The "billboard" barn in my home town of Willits, California, had "Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery" painted on it. Wonder if it's still there.
This is a great story, and the details supplied make it wonderfully nostalgic. More than a year ago we had a small barn that was listing badly too so my husband, sons-in-law, grandsons and my father, then 88, used farmhands, come-alongs, cables and muscles of varying ages to reposition it, then stabilize it. Our barn is "Monarch's Barn." Monarch was a work-horse who pulled farm equipment in the 1930s and 40s and lived to a ripe old age. There were other work-horses too, but the barn was Monarch's. Today it houses my husband's garden equipment. The livestock corral is now a big fertile garden spot, visited by many garden produce lovers. Many of the visitors trade items they have for vegetables, but my husband also gives away about a ton of food each season. I guess we need to find a painter of old barns to paint its name.
This was about my great grandfather's, James Olsen, brother's barn. What a great little piece to add to our family history! My mother remembers playing in and around that barn growing up because her grandpa lived right next door. Thanks for this.
I love Utah!
"...and every few years Evan has Rich Horrell, a local man who 'knows how to paint old barns old,' come by and touch up the letters."

I thought so!
When I first started reading the story I thought, "That paint sure doesn't look 100 years old." I was beginning to wonder how I could find the brand of paint used when I read the sentence above.
Even though I didn't find out about a super paint, I enjoyed the story.
One of my earliest memories of traveling to Cache Valley with my parents about 60 years ago was this barn with "Dr. Pierces Favorite Prescription" on it. My grandparents there were named Pearce so I always identified with this sign and knew exactly where to look for it on our trips. Thank you for this bit of nostalgia.
This barn is near and dear to the hearts of College Ward residents. I must tell you the reason it is still standing strong! In about 1998 it was leaning & twisting, beginning to fall. The inner framework of 8 inch unpeeled logs was failing. The local High Priests Quorum of College Ward (yes, there is still a local congregation) and the Norr family gathered donated materials, and provided the labor to shore up the structure. During the process local passersby were alarmed to see the siding come off! All were relieved to see it put back together a week or so later. So it is because of considerable effort that the barn stands today! Thank Mr. Zilles, Hansen, Nelson, Floyd, Norr & Stevenson!
