First of all I have to say that 1A baseball has figured out when baseball should be played "in the Fall", only thing is how do you get a TRUE champion when all the 1A schools don't play in the Fall? I guess if this how you become a State Champion by playing out of the regular season then so be it. I wil go out on a limb and say that Wayne or Panguitch will win it again this year?

1A Baseball is the ONLY classification in high school to play in the fall. College only has preseason games in the fall. MLB starts in the spring but because they play over 160 games it ends in the fall. So maybe the 1A teams(and the ones that should have a football team, example Panguitch) should play baseball in the spring with everyone else. Monticello and Altamont are the only 1A teams that will do it! Milford did but went back to 1A couple years back. I would like to see Rich and Duchesne get a team! 1A baseball would be so intense like basketball if all these teams were competing against each other in the spring!

Well, if the weather patterns hold like they have been, we that play baseball in the spring will continue playing half seasons. If we changed the school calender start times to begin the tuesday after Labor Day like the rest of the nation, then spring baseball would benefit greatly by having an extra 2-3 weeks of warmer weather to play in. These mid August starts are really stupid!

yankees27 I agree! Games during the first couple of weeks in March are usually canceled because of weather problems.

Well 1A baseball is in the fall becuase most small schools do not have football. So some of you would want fall baseball, that would be great but what about football and all those players that cross over those two sports.

Like the QB for Bingham is a great pitchers for the miners, so he would have to make a tough chioce of which sport to play.

The only reason there is fall HS baseball is so that the 1A schools that are not big enough for football can have a boys fall sport. Well and come to think of it most 2A schools could do football and baseball at the same time either.

Baseball in the fall for 2A-5A just wouldnt work.

That would an interesting decision for HS kids to make, Baseball or Football? I wonder if more kids (particularly at the larger schools) would participate in sports overall, when player A decides to play football thus leaving an opening on the baseball team.

I think it would be very hard on the smaller schools trying to field teams for both sports at once.

I would think if you could put 9 on the field to play baseball you could get 11 for football. Maybe if we went to 8 man football for 1A and had 1A baseball in the spring we could have more schools participate in both.

All of your comments are valid but what the heck is all the 1A Boys doing in the spring that they can't play baseball? Pick and choose your season is the best way to win the title I guess?

1A Golf is held in the spring for the boys that play baseball in the Fall. Many of the boys double up on track as well.
To William, Many years ago a motion was taken to the UHSAA to allow the smaller 1A's to play 8 man football and it was shot down, I don't even think it was considered. You may be able to put 9 on a field, and I know a lot of teams this year that only have 10 kids on their whole team. Do the same 11 boys play both sides all the times at SJ? Nope, that is what it would be here if we did play football. I think the town here would love to see football, it would be a huge boost for the community. The numbers just aren't there. Let's support the kids that play fall baseball not look at ways to see why they are not playing football.

Not all our players go both ways GR basketball fan but the majority do play both sides. I know many of the 1A teams do play everyone on both sides of ball. I heard a Monticello fan the otherday laughing about the Bucks coach yelling for the punt team 1 kid ran off the field and one came on. However you are right you would need about 15-16 boys to make a football team I would think, thats 3-4 boys per grade level. I think alot of 1A schools could pull this off. I think the biggest hold back is the $ it would take to start football.

Fairytale it is the same for 1A football - You only have 8 teams competing for a
state title. At least in baseball you have 16 teams competing for a state title.
I wish they would go 7 or 8 man football but I think it is the cost for the small schools that will never allow that to happen.
A novel idea would be to move the 1A schools that have football teams to 2A \. If they have enough kids to play football they should play in 2A then they could play baseball in the spring.

There are plenty of 1A schools that play baseball that can get a football team. If a team can have a wrestling program and basketball team than they should have a football team! Panguitch, Piute, Wayne, Escalante. Even Ssome of the 1A teams has soccer programs.

There you go to switch the 1A golf and baseball seasons.

Some of you are having a hard time understanding the baseball vs football issue. First, there is no way any of the schools mentioned would ever get the financial backing from their districts to get a football program. This may have happened 15 years ago, but it's not going to happen now. Next, schools like Panguitch, Wayne, and Piute are just not as big as most people think. The class sizes at Panguitch are around 30 per class, this puts their enrollment (9th - 12th) below 100. While Milford has football and is smaller, take a look at their record over the last 10 years. Why would schools like Panguitch and Wayne give up fall baseball to play football where they just wouldn't compete? Also, at nearly 7000 ft, I'm not sure what type of season Panguitch could have in the spring. I know that other high elevation communities play in the spring, but that can't be that fun. Fall is great weather for baseball, and as much as some want to complain that these schools don't have football..... we wouldn't have it any other way.

They don't have to give up Baseball, just play the sport when everyone else does and play golf in the Fall when 2A plays it which I seriously doubt there are many boys from these schools who play golf in High School, give up its just a ploy to get to that EASY state title that sooooo many schools want. There isn't one valid point you make that says that they have to play baseball in the Fall, you just do it because all the other schools who can compete against you choose to play it when everyone else does and they have to play against 2A schools.

PANGUITCH, UT

Fairytale. have you ever heard of an "easy" state title? the 1a schools could compete with the 2-5a schools if we had that many kids to choose from. and its hard to compete with schools that have 100 kids or more in each class. my graduating class has 30! kids in it. we dont do cuts from our team because our numbers are so small that everyone gets a chance no matter what. If you think there is an easy state championship, then come watch the 1a teams play and see if you still think that it is possible to have an easy state championship. P.S. our golf team is full.

Fairytale
Heber City, UT

tpainless, lets not throw a curve ball my arguement is you 1A schools CAN play baseball in the Spring you just choose to do it in the Fall and myself and everyone else would like to know why you play in the Fall and the truth because I know your golf team isn't full!

tpainless
PANGUITCH, UT

ok. then why did you state that "ploy to get the easy state championship all the schools want?" and truth is, our golf team IS full. besides i'd rather play in the fall anyways. spring is usually too cold to play until april or may. idk when the other teams start in spring but that is around where we would be able to start. sorry i don't mean to sound arrogant or rude. just trying to figure out why its such a big deal. we do play those teams but we would get destroyed if we played like Spanish Fork or Bingham

1a ball boy
TABIONA, UT

well first off i am a boy that plays on the 1a baseball team and if you think that playing baseball in the fall is an easy state championship?! Ya right the reason we play in the fall is because we are not big enough to play football we have probably 40 kids (boys and girls) in our 9-12 grades so there is no way possible to play football so 1a plays baseball in the fall. So that kids like me can do TRACK! that would suck to have to pick between baseball and track. 1a teams that have a football team should be big enough to go 2a. Come to the games on the 4th 7th and 8th of october and tell me how easy it is. o and is what really gets me is why Heber cares they arent 1a or 2a why do they really care? i can say the same thing about 1a football they have half as many teams as 1a baseball so i could say the same thing "thats an easy championship wow 8 teams" but i dont because i know its hard like 1a baseball is

Do the 1A teams still get to use BESR bats this season, since it is not 2012 yet?
