I'm an Alabama Fan living in Utah. I graduated from Utah but when I was there, football was a joke (early 80's). I'm more of a BYU Hater than a Utah Fan and very proud to admit that. I've not been to a Utah game in years and will sometimes watch on TV. If BYU is playing on TV and I'm not doing anything...I will watch and root very hard against them. I've found nothing about the BYU Football program that interests me and the fans drive me crazy. The typical person that is a fan knows very little about football and especially about college football history.

I'm a big fan of the BCS as this eliminated the possibility of 1984 ever happening again. I laugh now each time I hear a Utah fan talk about how hard their schedule will now be with no weeks off. People around here, especially BYU fans never got that or believed a person that felt BYU, Utah, or Boise State could never make it through an SEC schedule with less than 4 losses. They do not have the talent and mainly the depth. College football in Utah is 2nd Class at best

So are you a Utah fan or a Tide fan? And why the comparison between the Bama and BYU record? And how did BYUs National Championship get into this discussion? Lets stay on track. What I said was we hear little about Alabama out here in the number two TV market. We hear more about BYU and I am sure all sports have something to do with it. The discussion has nothing to do with Alabama of the 60s and 70s. The sports world and landscape has changed since then. By the way, I am a USC Trojan fan first and I loved the Utah game!

And lets not even talk about how succesfull Ty Detmer was as a Pro.

Watch the Tide's Heisman and see how they are suppose to be as a pro.

Come on SoCalsurfer....Alabama lays claim to 13 National Championships. The NCAA also credits them with NC's in year 45, 62, 66, 67, and 77 that Alabama does not count toward the 13. So the number is 18 NC's.

BYU has 1 and that one is very debatable. BYU did not beat a single top 20 team that year (that's all they had then). They only beat 4 teams with a winning record. Of the teams they played, only 3 of them went to a bowl game and the record for the bowls was 1-2. This included the Michigan team that finished the season 6-6 and 4th place in the Big Ten. BYU scrambled to beat a very injured Michigan team by 7 points that also lost to Ohio State by 15 points, Iowa by 26 points, Michigan State by 12 points, Purdue by 2 points, and Washington by 9 points.

The built in LDS Fan Base rallied and sent thousands of letters to AP and UPI voters and shamed them into a bogus NC vote.

    So HS Sport Dude,
I live in our nations number two television market. I follow all sports very closely because sports happens to be my career. We see a ton of BYU exposure out here in this market. Thankfully a lot more exposure since BYU jettisoned the Mountain. What we see or hear nothing about in socal is Alabama. We heard of a Coach named Bear Bryant and maybe that Heisman running back a couple of years ago, but that is about it. So I think your view from Alabama of BYU is actually what you wish it was. Read todays Desnews article on school fan base, an article that this comment thread may have actually generated. I disagree with the stats in the article, I think BYU has far more fans, but I think the stats on Utah are correct. I have to laugh when some Utah fans write in like that loss Saturday will crumble BYU's firm foundation. I guess its ok for all of us to dream.

@FC: an 8-4, 9-3 Arkansas or South Carolina will consistently be better than a 10-2, 11-1 BYU. Arkansas ended up with a 4-3 record against teams ranked in the final top 25 last year, that is right, they played a third of the final top 25. BYU has never played a schedule remotely as difficult as this. LSU, Alabama, and Florida are usually a notch above theses two teams. The 2008 Sugar Bowl was considered a stunning win for Utah. When BYU played against Alabama (and lost) in the late 1990s, Alabama was at a program low point.

SEC football at the top half of the conference is a completely different quality of play that BYU has ever experienced. The football is just better down there and it is not just for 1 or 2 games, but at least 5 to 7 truly high quality opponents. I love SEC football and there is not nor has there been any point in time where BYU truly compared.

Go ahead and admit it's true, you will like it!

Ive already statedI am not a Utah Fan. I love real football played in the SEC and Alabama is my team. BYU's record against the SEC is 2 wins 4 losses. Not good. The two wins are against Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Typical bottom feeders.

Two things really matter in terms of National Attention. #1 Where you end up. #2 How many weeks in the top 25.

So....BYU from 2003 to 2010 (8 years) best season ending ranking (AP) has been #12. Not so impressive. But that Utah Team has been in the top 5 two times during the same period and beat my beloved Tide. (smashed them)

For # of Weeks in the Top 25 from 2003 to 2010 there are a total of 132 weeks. BYU has been ranked 33 of them or 25%.

