BYU basketball: Cougars get a scare from Dixie State

This is scary, I expect alot more out of this BYU team than what I am seeing... Time for the Seniors to step up and perform and to challenge the younger players to carry their own weight...

We have a very good front line that will help us in rebounds and post defense... But College Basketball is a Guard's game.... Teams in the NCAA will go nowhere unless they have a solid guard line and we are hurting there.... We need a solid triple threat guy on the Guard Line. Someone that is quick enough to get to the rim and either finish or find the open shooter... We don't have that...

We are solid at the #3, the #4, and even at the #5 (for a change).... We are even decent at the #2 (not great but decent as we could use more quickness here on defense).... But we simply have nothing at the #1.... December 17th can't get here too fast when we will get Carlino but in the interim we need the back up guys to work on their quickness on defense, and work on being a little more effective on penetration opportunities.

Regardless as to how good or bad BYU is, look for Dixie to return to the Sweet 16 of the Div II tournament. This year they could win it all.

They were relatively uncontested shots. Had BYU played good defense that percentage would and should have been lower.

VAggie, You obviously didn't get what I was saying, last night DSC shot lights out (a given night). I will lay money USU will not hit 60% of their 3's against BYU.

Funny to read all the negativity from a bunch of people who don't get it... Who cares that it was a close game... better than watching a blow out... and it was better prep for USU than a blow out. Butler and Arizona (better programs than byu) both lost to Div II teams in exhibition. BYU needs Rogers and Charles to give consistent positive efforts on both ends of the floor (defending, not shooting bad shots). Davies is an animal in the post, Hartsock has even learned some post moves. Zylstra ran the show perfectly, the only problem was when he needed a quick sub as Cusick got beat on the drive and turned it over and gave up a 7pt lead in 2 minutes. BYU's defense needs to improve (considering Rogers doesn't defend at all, nor other subs apparently could defend) but also consider Dixie was shooting out of their minds. Dixie might shoot that well in maybe 3 more games all season... Cougs will do fine at Utah State

Cut out the nonsense? All right. (As Frank Layden so aply says.) The point is BYU is going to have a long season. The WCC will expose them for what they are; a vulnerable team, undersized, undermanned and looking for talented players. If an ordinary Utah State Aggie team gives them trouble the next game in Logan, then mark my words. Hey, and I'm a BYU fan when I say these things. Seriously, a major college team; where are the seven footers and 6'10" guys at forward and 6'5" plus in the backcourt? I know you have to be optimistic, but come on people. The jury is out. Dixie State huh. Right.

Let's cut out the nonsense. If Rose had played his five starters the whole game like normal, it would have been a blow out. A lot of the BYU bench warmers got valuable minutes, and that is the biggest reason the game stayed close. In the final two minutes, when the big dogs came back in the game, you saw how they put up about 10 quick points, while keeping DS to only a couple of points, to seal the deal.

Guard play is weak, then again we did have the Jimmer last year. Gotta step it up for the Aggies Ouch.

All these AGgies are obviously jealous that they have never had or ever will have a Jimmer Fredette. Whaddaya know, a team loses its best player and they aren't quite as good. I have never seen that happen in sports ever.

  • idablu Idaho Falls, ID

After that performance, I would have to give the edge to USU in the upcoming matchup. BYU really struggles in the Spectrum and the Aggies will be ready and hot. Poor defense against a good shooting team like USU? Bad combination.
USU by at least 10. I'll be there cheering the Cougars on, though!

The most embarassing thing about the game was the refs. That should not happen in Provo. The final score means nothing. Dixie got ripped off. I am a Cougar fan and that win left a worse taste in my mouth than any loss would have.

    Nov. 5, 2011 11:51 a.m.

Reality check of what? Dixie State is a Division II team. Sure they hit shots. But the game shouldn't have been close. They are Division II BYU is Division I. Its time BYU acted like it, instead of rationalizing almost getting beat by one. Especially if BYU wants to make the claim to be one of the better D-I teams in the nation. USU is much more athletic than Dixie, and has some very good 3 point shooters. USU is guard strong with Pane, Medlin and Thoseby, which apparently was the BYU weak spot.

  • Back Overland Park, KS
    Nov. 5, 2011 11:38 a.m.

BYU has be de-JIMMERED! We have some decent bigs, but the lack of guard play is a concern. Jimmer was lucky to have Emery be the shut-down , defensive guard, while he was able to control the tempo of the game. Zylstara shows some shooting ability, but doesn't seem to control the game as well. Plus, there are no real quick, defensive guards on the team. Carlino will help to run the team, when he comes in Dec., but the team is going to struggle against good guards. The bigs are only as good as the boys feeding them the ball. I'm hoping for a good year, but have concerns. It reminds me of when Ainge moved on and the team took a big step down following.

  • shaybo Richfield, UT
    Nov. 5, 2011 11:37 a.m.

VAggie, if you think USU's offense in better than DSU's was last night you need a reality check.

This game showed me how badly the Coug's need Matt Carlino, Zylstra is a really nice player but he's a 2 guard, there wasn't enough of a flow offensively. The back up point guards are not going to cut it either. Where was Winder while DSC was raining down 3's, even as a freshman he plays the best D of the guards from what i've seen, I think he should be under consideration as the back up point guard. I would have liked to have seen more of Harrison and less of Abuo. One freshman mistake and he's on the bench while Abuo made blunder after blunder and didn't play defense even close to his normal self, seems to me mistakes are mistakes whether your a freshman or a senior.

