"I can tell you unequivocally that the Obama
administration is not taxing Christmas trees. What's being talked about here is
an industry group deciding to impose fees on itself to fund a promotional
campaign, similar to how the dairy producers have created the 'Got Milk?'
campaign," he said. "That said, USDA is going to delay implementation
and revisit this action."
The new program was set to go into
effect Wednesday. According to the Agriculture Department announcement, the
government would have imposed a 15-cent-per-tree charge on "producers and
importers" of fresh Christmas trees, provided they sell or import more than
500 trees a year.
The program and fee were supported by some in the
Christmas tree industry. The money was not meant to pay down the debt or fund
any other program, but designed to go back into the new Christmas Tree Promotion
Board.
So Obama's only action here was to STOP the tax. Nice spin
trying to say he started it. Don't be liars.
Private industry doesn't need government to tax producers in order to promote
their product. That is for the private sector to handle. This so-called
"tax" is another example of government trying to take over a private
sector functions.
Not a big deal on this kind of tax. I think that everyone should quit cutting
trees down. Its a big waste to see all of the trees cut and no one buys them. We
need trees. Buy artificial. BEsides, Obama veto on this should have kept this
frombeing published.
This tax just shows what is wrong with America. Why is milk taxing us to
promote itself, when it is subsidize by us the taxpayer to stay in business?
It's simple supply and demand, you'd think a green government would be worried
about the harmful hormone milk that we are feeding to our children. Many of the
nutrients have to be added to the milk.
Our reality is truely stranger than fiction!! lets legalize pot so we all can
read these stories of the ridiculous in a green fuzzy haze, then we can just
look at each other and say 'dude!'.. yeah 'dude'
Our forests are dying from under-harvest of trees and the environmentalists
won't allow reasonable timber harvest. Also the dramatic drop of people
connecting with the outdoors is contributing to less harvest. The Tribune had a
wonderfully over analyzed article on our dying forests a couple of weeks ago. It
made the author a bunch of money by the column inch printed. The bottom line for
justifying tree harvest is fire and disease. So to sum up the article:
fuel+oxygen+ignition=fire and overgrowth=competition+stress+disease. That's the
way nature works. You can manage it or you can use natures way of managing by
catastrophe.
"The Christmas tree promotion will be the first to push one type of product
fresh-cut trees over another. It would be like pushing 2 percent milk over 1
percent."
No, it would be like pushing Milk over Orange Juice.
(Unless both are federally subsidized....)
Obama....this TAX and SPEND POTUS is a disaster.......This guy never saw a tax
hike he didn't like! Christmas tax to pay for his new agency is just more big
government, from this BIG Government Idiot! Send this guy back to the Chicago
Ghettos community organizing and his old salary of $12k per year!

which wreaks havoc on the environment.
I know Manti doesn't have very
many "Christmas"-type trees, so please let me also explain that
the Christmas tree industry farms trees.
The ones you are talking
about in the forest are 20-180 feet tall. I don't know many houses with
ceiling that tall.
And for $5-$10 you can go to a U.S. Forest Service
office and get a tree-cutting permit and pick out just about any
"perfect" tree you'd like within the set guidlines.
By all
means...please, do it.
FYI - Our family usually gets a live tree each
year. Potted, not cut. And we plant them in our Utah desert yard to
enjoy for many years to come. I really like showing the grandkids the tree
their daddy got his first bike under.
I find it humorous that you all keep posting nonsense about this being Obamas
fault (despite the fact he vetoed the measure) and totally ignoring screwdriver
and lanes refutation of the claims being made by evens. I guess when the truth
gets in the way you all just choose to ignore it.
Isn't it ironic that when the shoe is on the other foot, all the
"libs" do the same thing. They ignore the truth and just keep bashing
away with their obnoxious posts.
Sounds like a congressional issue not the president's. Only Congress has the power to tax. So which senators voted for this tax?

I knew yesterday that Obama vetoed this idea. Why did the DN publish this today? Don't they keep up with the news?
What gives DN?

I look it this way Utah.
Christmas tree tax puts GOP Congress in a strange place.
Or does it now?.
"Always keep Christ in Christmas."
You can't tax that.
A Christmas Tree, one can't eat, it's not about Jesus Christ, so tax it to death then.
Get over it Utah.
Stop the whines.
Like you love to do on these taxes.
Tobacco tax puts Utah in a strange place?.
Alcohol tax puts Utah in a strange place?.
For all those that "smoke and drink" in Utah that is.
Let's tax Christmas Trees then, by the inch, from the tip if the tap root, to the tip of the tree.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Yep,
It proves what I thought a while ago that posters do not register what they read unless it agrees with their preconceived notions.
Read: Obama vetoed this idea. Yes, I said Obama nixed this.
Now, begin raving and ranting about how horrible this president is and how he just wants to tax and spend. Ready, set, go....