    2003 0 of 16 weeks
    2004 0 of 16 weeks
    2005 0 of 16 weeks
    2006 6 of 16 weeks
    2007 4 of 16 weeks
2008 16 of 16 weeks Utah finished #2 and had a more legit argument to a NC than BYU ever had.
    2009 7 of 16 weeks
    2019 0 of 16 weeks

A question for HS Sport Dude:

The ESPN deal is based on TV sets, and there are millions of Latter-Day Saints in all 50 states. No matter where BYU goes, there are fans. When BYU games are on TV, fans watch. I don't think anyone cares what religion the fans are if they are filling stadium seats and watching games on TV.

Why is it a problem for you if BYU fans are mostly LDS? There likely are more BYU fans than fans of most other colleges around the country outside of the big teams with national followings that you listed.

Anyway, ESPN feels there are enough BYU fans to justify giving BYU a contract as an independent for eight years, no matter what religion their fans are. I guess that's all that matters.

But just out of curiosity, who is it that is telling LDS fans that they have to cheer for "God's University" as you termed it, and what is your issue with BYU fans being mostly LDS?

  • Foolish Child Syracuse, UT
    Sept. 21, 2011 5:28 p.m.

    HS Sport Dude:

"That has changed now as BYU has not really shown up in the top 25 much the last 5 years."

    BYU Final season ranks:
    2006: #20
    2007: #17
    2008: #16
    2009: #14
    2010: NR

I am not sure where you are getting your data, but your statement is completely erroneous. 4 of the past 5 seasons BYU has been ranked in the Top 25. Only last year was BYU unranked. BYU has reached as high as #8 in 2008, so the Cougars have even been a top 10 team within the past 3 years.

For all who are using the game last week to "prove that Utah is a BCS caliber team and BYU clearly is unready to play at the BCS level" just remember that some time Utah will lose to BYU. By the same logic, can the reverse conclusion be made the Utah is not up to BCS-level and BYU is?

I can already hear your excuses that Utah can have an off day, the refs made bad calls, Utah was not pumped up for a meaningless non-conference game, etc.

Remember not to make too broad of conclusions from just one game.

  • HS Sport Dude South Jordan, UT
    Sept. 21, 2011 3:01 p.m.

SoCalsurfer.....Like I stated....I traveled the entire Southeast and Northeast significantly during those years. BYU was not a national name at all. I heard many people talk about the real college football programs like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, USC, Georgia....the list goes on. Being from Utah and most people I did business knowing that, the discussion of college football and who the heck I could cheer for from Utah came up many times. Again....people that heard about BYU only remembered a few QB's that came from there. The only folks I ever talked to in the 90's and early 00's that really knew about BYU were LDS people and most of them knew very little about the fooball team other than they were suppose to cheer for "God's University".

You would have though that finding a non-LDS fan would have been more possible in those years as BYU was kinda competitive. That has changed now as BYU has not really shown up in the top 25 much the last 5 years.

I'm quite positive that any National Following for BYU is 98% LDS and 2% other or worse.

So now you're blaming Utah for the worse ratings for the Utah/BYU game?

It's not Utah's fault they kicked the living snot out of your pathetic Cougars, causing BYU members, I mean fans, to turn off their TV sets.

Oh wait, actually it was Utah's fault.

And if your contention is that Texas has more fans than Utah, thus a higher rating for that game, I think you finally said something that makes sense.

As I've said since the summer, all BYU fans have to talk about is their Exposure.

Because when they talk about what's actually happening on the football field, they have to deal with getting EXPOSED by Utah, 54-10, in the house Lavell built.

    You said:

Chow and Whigingham are both BYU throwbacks. It's won't be long before Utah gets their butts kicked all over the PAC 12. Money does not win football games, teams do. The fun is just beginning.

Any team who can't win and win big with 7 turnovers on their side should be embarrassed. All Utah did tonight was not embarrass themselves. Oh, by the way Utes the REAL score of the USC game was 23 - 14 (in case you did not hear).

I could score three times myself in this game. Utah earned points = 21.
The speed of the Pac 12 will eat Utah up.

Dude are you serious? You sound like a 3 year old throwing a fit for not getting a piece of candy.

Utah did what it was suppose to do against a sub-par opponent. Grow up and realize the world does not revolve around the Utah Valley "Bubble".

i agree about the tv deal not being just a spur the moment thing. in fact, i think it's smart business on espn's side and both sides get what they want out of the deal. if you look at byu's schedule, they're put in good time slots to get ratings and exposure, much like boise state was last year. i'm not saying they can't consistently get those ratings either i'm just trying to defend notion that people didn't tune in because byu was playing utah. i don't know exactly how the ratings system works, but u/y, on espn 2, was up against ou/fsu (abc) and miami/ohio state (espn). besides, the game was over midway through the 3rd quarter anyway

    Hey HS Sport Dude,
I can sympathize with a 1990s view from Alabama, espcially during the wac and mwc years. Do any other schools but Auburn and the Tide get any media coverage within Alabama? An ESPN deal gives a free and independent BYU the step up that a wac and mwc could never offer. A very smart win win. My view of BYU has always been from out of state and there is a blue tide rising.

