How appropriate the heading is for this game. Bountiful did indeed pound Olympus. In fact, with 6 minutes left in the game Olympus receiver, Brandon McBride, was "pounded" by a Bountiful defender in a move many felt was uncalled for. Then while the Titan lay unconscious on the ground, the Bountiful Braves would not "take a knee", a tradition showing respect for an injured player on either side of the field. Shame on Bountiful! Shame on the coaching staff for missing an opportunity to teach good sportsmanship.
It was a clean, legal hit and football is a game of hard knocks. The Oly coach was upset because he didn't like the enthusiasm of the Brave player after the play - which is why the ref threw a flag on him (sideline warning). The Oly coach said something about it to Bountiful's coach and in fact, Bountiful's coach told his safety to go apologize to the Olympus coach - which he did. Bountiful's team doesn't "take a knee" even when their own player goes down. Just because Olympus' entire team "takes a knee" when a player is down, doesn't mean all other teams do. In fact a lot of teams don't do that......helps to know what you're talking about.
Too bad for my Titans. Great season, boys. Seniors, if this is your last game savor the memories. I've been gone 20 years but I still remember my last game like it was just yesterday. Underclassmen, get in the weight room and toughen up! It's your opportunity next year, but next year's victories are won in the offseason! Oly Pride!
There is nothing that says you have to take a knee when someone is hurt. Some people do and some don't you can't say they are classless just because your team does it and another doesn't. No player and coach wants anyone to get hurt. Those are the facts.
I hope Brandon is okay, he is a wonderful athlete and amazing wrestler and I wish him a speedy recovery and the chance to see him take the mats.
Coach Wall is a class act Titan fan so please lay off.
High wood mom..do you know how many times after a tackle or a big hit that a Bountiful player would help up an Olympus player? I saw it happen probably ten times. How many times did an Olympus player help up a Bountiful player? Don't think I saw any.... Shame on Bountiful for not taking a knee? Are you kidding me? Did they not clear the field and wait on the sideline? You're upset because there was a big, perfectly legal hit! Grow up, it's football. If you don't like being hit go play chess or checkers.
Labeling that hit as clean is a bit questionable. The young man led with his head, both feet were off of the ground, and McBride was not part of the play. It would be classified as "spearing." The sideline warning was against the two Oly trainers that pushed the officials that were between the sideline and the injured player. The Oly coach was upset about the helmet to helmet blow. The FS was not the one that the coaches were discussing at the end of the game, nor was he the one that apologized....helps to know what you're talking about.
I doubt very highly that the player that made the hit intended for McBride to get injured. Enthusiasm is part of the game, especially on a game clinching interception.
Not many teams take a knee when someone is hurt. It is not a sign of disrespect to not take a knee. Bountiful is a hard-nosed team that shows great class.
Great season Titans! You made your community proud.
Nite-Train, tough loss last night at East. At least you took second in region.
"McBride was not part of the play."
Are you kidding me?
Ok, just to get this straight, the Oly kid who was injured is named McBride right? If so, don't know how you can say he "was not part of the play" when he was the INTENDED RECEIVER at the spot where the pass was broken up by two Bountiful defenders...one of whom was the safety. Please don't make stuff up (again, double check the part where you reference "game clinching interception" - also weird since it was 27-14 at that point half way through the 4th).
Secondly, refs don't throw flags well after a play is blown dead when trainers rush to a downed player. They do throw flags for other reasons.
As for the hit, it was clean and hard (very hard)...NOT "spearing." 3 players were making a hard play on a pass and the Oly receiver came up on the bad end of that play. It's football...it happens.
BTW, OlyTitans...if you can give me a number of the Bountiful player in question...feel free. I don't think you can.
To: "OlyTitans" - McBride was not part of the play? He was the intended receiver...how was he not part of the play?
And to all you Olympus fans...stop hyping your team up. This is the second year in a row that you hyped your team up like they were the best team in 4A. Last year you hyped them up...56-14 Braves...this year you hyped them up...34-14 Braves. Just be satisfied w/being perfectly average. Had you been in region 6 again...you probably wouldn't have even made it past the 1st round considering you probably would've entered in as a 4th seed...kind of like last year.
