Many thanks to the DN editorial board for highlighting this injustice. I'm certain there are other states where a Democratic majority has acted in a similar manner so let's not try to claim purity on either side of the aisle. We are a nation of people and, as such, all of our people should have a voice in government. When our government - state, local or national - does anything to limit that voice or to make it meaningless, then injustice has occurred. In a state like Utah, where there is a clear majority of one party, it boggles the mind to think the leaders of that party are so insecure that they need to mis-use their political power to further strengthen that majority. What could they be afraid of? Representative government?
Whoever accused Utah's legislators of being ethical was sadly mistaken.
It is ridiculous to split cities the way they plan to do such that incumbents are protected.
Utah's legislature is an abomination in serious need of change.
The voters should choose their representatives. When the representatives choose their voters, we have a serious problem.
repubs doing something unethical?
the board in charge of redistricting is pulling shenaningas? Gee... What a surprise...
Yes, the legislature is acting unethically.
But you keep voting for them, so they figure that means it's OK with you.
If you're sick of living in the bottom of a hole and want to get out, then step #1 is to stop digging.
In trying to solve one perceived problem, this editorial creates another. The author is concerned that the number of Democratic voters does not reflect the number of Democratic senators. If we start redistricting based on partisanship, then incumbency rates, which many see as already too high, will rise. I'm also curious about the part of either the U.S. or state constitutions that guarantee a person the right to a representative of their own party. I just can't find it.
Spot on, D News. Thanks for shedding a little more light on this travesty. To quote Lord Acton (with apologies if it isn't exact), "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." The arrogance of the state legislature, as evidenced by the redistricting fiasco, is appalling. I've probably voted for more Republicans than Democrats in my life but the combined antics of this legislature is tipping the balance the other way.
It is amuzing how whiny are the libs and dems when republicans who are in power do exactly what the dems and libs do when they are in power.
Best laugh of the day.
If you libs and dems are so concerned about equality and "fairness" I suggest you put your money where your mouth is an start in the states controlled by vast democrat numbers and redraw districts to give the republicans a "fair" chance.

In reading the resident uber-Progressives I'm reminded of the saying that goes something like this.." People in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks". I'm also reminded of "let him who is without sin case the first stone".
I think that pretty much sums up the hypocrisy of the Left.
Thanks for your "outside" view ECR but those of us who actually live in Utah will take it from here.
I'm sure you have local concerns that you should be addressing instead of always trying to dictate to Utahns what we should or shouldn't do.
It never ceases to amaze me at how many "former" Utahns feel compelled to inject themselves into local politics. I didn't realize how many narcissist there are out there these days.
"It is amuzing how whiny are the libs and dems when republicans who are in power do exactly what the dems and libs do when they are in power."
Examples please. I want to know specifically what "libs" have done to "pick on" the corporate err grand old party.
The repubs are perfect in mudslinging.
But today, we need solutions. No more filibustering no more of these games. We need solutions, quick.
Well maverick: take a look at california, illinois, new york and any other dem controlled state and tell me how funny their lines are drawn - down to almost putting lines through a house.
Then tell me how those states are doing financially, tax wise, etc., and compare it to Utah!
@Charles - I will woger that I have more relatives living in Utah and own more property than you. I do have a vested interest in what happens there.
Of course I mean "I will wager..." I have to stop letting @Charles get to my noramlly calm composure! =)
@ECR: I'm not sure why the truth hurts you so much. Who cares how many relatives you have who live in Utah. Since my roots are in Provo many generations past, I'd be willing to bet that I outrank you in relatives in Utah.
I'd also take your bet that I have more land than you do in Utah.
The difference is that I LIVE in Utah and vote in Utah. You don't.
But hey, thanks again for you deep, deep concern for the boundary lines in Utah. Rest assured, we won't take it under advisement.
One less uber-Progressive to worry about!
@The Real Maverick
"Examples please."
Todays story about Illinois redrawing boundaries to insure Republicans have to run against each other in the primaries.
Please dont play victim - it is not credible
@ Charles said, "@ECR: I'm not sure why the truth hurts you so much."
Who said I'm hurt by the truth. The DN editorial board called the Republican legislature on their crooked practices and I agreed with that truth. It doesn't hurt me in the least.
"But hey, thanks again for you deep, deep concern for the boundary lines in Utah. Rest assured, we won't take it under advisement."
Apparently you agree with the Utah legislature that only YOUR opinion counts and you don't want to know or hear anyone elses feelings on any subject. Just know this, no matter how much you complain about my presense on this comment page, I'll still be here, exercising my right to do so.
And by the way, I've checked Google Maps and there doesn't seem to be a Great Outdoors, Utah. Could you point that out on the map so I can verify that YOU are resident of Utah?
@ECR: You are too easy pal.
Yes, unless you live and vote in Utah, your opinion doesn't count at all. In fact, it's very narcissistic of you to try to dictate to Utahns what they should or shouldn't do. But that's the Socialist way -- tell others what to do because you "think" you are smarter than they are.
Trust me, if I didn't live in Utah I wouldn't waste my time on this thread or any other that aren't part of my state, regardless if I have relatives or own property in the state.
In the immortal words of your Dear Leader, "elections have consequences. [We]won!" If that was good enough for him to try to ramrod his Communist agenda through on the nation then I guess it is the right of the Repubs in Utah to draw the boundaries.
Do I necessarily agree with them? Nope. Trust me, my senator and representative hear enough from me about the issues.
You are good for some chuckles each day though....
If we carve out districts designed to improve the chances of electing a Democrat in one of them, several unintended consequences will occur. First, the representative elected to the "Democratic" district will tend to cater only to his/her own party. Second, the other three districts will elect reps that cater only to their own party. That will have the effect of Utah electing four House members that cater to ideological extremes, and it will also have the effect of improving the incumbents' chance of reelection, which many people think is too high already. I'd rather have four districts with as close as possible to a partisan balance so that the candidates really do have to fight over my vote.
Zion falls from within.
You gerry mander districts to make sure democrats are NOT elected and your only justification is that "everybody is doing it".
The indignation of The Real Maverick is amusing. Since when has politics not been politics. The union puppets, er Democrats, biggest complaint is that they are not in power.