    Hey Butters,
yes, hard to do battle with a Florida State vs Oklahoma game. But half of that game rating should have been achieved. The Nielsen results say a ton about actual team followings.

    hey socalsurfer,

i'll give you the higher ratings for the ole miss and texas games, but don't say the lower rating was strictly because of utah like they were some huge drop off no one was interested in. everyone else in the country was watching florida state vs oklahoma. that game received a 3.0 rating.

  • HS Sport Dude South Jordan, UT

Hi SoCalsurfer....I have to disagree with you on the National Following. I lived in Alabama from 1990 to 2006 and other than the local ward members, could not find a person that knew much about BYU. Only a few would remember some of the QB's that came during the 80's (Young, Jimmy Mac) but would also say something about "What Conference do they play in"....isn't that the weird Mormon School. In fact in my 16 years of living in the South and doing a lot of travel, I never came across a BYU fan or person that had an interest in BYU that was not a member.

Never fear Utah.....folks in the south new less about the Utes. That changed quite a bit in 2004 and 2008.

BYU does not have a National Following other than its members and there is no "storied" history. I bet you could not find 5 people in an Alabmam Walmart that would believe you when you said they won the 1984 NC. And honestly....they only played 3 teams that had a winning record...two teams that went to a bowl....no teams that finished near the top 20. Keep Dreaming

  • SoCalsurfer DANA POINT, CA

Here are some bonafide facts, without the valley-view:
Nelsen ratings for BYU-Ole Miss: 1.5 espn, for BYU-Texas, 1.6 espn2, for Utah-BYU, 0.6 espn2. In looking at BYU's first two games I can guarantee BYU was not the reason for a full Nielsen point loss in the Utah Game. One point equals about 1,200,000 us households.

BYU enjoys a national following, including members and and millions of fans. Utah doesnt bring that volume with them. And ESPN has looked at BYU Sports for three decades. It was not a flavor of the month deal!

    You're right.

    2005 Fiesta Bowl

    2009 Sugar Bowl

SolCalsurfer is right, Utah was in the right place at the right time when the PAC took their grab at the Big 12 last year, and only got CU.

Now the entire landscape is imploding, and it may appear that Utah will be the only pre-2010 non-AQ to make it into the new super-conferences structure.

  • williary Kearns, UT
    Sept. 20, 2011 8:49 a.m.

    Some facts:

ESPN signed a deal with BYU because outside of the weekly WAC Friday night game, and one single Pac-12 football game a week on Saturday night, they are completely shutout of big time football on the West coast. And with ESPN darling Boise now on the MTN, take what you can get if you're ESPN.

And if you believe that a guy as intelligent as Larry Scott would add Utah and Colorado to simply throw them a bone, with no benefit to the conference, you must also believe that Santa Claus just may leave you a new "Quest to Not Let Utah Destroy Us Again" t-shirt under the tree this year.

Like I said, BYU has many members all over the country. Who will turn a BYU game on, have no clue what's happening, pay no attention to the game, and will either ignore the result if it's bad, or will celebrate if it's positive.

    Members, not fans.

I am sure his spin would be much the same as other BYU fans that the cougs gave the game away but they still have superior athletes, the best recruits, the best facilities that money can buy and a huge national fan base. The funny thing is only BYU fans believe that spin because Chip Brown's sources are telling him that Texas does not want to rebuild the Big 12 with the likes of teams like BYU. But anyway, Veritas, thanks for manning up regarding your outlook of the game.

Hey williary, I expected the skewed responses from local ute fans. Traveling once in awhile can help one make an accurate judgement. And, the Utes do just fine in drawing fans from those LDS meeting houses as well. Where do most Ute fans and contributors actually come from?

BYU draws fans on the road. Far more than Utah. ESPN studied this out for years. So ESPN inked the broadcast deal with BYU because of a strong national following and fan base. It was a good business decision, finalized not because of emotion and gut feel, but because of real numbers, numbers Utah just does not have. One very weird rivalry game isnt enough to shake the foundation of a win win television deal.

Finally, in my opinion Utah and Colorado needed the Pac12 more than the Pac10 needed Utah and Colorado. It was a very very fortunate window of opportunity for both schools

ESPN doesnt care about one game. And really, much of this game had some amazing hits, some real excitement and solid drama to it. Much of the game made for good television.

As Cougar fans have been touting since last Spring...