Player in question is #8. McBride was not the intended receiver, #9 was. McBride was the receiver on the second level.
Best of luck against Logan. You have a tremendous program with great tradition. Nothing but the utmost respect from Oly.
I wish I could say I have the upmost respect for Olympus...but I've been to Olympus for soccer, football, and basketball and I have never been around a school that is so disrespectful to Bountiful (other than Woods Cross). I will have all the respect in the world for Olympus when they can prove themselves on the field and not in the extracurricular activities. Respect is earned on the scoreboard and the field, not through the talk and the hype.
@highwoodmom. I hope your player is ok and he is ready for wrestling season. Where does it say that teams have to take a knee when a player is injured? This is not Pee-wee football and is not considered disrespectful if both teams don't take a knee. We had a player go down with a concussion and the mom's on the opposite field were yelling "take a knee, show some respect"! 20 minutes these players had to take a knee and when one got up to stretch that same mom kept yelling. THIS IS NOT PEE WEE FOOTBALL AND NOT DISRESPECTFUL if a knee is not taken. Good season Olympus. Bountiful you are going to get pounded again by Logan!!!!
I was at the game and there was no disrespect to Bountiful at all. They were treated just like any other team (and there was nowhere near the heated rivalry at, say, the Skyline game). The hit on McBride was questionable, as was a hit on Chandler Thornton on the east sideline. There's just no need to hit someone who is nearly out of bounds that hard, especially when you're leading by such a huge margin. I also found it a bit tacky to go for a touchdown when you're already leading by two scores and there's only 2 minutes left. But whatever, part of the game I guess.
Incidentally, most of the teams Olympus played this year took a knee when any player was injured (just as Olympus did). I think it's a sign of sportsmanship and respect, and I wish all teams did it.
There is always something...something to say about a team that just crushed you. Like calling them classless.
Such complaints reveal more about the class of the conquered than the conquerer. (See Highland fans after a not-very-close loss to Logan).
Impressive win Bountiful. Looks like a different team than the one Logan played earlier. I'll be cheering that Logan beats this improved Bountiful team just as soundly.
Since I had witnessed taking a knee as a sign of respect at all the other games I attended, I assumed (bad on my part)that this was a standard demonstration of good sportsmanship in Utah sports (I grew up in Montana). I felt (and still do) that it is a classly thing to do. If it is considered "pee-wee", then perhaps we all ought to go "back" to pee-wee demonstrations of respect for a wounded player.
I based my comment that the play was "questionable" on witness accounts of those who were standing near the place of impact. I would be interested in seeing video. Unless a spectator was on the Oly side of the field no one, including myself, could see the play clearly.
To come clean-McBride is my son. He is doing very well and is looking forward to a tough wrestling season. In football, as in wrestling, a loss is not bad if there is a lesson learned. I now know taking a knee is not typical in UT sports. I think it should be. Good luck to Bountiful.
@OlyTitans
I was watching my underdog eagles take the second best team in 4A to the brink of elimination on their home field while you were getting dominated by a "solid" Bountiful own your home turf.
Congrats on the region title its already been forgotten.
Go region 6, show them who is the toughest region in 4A
Good luck East
Good luck Braves
i bet those 2 meet in the championship
RAMS ALLDAY
To SLCBOY: Much respect, second year in a row 2 of the 4 team at RES will be region 6 teams. Lots of respect for the Highland Rams.
To OLYTITANS: I have just watched the film because I have a sibling on Bountiful's team. It is obvious that McBride was the intended receiver, the hit was completely clean, he was obviously involved in the play, and no intention on injuring him was made. It was very clear that no helmet to helmet contact was made either. It was a typical football play where the intended receiver was over thrown and was hit after he could not make the play.
To Highwoodmom: Your son is an incredible athlete. I've seen him wrestle before and I am very impressed with his skill. I wish you and him the best and hope to see him as a collegiate athlete some day.
