A wonderful story. Sometimes we don't realize what six decades with someone will do in terms of bonds that are built. My grandfather died in May, and my grandmother, healthy as could be, just suffered a major brain bleed a few days ago from the high blood pressure her grief aggravated. She'll soon join him where she belongs, which is at his side. Thanks for the great story. I needed it tonight.
Doug, thanks for sharing. I am a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan and your father's heroics are inspiring. Sorry for you loss.
These are our hero's we should be extolling and proudly modeling our lives after.
We have lost sight of them and they are not forthcoming about why they did what they did, they can only tell you why, their country and their freedoms and their family. Cowards die a thousand deaths, hero's die once.
Thanks for sharing this story with us and this is what being an american is all about. It's not about the riches, education, or prosperity, its loving your country, your family, believing in yourself without expecting government welfare. Its independence, that is the name of our constitution, "The Declaration of Independence". Embrace it, love it, live by it and you will never want for anything. And the rich can keep their money because its not mine.
Great Story. Good work sharing it.
Great story Doug. No doubt you father gave you an incredible example of being a man, father and husband.
Doug,
Thanks for your story. As an Army Brat, I can relate.
My deployed experiences have shown to me that we continue to have intelligent and couragous Service Members. I am thankful for each person that has served.
Inspiring! I wish our youth were taught lessons like this in public schools rather than how evil America is.
If not sure if I'm crying because I'm sad for you, or if it's because I am happy for your Father. Either way, you story brought tears to my eyes.
What an inspiring story. I am sure his example and how he treats your mom was a great thing to witness and carry it forward to your children. My Dad is my Hero though he never fought in a war or can't slam dunk a basketball anymore. He is a hero to me due to his sacrifices and love for my mom and all 7 of his children;I hope to do the same to my 4 children and hope and pray they will carry on the torch of life. Honoring those who have been before, respecting those in the now and looking forward to the future one that will come. I love the circle of life!!! We all live in each other!!!
An amazing story of humility, loayalty, courage, dedication and love by a person who fought the battles of our nation. One of the many to whom we owe a great debt of gratitude. Thank you for sharing.
Tremendous column. Thanks for sharing.
Darn it, how am I supposed to read with tears in my eyes?
Wonderful article about a wonderful man.
God bless you all!