Cougar fans favorite word since the Utah Pac-12 invite has been exposure. And they got exactly what they've been asking for:

On Saturday, BYU was EXPOSED as a BCS-caliber wannabe.

Take note recruits. As long as you're comfortable being second fiddle in your own state, and having your season relegated to nothing after week #2, BYU is the place for you.

The red flag is Bronco's constant reminders of how ---Byu football is different and serves other purposes---. Bronco, WE ALREADY KNOW THAT, we are aware that BYU is owned by the LDS Church, we know, we know. For you to repeat it as much as you do makes me think that it is being used as a built in excuse to accept losing when it happens.

    Great win Utes!!!

Y fans- saying that you just gave the game away and the U didn't do anything to deserve it, that's the reason most of us despise you guys, you aren't accountable for anything! Man up and admit you were beaten by a better, more prepared, better coached team with more heart last night!

    Sept. 18, 2011 11:48 p.m.

Heaps will never be a high performing QB because his throwing motion is fundamentally flawed. Pay close attention to how the ball travels on throws between 10-30 yards. The nose is up, which causes the ball to sail, resulting in "over throws". He has been taught to finish his throws in the hallway resulting in leaving his hips open with no snap of the wrist. When under pressure, his mecanically flawed technique is painfully obvious. Its time to red-shirt this kid and fix his delivery if he's going to be the great hope Doman thinks he can be.

As for Doman; I'm not dure the pie he has eaten over the last three games will humble his arrogance! Dang good college player, not too good of a coach (though Bronco thinks he's the best QB coach in the country). The best QB/OC coach in college football history was at LES on Saturday night, but he was wearing red!

    Lots of work boys!

I don't know which is more surprising, the final score or how quickly byu "fans" will turn on their team. byu got killed because they couldn't hold onto the ball, not because they were out coached. Utah's defense just overpowered byu's offense.

    I disagree

Not holding the ball high-and-tight or with two hands inside the five? Coaching should've drilled that out of them.

Not falling on a fumbled snap anywhere near the end zone? Ditto.

Not falling on a muffed kick at the goal line with 11 players bearing down on you? Double Ditto.

Not being in the booth? Coaching error.

Taking too long in the huddle? Reflects coaching and pace of practice.

I don't have a beef with the defense breaking down late. They've had their finger in the dike for 3 games. The gave out, they didn't give up.

I have a beef with is preventable errors, and though the players, not the coaches, committed most of them, it is the HC's job to prepare them, not coast the last days of fall camp. Fans are tired of preseason rhetoric, post game excuses.

A couple of observations. One Heaps looks like he is terrified of getting heat and Bronco has no fire or passion on the sideline. He just sort of stares off into space it seems like.

On the other hand Kyle yelled at his kicker when he missed the PA when it was 30 to 10. He looked right at him and said "What is wrong with you." I was dying of laughter. Kyle shows emotion and passion.

    Hey Pack 12 proud,
You are mistaken when you say, "Sports at byu is not missionary work", you are technically correct. However, BYU is an LDS school and that school is required to uphold all the standards the LDS church lives by. The mission of the LDS church is to bring people unto Christ. They do this by teaching the gospel, serving others and setting a good example just like the Savior would. There fore, when the BYU football team puts more importance on a fireside where the gospel is being taught or do not put the same importance in the result of a win compared to a lose but instead focuses on how they played the game, means they are trying to live by the standards that have been set forth by the church and the Savior. In other words, they are indeed performing missionary work.

The game was pathetic, and I'm a Ute fan. But I expect a lot more from BYU. The one thing I find interesting is that the Cougar's hardest hitting and most punishing runner was moved to the defense, and other than kick returns he didn't even play until the game was a lost cause. Hey Mendenhall! Here me now and do as you are commanded. Put Mike Hague back on offense and build a running game, for crying out loud! Sadly, it will probably never happen. DiLuigi is a great runner, but he's not the whole answer. You also need a fast power runner, and that's Hague. He's a team player so he'll play where you tell him, but on this one you got it all wrong. You are wasting some great talent, and you have no running game. If that was Brandon's idea, then it was one of the first of his many mistakes. Brandon may be a great QB coach, but he's far from ready as the OC. Give Mike the ball! By the way, Nelson showed 10X the spirit and guts as Heaps, so maybe there's hope to come, but don't waste Hague.

BYU's season is not over yet.

    Dear BYU fans,

After seeing so many of my Y-fan friends in deep depression today, and hearing so many people calling for jobs and jumping ship, I have to say the following in all sincerity:

You guys really, REALLY need to stop expecting to go to a BCS bowl every single pre-season. It just isn't justified. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the football team themselves (or Bronco himself) having the highest of goals. But the team's goals and the fan's loudly advertised expectations should not be the same thing. We've actually been there. Twice. And we still do not expect it every single year. This is why we make it through blowouts like we suffered last season.

