I find these hunger statistics hard to believe!
With Food Stamps, Free School Lunches, WIC, etc., why are there so many hungry children? And, what are other preschool age kids watching Sesame Street supposed to do about it?
I thought that we had an obesity epidemic in this country! Perhaps they should give the hungry muppet a friend... "overweight muppet"!
Seriously, I think the problem in this country is too much eating, not too little! And I don't believe there are as many hungry children as they would like us to believe.
My family was on food stamps for a period of time and we had more food from that program than we knew what to do with. We had hundreds, yes hundreds, of dollars of credit left over after every month. And we could have received WIC on top of that had we chosen to. I don't believe there is a huge hunger problem in this country!
Serious, I was going to say that you may need to leave Rexburg to find it, but it looks like there may be hungry people right here in Idaho. Check out the Food Bank of Idaho's Backpack Program for kids.
Just because some people can benefit from food stamps and other programs for the needy does not mean that everyone is. Some people dont know how to take advantage of such programs and the ones that suffer the most are the children.
I think it's a bit naive to think that hunger is not a problem in this country.

Let's take this a step further.
With a very successful LDS welfare program, food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, etc, why are there so many hungry children?
There are many reasons. And yet, we are no closer to elimiting hunger in this country...
as we send food to third world countries. Like Haiti, etc.
Do I think we should STOP?
No.
But obviously, we have not solved the issue of hunger, in America.

2 word reply. You might have heard of him:
Cookie. Monster.
So... what are preschool age children supposed to do about this alleged hunger problem?
Why can't these hungry people sign up for the programs that are there? You can add that backpack program to the others...
Seriously, with all the programs designed to fight hunger, there should not be a single hungry child in America. If parents are really unable to feed their kids with all the help available, perhaps the state should step in in these RARE situations. These parents are probably completely incompetent, or are selling their food stamps for drugs, and/or are incapable of being parents.
Again, with the obesity epidemic, I believe the predominant problem in America is too much food, not too little.