  • shaybo Richfield, UT
    Nov. 5, 2011 11:17 a.m.

Offensively DSU's shooting was off the charts, BYU was totally off from outside, that's what kept the game close. Charles Abuo needs to quit listening to the writers saying he needs to pick up some of the scoring slack, he's trying to do to much, every time he goes one on one it ends up in disaster, a reality check is needed with him. He needs to go back to the way he played last year, scraping, hustling, crashing the boards and taking the open opportunity shots.

    Go Cougars!

Not a good sign for BYU thus far,... I was not impressed by any performance. Where are the play makers and the defensive stoppers at the point of attack? Dixie State dominated much of the game, especially with their post offense and guard penetration. Looks like this is going to be a rebuilding year, but only time will tell.

Wowww.. I was worried about this game because USU is also rebuilding. But dixie state? Really? USUs offense is much better than Dixie's, and USU usually has pretty good defense. IF BYU plays like this it wont be a 10 point spread, it'll be USU by 20. But I expect BYU to bring it, after all it IS a rivalry.

    no fit in SG

    "Maybe Jimmer will return?
Heard he is among the jobless."

In reality, a pending contract that will pay him more in the next five years, than you'll earn in your lifetime, but we wouldn't expect our Dixie troll to understand the "high math" of that equation.

It was very obvious last night that this is a rebuilding BYU team that's going to take some time to gel as a time. The Cougars have alot of good players who are still adjusting to their roll. I'd be very surprised if BYU doesn't lose to the Aggies by 10+, but with Rose as their coach and the addition of Carlino in late December, they'll be much better when the WCC season starts and another 25+ win, NCAA tournament season is still realistic.

Abouo needs to stop missing little bunnies under the hoop and BYU needs to show more energy on defense.

Look, BYU basketball will not be very good this year, and they will probably lose by 10+ in Logan. Y fans know this already, especially seeing they are ranked 3rd in the preseason WCC. But please stop with the ref whining above (seriously, you complain about reffing in an exhibition game, last year's BYU-USU basketball game and this year's BYU-USU football game...that's just sad).

There were more fans at this exhibition game than the TUN will see for any home game this year.

    Hartsock was solid all night.

This was the best game I've ever seen Zylstra play. Although it's apparent that he would be more natural at the 2 spot, he was solid at PG. He was impressive.

Davies and Rogers stepped up the last 5 minutes of the game to seal the deal.

The game next week will determine the state championship for BB. It will take a much better effort, especially on D, to get past the Aggies.

    Nov. 5, 2011 7:53 a.m.

Hey Zona Zone there is a reason for such a foul difference. Dixie State was hacking like crazy. If you don't want a lot of fouls, then don't hack at people. Having said that Dixie did what they had to. They didn't want to give up easy baskets and made BYU earn their points. I am disappointed that BYU struggled so much against a DII team, yes a very good DII team, but a DII team none the less. At least BYU didn't lose to a DII school like Utah did last night. Adams State beat Utah by one last night. HA. HA. HA.

  • payara OREM, UT
    Nov. 5, 2011 7:24 a.m.

Zona, agreed....refs were calling some ticy tac on Dixie's bigs. Zylstra and Rogers may be scoring points and that may be the reason nither guard thinks they have to play defense. USU will kill BYU with their guard play. Be ready for at least 10 3's and numberous layups from Greene and Pooh Williams. Inside BYU is solid but the guards show little interset in getting the ball down low, they would rather jack up a three.

Rooting for the Cougs... but all I see now are some very slow guards with a history of weak defense. Usu wins by 10

Sounds like some of the BYU players are a little worried about playing the USU AGGIES in Logan next Friday night! As well as they should be. I will tell you basketball junkies right now....USU will really miss TAI WESLEY but this years team is more guard oriented and USU's guards are going to eat byu's guards alive. Mark it!

As far as officiating, since when can anybody beat byu in Provo? They always, I say always get the benefit of Calls in Provo. Last year if there hadn't have been the fantom Call on Tai Wesley, USU would have beaten byu then, but the refs always bail them out in Provo. Just like in football this year in Provo. McCade Brady and the fantom so called helmut hit....If byu brings there refs I guarantee that they will see to it that another Aggie player gets kicked out of the game. byu can never play on an equal playing field or court it seems. Despite the perhaps officiating next week. The Aggies will win by 10. Good luck Stephen Rogers and your first visit to the Spectrum in Logan. Good luck to all the newbies, Spectrum magic awaits

Dixie State should have won that game. The foul calls were an embarrassing disparity, particularly down the stretch when the Red Storm's post players were fouled out of the game on plays that replays showed had no contact whatsoever. It was a bad night for the referees. Still, Dixie State played great. They showed why they were in the Sweet 16 in D-II last year, and the way they played tonight, you got to expect them to be back. BYU, meanwhile, looks OK. They've got somewhere to do defensively, but offensively, they should be strong. I was impressed by Zylstara.

    Go Red Storm! Go Cougars!