Your ship is not sinking, one train wreck doesn't change the fact that BYU is still a great program. Just be more realistic on years you have teams that are unproven and over hyped. You'll be happier fans, and will seem less annoying and more credible in the eyes of other fan bases. Go luck with the remainder of your season.

I don't know much about this "Band of Brothers" stuff, or any 'higher calling' as mentioned and lampooned in several posts here, but does anyone remember back when BYU's offense could score three touchdowns in a single quarter?

    Those were good times.

This year's offense has taken three games to score three touchdowns. Something is clearly wrong, and right now, I'll point the finger at Doman. If he is really a smart and talented OC, it's time for him to get off the sideline and up in the press box where he can see the whole field to make adjustments. If Jake Heaps still needs his hand held on the sideline by Doman the QB coach, it's time to see what a different QB can do.

  • Mormon Ute Kaysville, UT

Please don't disrespect the Utes by claiming this win is any less impressive because of BYU's poor play. Leading up to this season and even this game it BYU fans were all about national titles, Heaps for Heisman, and Doman for OC of the year. Now that has all come crashing down, but rather than admit the Utes are just simply better than you thought we were you'll throw your boys under the bus. Nice.

  • Mr. Schneebly Syracuse, UT
    Sept. 18, 2011 3:16 p.m.

My family left the stadium early because BYU completely gave up. The majority of the Ute fans seated near me last night at LES were screaming profanities all game long and were just plain unpleasant to be around. Even the Utes band was in on the poor conduct, watching the BYU band and launching into song every time they started to play.

Bad environment in the stadium, bad football game getting whipped by our rivals at home, especially bad effort by BYU on the field. Bad night to be on national TV showcasing our newly-independent brand.

BYU needs to fix some things fast: Bench Heaps and give Lark a chance. Put Doman on a very short leash and hold him accountable for averaging one offensive touchdown per game. Fix the running game: 0.5 yards per carry is not going to win ANY games. Most of all, hold EVERYONE accountable for quitting before the third quarter was over. There is no excuse for giving up. Ever. I predict nothing will hurt BYU in the long run as much as being a team that doesn't have the will to finish games, even if we are losing.

Didn't you learn from last year about the mistake of claiming your oponent didn't really win the game in spite of what the final score says? BYU was outplayed and to downplay that by claiming they gave the game to us is not being honest. The Utes played well. Many of the miscues by BYU were caused by the play of our team. Yes, if someone leads 13-7 late in a game and their defense is playing very well and they lay the ball down in the end zone and lose 14-13 you can claim they gave the game away. However, let's look at some stats from last night outside the turnovers... Utah 481 yards of offense, Utah 242 yards rushing, Utah 239 yards passing. You can't figure that out yourself?

    Well let met help...

    1) Utah's offense came alive against a so called good defense: 481 yards (over 200 rushing with over 7 yards per carry).

    2) BYU's rush game was crushed by the Ute defense. Total yards 11 with 22 carries which is 0.5 yards per carry. For comparisons against the mighty SEC defense BYU was 2.9 per carry, against the mighty Big 12 defense BYU was 1.9 per carry.

    3) Out coached, out hustled, and out played even with a injured QB.

This Blowout is a direct reflection on some very poor coaching and the A D Administration...

First, Doman should never have been promoted to a Divion I O C job so quickly (particularly for a program with as much expectation as there exists at BYU). He should have been a position coach for a couple more years and treated as an Assistant O C under a well Tenured Division I O C who's had success with the West Coast Offense.

Second, Mendenhall needs to start acting a little more like a coach and a little less like a General Authority.

Third, we need a new QB, one that is less cocky and more of a "show you" type of player rather than a "tell you" type.

Lastly, we might need a New A D, one who is better connected with other schools in the NCAA, and one who is a better Strategist.IMHO most of Holmoes moves have been bad these past few years. We had no business going Independent and exposing America to this reality.

I don't get how people can give the Utes credit? What exactly did they do to win the game? It was much more about BYU giving them everything to them in a nicely wrapped present. How many fumbles did BYU give up on in the end-zone or within 5 yards of it? I seriously lost count. Give the Utes credit? It would be tough for even Kanab high school not to win that game in convincing fasion with all those gimmies. BYU completely took themselves out of the game. No, this game was not about Utah being a good team. It is much more about BYU being completely unprepared. Their football program is an emparasement now because they continue to insist on making football into a church thing. If you're going to have a football team, focus on football. Mendenhal is a cancer and I've said it from the beginning. My bishop would be a better coach than Bronco and Broncon would be a better church leader than my bishop! We need someone who will do their job and leave the church duties to church leaders!

