Deseret news used to be fun to make comments on. We could make anonymous comments, ribbing our friends without them knowing it was us. We could make secret plugs for our 'favorite players' The number of comments, thus deseret news followers, has dropped considerably since then. Best soccer players in the state are Maris Hamblin and Wesley Hamblin. This was decided by a unanimous vote by the Hamblin family. Go Lone Peak. Love Pop
Here are how my brackets look
Riverton 3-1
Alta 4-0
Lone Peak 2-1
Viewmont 2-0
Maple Mtn 2-1
Skyline 2-1
Timp 3-0
Hillcrest 2-1
Bear river 2-1
JD 2-0
Park City 1-0
Ogden 2-1
Millard 4-3
Waterford 3-0
Manti 4-1
St Joes 5-0
fremont upsets and wins it all :)
I say the best team in the state wins it all!!! Go Alta Lady Hawks!! :):)
Today's winners: Riverton, Alta, Lone Peak, and Viewmont. No upsets today.
Riverton has the great Darian Jenkins to score its goals. Pume will keep the shutout in goal.
Alta is over its case of the nerves from the first half of the Weber game, and will continue its great form. Nobody can stop Michelle Murphy, and if they mark her out of the game, Lexe Selman, Bizzy Phillips, and Maddie Lyons will pick up the slack. MaxPreps has taken notice of Alta ranking them No. 1 in the country last week, and number 8 this week.
Lone Peak has the Hamblin sisters and Caitlin Wrubell. Perhaps KSL will cover the game with Greg Wrubell providing the play by play. Julia Vaughn plays a tough keeper after having transferred from Alta last year.
Viewmont should overcome its nervous opening round game and score several goals today. Look for Ali Forsberg to come up big today.
Last round's games show the impact that La Roca and Forsa have made on soccer up North. Sandy and Salt Lake no longer have the monopoly on talent. More parity will help Utah soccer.
Agreed that the DesNews censors have taken the fun out of comments.
Go Fremont!
@Bobby if you say there will be no upsets then you would have to go with Davis over Riverton, the Darts are the higher seed.
My picks:
Davis over Riverton 2-1, close but home field prevails.
Alta over West 6-0, not even close in talent here.
Lone Peak in a close one 2-1, Fremont is big and physical.
Viewmont over Northridge 4-0, Vikes wanted Brighton (revenge from last year) and will take out their frustrations on Knights.
@coach68
Davis is only the higher seed because Riverton lost the coin flip to Lone Peak and had to go in second seed. It will be a good game.
@4thekids
thanks for the clarification. It will indeed be a good game. Two of them will be good and close. The other two, with Alta and Viewmont wont be close.
The Riverton/Davis game will be the close game today. Davis is the higher seed, but Riverton has a better record and a lower seed because of coin flip.
The key for Davis will be to stop Darian Jenkins who is US National Team player and heading to UCLA. She is extremely fast and very experienced. Riverton has a great keeper as well in Pume. Davis probably has more talent at the other positions than Riverton, so it should be a great game.
I'm picking Riverton because of Darian Jenkins, but if Davis can neutralize her, Davis can win.
Don't be fooled by the records of the teams in Region 1. Toughest region in the state hands down. As far as the remaining non-Region 1 teams are concerned all I have to say is no strength of schedule.
This comment is supported by the fact that there are 3 Region 1 teams left and Northridge (Region 1's #3 team) beat the mighty Bengals from Brighton. My prediction for today: Fremont, Viewmont, Davis, and Alta in the Final Four.
@JusticeServed
So much for your predictions! Region 1 has proven many times that they are not the best region. Let's take a look at who has one the State Title the last 5 years?! Brighton and Alta. And the last two were won by beating Davis & Viewmont.
Northridge may have upset Brighton, which only shows that any team can win on any given day. And from looking at final scores today.... Lone Peak takes Fremont, Davis barely wins, and Viewmont had to win in a shootout. I'm predicting a Lone Peak victory. Viewmont's weak region didn't prepare them well.
My prediction is that Alta will win another state title by a landslide victory. Possibly even on the mercy rule!! I am a Bengal parent, but I say "GO HAWKS"!!!
Viewmonts region play had nothing to do with today.
As for Alta winning another title it could happen. By the mercy rule, no way, remember those mighty Hawks have a loss this season to Viewmont.
The cream raises to the top. In both 4A and 5A the top seeds from all the regions are still playing.
What an exciting night for soccer. Close, competitive games except for the Alta blowout.
Rumor has it that with Lone Peak and Alta in the semis, the KSL broadcast team of Greg Wrubell and Mark Lyons will call some real "football" games next Tuesday at Juan Diego. Greg Wrubbell's daughter Caitlin plays for Lone Peak and Mark Lyon's granddaughter is Alta super sophomore Maddie Lyons. It's fun to watch these two BYU football commentators become spectators at real "football" games.
Viewmont is struggling in the post season. Perhaps too much hype after their surprise victory over Alta.
Lone Peak is "peaking" at the right time and looks tough to beat.
Davis eked out a tough win over Riverton by holding Darian Jenkins at bay.
Alta continues its incredible form. West focused on Michelle Murphy and Bizzy Phillips and Lexe Selman picked up the slack which then freed Michelle Murphy up to score a hat trick.
There should be some exciting semifinals soccer next Tuesday at Juan Diego in 5A, and if Greg Wrubell and Mark Lyons put girls' soccer on KSL, it will be even more exciting. Juan Diego, please prepare the broadcast booth.
@Bobby
Viewmont isn't really struggling in post season, they ran through region but knew state would not be as easy as that. They dominated Bingham and Northridge packed it in and made life rough but the Vikes played okay. Also they deserve the hype, they placed second at state last year and have almost all back this year and they are good.
Alta score did not surprise anyone, the Hawks got a great draw.
Viewmont and LP will be a good match up while Alta will take care of Davis.
Prediciting a Vike-Hawk final and it will be classic.
@chsoccermom
I sense a slight undertone of bitterness in you at Brighton's early departure to a #3 team out of Region 1. Weber the #4 team in Region 1 had the mighty Hawks 0-0 at half. As far as Davis is concerned, anyone who was at the game today saw that Davis missed at least 4 goals, including a PK, but dominated Riverton (15-2) the entire time. The score does not reflect Davis' dominance over Riverton. Whether Alta wins it all or not does not mean that Region 3 as a whole is tougher than Region 1. Outside of Brighton and Alta who else is there in your region? Cottonwood? Please.
@JusticeServed
Yeah, Weber had the mighty Hawks 0-0 at half but for some reason you failed to mention that those same mighty Hawks won that game 5-0. Honestly, watching the game, I thought Alta was going to win on mercy rule with all goals scored in the second half and offensive dominance. ...and as for Viewmont, they beat West twice in region play 4-1. They couldn't pull a shutout on West on either game?? Really? A three goal differential is not really a blowout like the 8-0 beating that West took (at mercy) last night against Alta; more than 20 miniutes was still left in the game when they ended it. Alta is ready for any team that comes their way! The state championship says it all! And as for your Region 1 dominance, correct me if I'm wrong, but between Alta and Brighton, haven't they taken state the past several years?:)
About seven or eight in a row I believe :p
The history of soccer in Utah always includes teams from Davis County and Sandy in the top brackets. Mountain View, Skyline and others have always had their turn on top as well. There are 2 and three premier club teams in each grade in Sandy right now. I know LaRoca is training their players to be the best as well. They should be well represented in play-offs. Games are often determined by one error or by one extra exceptional play. The final 4 teams are hoping for the later and praying to avoid the errors. I am just hoping for an injury free tournament for all teams and for some great soccer.
