Don't understand this formula at all. How does an undefeated LP team beat Bingham by 21 points and still have a lower rating? Not that it matters at all, I'm just not sure how it works. For example LP averages more points than Bingham, gives up fewer, beat them head to head, and just won by 45 points in the playoffs. Not adding up. Anyone have any idea how this is calculated?
Google Parry's Power Guide and you will find their website with this explanation:
The purpose of the guide is to show the strength of a team in relation to other teams in the league. Each teams rating consists of two factors; an offensive rating and a defensive rating. The offensive rating is based on final score and the defensive rating is based on strength of schedule. The combination of these two ratings establishes a power rating for that team. When you compare the ratings of the two teams that play each other, you can determine who is favored by how many points.
The ratings are updated weekly, by computer, based on a formula created by Noland Parry.
Thanks for the info I appreciate it! The guide is a good effort and shows fairly accurately the strength of teams here in Utah. However it is 100% computer generated so it won't be perfect which is shown in a few different cases. Anyways, I'm excited for the second round of the playoffs. Good luck to all the teams!
don't like computer rankings at all especially for high school. too many wild card factors.
The eyeball test to me says that LP should be ranked ahead of Bingham. The scoreboard and what I watched on TV supercedes the computer here.
I think the formula factors in enrollment size of the school as well. Bingham has one of the biggest in the state. Probably the only schools bigger are Alta, Riverton and Davis.
My guess is that since you pointed this out an adjustment will be made and in a couple weeks, IF Bingham and Lone Peak play, Lone Peak will have a higher rating.
Just like the BCS. Stupid computers I like human guesswork a little bit better so long as it isn't biased opinion.
Truesilverwolf, the problem with that is finding someone who isn't biased to provide an opionion. The ones who care enough about high school sports to form an opinion are likely to be biased for one team or another.
The only reason I can think of for Bingham having a higher rating than Lone Peak is strength of schedule. The Miners have played an undefeated Lone Peak team and Orange Lutheran, who would most likely have beaten any Utah team. Yes, I know I'm going to catch flack from LP fans for saying that but it's my honest opinion. You don't have to like it and I don't care if you do.
All of the teams Lone Peak has played have at least one loss other than to LP.
College football is very content with allowing public opinion, and somebody's complicated mathematical formula for a computer to decide who the best teams are.
But the beauty of high school sports is best teams are decided how it should be, on the field.
I know people get confused about the power guide. but remember that with HS football, it has no bearing on who the eventual state champion is.
If Lone Peak wins the 5A championship, to LP fans it won't matter that Bingham had a higher ranking.
All the computer does is work the formula which was developed by a human. Humans have to plug in the numbers in every week so the computer can update the rating. All the computer is, is a fancy calculator. Nothing more!

How in the world was West given a home field advantage??
Higher seed
of course bingham has a harder schedule than lone peak... Lone peak hasn't had to play lone peak.
Ursua is the best this year.
It is only numbers if you look at some of his picks even he goes against the numbers. Binghams rating comes from points scored and points scored against since they played alot of the same teams here are a few examples:
Bingham 35, American Fork 7 / Bingham 49, Lehi 0 / Bingham 41, Pleasant Grove 0
Lone Peak 49, American Fork 7/Lone Peak 52, Lehi 20/Lone Peak 17,Pleasant Grove 0
Strength of schedule and scores in Lehi and PG make the differance. Bingham beat Alta but later had a lower ranking than Alta. LP fans simmer down I am not saying Miners are better than LP it is only numbers. After all Syracuse beat Alta nobody guessed that. That's why the playoffs are so much fun anyone can win and lose on any given day after all thats why we play!!! Have fun everyone.
Only one team out of Region 9 moves on past this Friday, and that team is Hurricane. JD,Delta, and Stansbury move on to RES.R-9 has been all talk since preseason, and only one team has earned that right, the Tigers. The rest of the southern teams have not been able to play with the top teams of 3 -A,
The Pine View players and coaches have been the only talkers from region 9.
I would like you to reference any other team other than Pine View with a specific example of talk. Please give me the article and date so I can learn from what you have experienced.
@the official
What top 3A teams have Region 9 not been able to play with other than JD? Delta and Stansbury have not beat any Reg 9 teams. We may only get one Region 9 team to RES but Delta and Stansbury have their hands full with Cedar and DH and it will be very close if they get wins tomorrow.