"We were out-coached, out-played and out-executed from beginning to end." Ya, ya think? Maybe it's time to stop planning for all the pre-game firesides and spend your time preparing and coaching your team. That was rediculous. Utah was not the better team, BYU was simply not prepared and made too many unforced mistakes. Utah didn't force hardly any of them. BYU gave them to them and it took them out of their game for the entire second half. I'm a BYU fan that is starting to get a little tired of Bronco and full-time preachor/part-time football coach mentality. Memo to Mendenhal...leave the religious duties to church leaders and start focusing your time on coaching and preparing your team.

As a Cougar fan, I was embarrassed last night. While the offense and special teams were useless, it really did look like the defense quit. BYU better right the ship or they won't make their bowl game.

At least my church Ute buddies took it easy on us today...even they felt sympathy.

But you know what - I think this BYU team will respond. The coaches and players want to win more than any of the whining fans on this board. This was one game, and it counted for one loss, whether by 44 points or 1. I wish our fans would show more class and support. Clearly this season is a disappointment no matter how they finish, and nobody will have the foolish optimism going into next year, but BYU is a good program and has recruited good players of late, and I think that 2-3 years from now, we'll be back to celebrating again.

Two blowouts in one year! USU turned out to be much worse than they looked in routing BYU and Utah will wind up looking just as bad when they play their new conference. Robert Anae and Jaime Hill are both gone and the problems remain. Bench Heaps, give Nelson the ball and start looking for replacements for Bronco
Novocaine Mendenhall and Brandon Inept Doman. Another wasted season and more wasted talent. They have money, facilities and players, what they don't have is coaches.

Mendenhall and Doman have been coaching the Y for the past 7 years, and they have brought some pride back into the program, and resurrected the program from the dead. However, after embarassing games like last night, where their team was outplayed and outcoached, the question does have to come up--do we let them go?

Personally, I'd like to see Mendenhall stay--he's a class act. Even though this is Doman's first season as offensive coordinator, I think there must be questions about him. Bronco called him out once, already, this season, and this is how Doman and his offense responded. The Cougs offense did look great in the 2nd quarter, but they were subpar the other three quarters and 7 giveaways shows lack of preparation and intensity.

BYU looked tired and out of shape in the 4th quarter. Maybe a lot of it was just superior physical conditioning (you know "paying the price" in the gym and in practices). I'd like to know if others have noticed this when the cougs play quick, physically fit teams.

Coach Mendenhall: Please stop the excuses and comparisons of the BYU boosters to Pharisees - Save it for Sunday School. I dare say that after your comments and the performance of BYU this week, donations to BYU football will probably drop like a stone; Well done coach. This is a tough business grow a backbone, stand up and take responsibility, or get out.

    Sept. 18, 2011 12:46 p.m.

Jake Heaps should consider going on a mission after the season. It would help him mature mentally. He could use a redshirt year when he returns to get back into it and would probably be a much better quarterback his junior and senior year than he would be otherwise. Doman will also be more experienced then and should be a better offensive coordinator/coach.

I was most shocked by BYU's lack of offensive fundamentals in the game. Any running back who takes a hand-off at the 3 yard line to power into the end zone should have two hands wrapped around the ball. Inexcusable. On any running play the ball should at least be tucked high and tight (BYU needs to watch film of Mark Ingram when he was at Alabama.) When a ball is fumbled on the ground (Heaps and Falslev) you immediately dive on it. You don't try to pick it up, run with it, throw it, etc. Poor, poor offensive fundamentals.

The DN Censors are alive and well today. BYU needs a head coach that wants to win football games, as "Pragmatic" correctly points out the focus is not on winning football games. The firesides are a good idea on the road, but not the night before a game. 'x' points out that he would like to see Bronco 'lose his temper', you can be sure during the halftime of the Texas game their coach let them know they needed to play better football. I'm would hope the players want to win and put in a lot of effort in that direction, but BYU needs a head coach with the same attitude. Instead he criticizes his supporters.

Ducky, Captain L, and the rest,

I told you after the 2010 spring scrimmage Heaps was not the guy. Nice throwing mechanics and stats produced in a spring camp do not translate into game time ability. The fact that Heaps had a PR guy, that he was out of shape and avoided the weight room and that he was intensely disliked by a number of teammates spoke volumes about his readiness to lead a D1 school. He's selfish and he thinks he knows it all.

But, BYU fans and coaches were blinded by the Scout.com ranking and even after his mediocre performance last year, he was annointed the starter and there was no competition in 2011. Doman and Mendenhall weren't even decent enough to give Lark a release, when he realized there would be no real competition and asked for one.

