should head into conference play at 12-2 but probably no worse than 11-3.

My guess is that they lose on the road to St. Mary's, Gonzaga and one other, plus lose to Va. Tech in Blacksburg.

That would be a record of 23-6. Add two wins in the tournament and the team heads into the NCAA's at 25-7. That'll probably be a 9th seed and a 50/50 chance for a first-round win.

With respect to Utah State, who has been amazing under Big Stew, they are great in the regular season but suffer in the tournament. At least BYU has finally broken free of that one-and-done tourney history.

"Notice how the USU fans didn't rush the court after the win."

Notice how BYU fans didn't rush the court after their win last year. Also, notice how every single fan rushed the field when USU beat BYU in football (not anywhere close to all the fans rushed the field when BYU won this year).

"Now off to play in some high school gyms and the year is complete."

I'd rather see college teams play in high school gyms than see high school teams play in empty college bball arenas like the Huntsman Center.

Great day today for the football fans in Utah. Weber, Utah State, Utah, BYU, Wyoming and TCU all won.

fans are fans. But I can guarantee there weren't any classless, childish, and uncalled for messages on our scoreboard/jumbotron after the game.

Great win I hope the fans didn't live up to their reputation and treated the opposing fans with a little respect. Knowing how the fans are I really doubt it though.

@IndeMak Maybe the Aggie defense could get some credit for the drought rather than BYU simply not making a shot.

"Hartsock said of that scoring drought. "Credit to them. They played good defense."

    Reading is fundamental, IndeMak

    @gored (oops, I meant GoRed)

Didn't sound like riddleme was obsessing, it. sounded like he was dishing on your team. Of course you don't realize its dishing one theme because that's what you hear each game from the 4 or 5 thousand ute fans at the Huntsman yelling at their own abysmal team.

Speaking of obsessing, its a bit hypocritical for a ute troll cruising a BYU article to accuse someone else of being obsessed. I would think that the beam in your eye would make it hard to see the splinter in his eye...

Congrats to Utah State. I grew up in Brigham City and love Utah State and graduated from BYU. I love the Spectrum and the tremendous fan support USU gets. Too bad there are low class fans on both sides of the fan bases that ruin it for all. The signs and chiding of Davies was classless and completely uncalled for. Thank heavens the majority of Utah State fans have class..same on the BYU side. I hope both schools have a great season.

The great that about USU basketball is that it is such a premier defensive program. USU consistently holds all of its opponents to points below their season averages. Many fans fail to see this important point. Good defense creates turnovers, lower shooting percentages, and lower points overall. Teams don't just shoot poorly and experience a lot of turnovers. This is all caused by defense.

As such, this game will likely be one of BYU's top three lowest scoring games of its season as it will be with other teams.

Aggies fans have the right to talk BB smack. But I'm amazed that Utes fans would even dare to open their mouth about BB.

When was the last time U beat the Aggies in the Spectrum? Who was afraid to schedule the Aggies, and instead scheduled games against Montana State and San Diego Christian? Who lost to Div II Adams State?

And for those of U taking shots at the WCC, how'd your ranked UCLA Bruins do against Loyola Marymount?

Congrats Aggies. I'm sure you'll have another 25+ win season. Utes could have 25+ losses this season. It's a much better year to be blue than red.

Not much to cheer for from your football team, sorry bout that. We know Aggie world revolves around Stew and b-ball. Just keep the two in perspective if ya can.

B.Y.U will be fine. The Spectrum is a hard place to win at just like the Marriott Center. Many good teams are afraid to play B.Y.U. at the Marriott Center because they know how hard it is to win there so they schedule games at neutral courts. (just ask Arizona) Rose is such a good coach that B.Y.U. basketball is never re-building they are re-loading. It will be a while before Utah has the talent to beat B.Y.U. Without Jimmer it is time for other's to step up and that will happen.

Nice win. Congrats to Stew and the farm boyz. There's no place to play quite like the DGS Spectrum.

USU's defense and ability to break the press were keys to the win, imo. It was an impressive performance with so many freshman, redshirts and JC transfers playing. Credit to Coach Morrill for bringing it all together against a quality opponent so early in the season.

There was no mention of the Utes in John...Schmidt's post, yet you are the one to bring up the Utes. Can't seem to get away from obsessing on them, can you? You ought to stay on the subject, the BYU loss to USU.

So what's the capstone project for the Utes this year, after losing to Adams State?

5th losing season 7 years, more transfers?

It's interesting to see the reaction of some to a BYU loss to USU. This Aggie win shouldn't come as a surprise. USU USUALLY beats BYU in basketball. In the last 10 years, they are 7-4 against BYU.

I am not giving up on the Cougs. The Spectrum is a tough place to play and USU would rather beat BYU than win a NC. But . . . I hope Carlino is good because Zylstra cannot play point against decent teams. And Davies must play better. Did not we all think Collinsworth and Harrison were players? Where were they? So, tough place to play, first game, 20 turnovers, could not make 3's and missed a lot of free throws. A lot to fix, but there is time. Given Rose's track record, my bet is that we succeed.

And where do ute fans get off commenting on BYU basketball? The height of hypocrisy! Lone Peak could beat the u this year.

Is it just me or is everyone giving up on BYU after just one loss? We got spoiled last year losing only 4 times. USU is a good team that doesn't lose often at home. It is not going to be easy to take one from them up there. The cougs will be just fine. The spectrum isn't the easiest place to begin your season unless you are USU!

Nice win Ags. That said your inexperience really raised it's ugly head in the latter stages of the game. You had better learn how to close out games soon or you will be on the losing end. First, why do kids in college after 10-12 years of organized basketball shoot so poorly from the foul line and especially at the end of games. Missing the front end of one and ones will get you soon if that isn't changed, but practice hard and hopefully that will change! Fun game to watch.

Congrats to USU. In typical Aggie fashion, they excelled in the Spectrum. BYU certainly needs to rediscover how to finish without The Jimmer. It will be interested as the season progresses who is more successful ... USU figuring out how to win big games away from the Spectrum ... or BYU figuring out who are their go-to guy(s) to end a drought or close a game.

As a Cougar fan, I'm hopeful that Coach Rose will help them figure it out. Go Cougs!!

"We turned the ball over 20 times. That's something we need to get better at," he (Dave Rose) said.

I hope they don't get better at turning the ball over in the same way I got better at "talking while the teacher was out of the room." When I was in the 5th grade I actually got an A on my report card one term under that item. So the next term I talked more and my grade dropped to a C. I guess the teacher really did have a few snitches in the room. Stuck up girls anyway. So, hopefully the Cougar turnovers will be fewer, far fewer. Man I missed Fredette last night.

BYU basketball will fit in nicely with the Big West, they wouldn't last in the MWC this year. Thank goodness for those ESPN contracts and the talk of the Big East merge! As they say in this world, some people take 5 steps forward and 20 steps backwards..........