So the one guy with actual D1 ability rides the bench and BYU's chickens have come home to roost. Good luck guys. You got what you asked for.

As a long time CougarClub booster who has invested a lot of time, money, and devotion to my alma mater, I have these thoughts:

This team lacks a winning attitude. Sure, they can talk a lot of hype, and positive mental attitude cliches (mingled with scripture), but they don't back it up with action. Attitude reflects leadership. This bad attitude is the fault of the coaching staff, and is the same bad attitude evident in Bronco's calling us (boosters) "Pharisees" for wanting some accountability. Bronco forgot (deliberately?) that this is a football team first and foremost, not a band of missionary brothers who just happen to play football. Like Collie, this team really does seem to believe the lie that success on the field comes from living "righteously" off the field, instead of from hard work, discipline, brilliant preparation, focused execution, and heart.

    some bright spots:

To put up 343 passing yards against the Utes, with NO running game to keep defensive backs honest, is impressive. We moved the ball and moved the sticks almost as good as the U, and our 3rd down efficiency was better.

I gave away season tickets. They want to give them back.

  • patriot Cedar Hills, UT
    Sept. 18, 2011 12:08 p.m.

I really don't think this outcome was all that shocking to be honest. Utah is well coached and BYU isn't. Kyle would never put up with 7 turn overs - never - but Bronco seems lost - much like Crowton - on how to fix this broken program. He fires assistants and rotates new ones in and things just get worse. I don't know if Doman is good or bad because the BYU O-line is SOOOO pathetic and the BYU running backs are third stringers on most teams at best. My gut feel is that Doman is actually REALLY good but the talent he has to work with is so awful and sub par. Heaps is a really good QB - you can tell with his arm strength and touch but I think he tries to do too much sometimes to compensate for the ZERO running game and when you become a one dimensional offense you are in BIG trouble. BYU has good receivers but again the lack of a running attack is killing them. Every time the Y does get a good running back he is kicked out of school (Unga). Well, this is going to be a long season for sure.

To Tom Holmoe: This is ultimately your responsibility. What have you done to BYU football? As an executive in private business, if I showed this kind of performance Id be on probation, or fired. I dont expect any team to win every game, but the performance against Utah was a joke. It showed a clear lack of focus, discipline and desire to win. Generating that in a team is the job of the head coach. Coach Mendenhall seems to think he is a mission president, not a football coach. Please bring him back to reality, or let him go. The BYU football program is clearly not ready to compete at the BCS level. Programs like Utah, Boise State, and TCU have left BYU behind. You obviously underestimated the programs maturity level. Now youve taken BYU independent, and the weakness of the football program will be visible every week on national television. Thanks a lot for the recognition. Maybe you should consider a career change also.
And as for me, Im now a Utah fan. GO UTES !!

To Coach Mendenhall: After seeing the comments you made to the BYU boosters, and then watching the team dismantled by Utah, it seems that maybe you were preparing everyone for what was to come. Please, spare us your attempts to rationalize the situation. It is true that BYU football is unique because of the high standards required of the staff and players. However, to say that you and the team have a higher mission sounds like youre trying to justify mediocrity. Ive got news for you, there are already thousands of young men who spend each day of their lives bringing attention to the LDS church. They are called missionaries. Unlike you, they labor for free. If your mission is truly first and foremost to represent the LDS church, then please stop taking that huge salary from BYU and do it voluntarily like everyone else. Sanity check - you are being paid a huge salary to win football games using young men who adhere to the standards of the university, period.

To Brandon Doman: Ive been following BYU football for 20 years, and I dont think Ive ever seen an offense as pathetic as what youve delivered. Were not in fantasy land anymore Brandon. Your pre-season banter about how good the BYU offense would be this year was clearly delirium on your part. Obviously, you are way out of your league. With years of practice maybe you can be a good offensive coordinator, but not now. After the Texas game, the Texas defensive players noted how they learned where the throws would go by halftime, which allowed them to shut BYU down in the second half. With an offense as predictable as yours, you just as well give the opposing defense your playbook prior to game time. I beg you not to put BYU fans through the pain of watching your completely predictable, boring, lab experiment offense the rest of this season. Please do the honorable thing, admit youre in way over your head, take responsibility, and resign.

The two teams are on different paths Utah getting stronger year by year, and BYU sinking into obscurity. Good luck the rest of this year and in the future as you compete for further BCS recognition. With Utah State also rising, it seems that BYU will take its place by the side of Weber State.

To the BYU defense: I feel sorry for you. Having half a football team is no fun, Im sure. Considering that BYU has absolutely no offense, youve held up as best you can. Sorry, but it seems that youll probably be on the field for most of the remaining games this season.

    Cougar Fans,

I know it hurts. I still FEEL Utah's loss in the NC to Kentucky, Utah's losses to ND and TCU last year. But you've got to be better, more loyal fans.

Calling for Coach Mendenhall's job? Really? ESPN informed the audience that he has the 8th best winning percentage over his head coaching career.

Calling for Doman's job? After THREE games?

Just a month ago, most of you were telling anyone who would listen that Heaps would be great this season. Heaps is a true sophomore, not another post red-shirt, post mission 23 year old quarterback that you have taken for granted for decades. He will make mistakes, but he has potential. Are you going to give up on him already?

Many of you have been talking about EXPOSURE. What was exposed on ESPN was a less than capacity crowd that headed early for the exits. Nice!

Bottom line - nothing went your way last night. You were outcoached and outplayed, and the breaks went against you. That happens sometimes. Of course you're frustrated, but a lot of you are spouting crazy talk!

Have faith, stay the course, etc.

I think we can now understand why Whittingham was BYU's 1st choice and Bronco was the 3rd or 4th. He better start teaching our young men a little personal accountability or it will get worse. Press conferences where he takes all the blame aren't helpful. I remember Whittingham after the Montana State game saying "our offense is awful. We play like that and we won't win a game in the PAC 12." Come on Bronco, challenge someone on our team to take a little responsibility(Mr. Heaps).

After seeing what Vanderbilt did to Ole Miss yesterday, I am one that wasn't that surprised at the outcome of the game. The score, yes, the outcome, no. All the Utes had to do was incorporate everything that Texas did in the 2nd half last week and they would win. It seems they did just that.

  • Wildcat O-town, UT
    Sept. 18, 2011 11:40 a.m.

Congrats to the Utes. That was quite a statement! I think BYU fans should have known the game was going to be bad when the snap went over the head of Heaps and he did his best three stooges impression and could not throw it away or dive on it for a safety.

I think Doman panicked early. I don't think they had to abandon the run game when they went down by two possessions early in the second half. The more you can take the game out of the decision-making of Heaps, the better. Still Doman doesn't have a good QB to work with, so I don't know you can ask for his job, yet.

Remember many BYU fans tried to run Lavell out early, turned their back on Chow after all the illustrious years he was apart of (how is that working for you?). You can't keep changing coordinators like a pair of socks and think it is going to work, or draw talent to come coach for you. It's fun to get to know the entire QB depth chart at BYU from the comments board by the third week, but some sanity needs to prevail.

They will probably need to win at least one of these games to go to a bowl game.

Bad losses, even to rivals happen. BYU looked unprepared. But what got me and Bronco needs to address this is bad, his team gave up. They held White in check until the fourth quarter. Unlike some of my brethren, I never believed the Cougs had much of a shot at going undefeated this year. They are too young and they are playing a tougher schedule than they did in the MWC. But I believed they were capable of a 9 or 10 win season.

Many teams never rebound from a loss like this. If BYU doesn't rebound next week, a winning season may be out of the question.

    Game changers.

The bad snap. Heaps needs to fall on the ball or kick it out of the end zone. Giving up 2 points is better than 7. Heaps looks like he's afraid of getting hit. He may have talent, but he lacks heart.

DiLuigi's fumble inside the 5 yard line. DiLuigi does not run well between the tackles. I don't know why we continue to try. Use him on sweeps or options or catching the ball out of the backfield. Use Kariya up the middle. Nelson should be brought in for situations like this.

Uale's pass interference penalty on 3rd down. Completely uncalled for by Uale. The pass was not catchable.

Falslev's muff. The straw that broke the camel's back. Cougs gave up after this.

To all the BYU fans RIPPING their own team: Lighten up. This happens. I remember sitting in the North end zone up at Rice stadium in 1988 and watching BYU (a 3 touchdown favorite) get destroyed by the Utes 57-28. The coach was LaVell Edwards. The Offensive coordinator was Norm Chow. And for a lot of the game, the QB was Ty Detmer. That was the worst game I have ever been to. But, believe it or not, things got MUCH better the next season.

Quit ripping on Heaps, Doman, and especially Mendenall. Mendenhall brought the program back from disaster. Last night was a debacle, no doubt. But BYU will be back and sometime down the road, do the same thing to Utah. It's football. That's how it works. So crack open a Diet Coke, drown your sorrows, and get ready for next week.

And by the way, Utah, don't think that every team is going to give you the ball SEVEN times.

I was at the game last night and was completely embarrassed for our team. More than the lack of preparation, abandonment of fundamentals, turnovers, no adjustments, missed assignments, trying to do too much, two things bothered me more than anything:

    1. Pride - one example gets in the way. When 30-10, BYU's kick returner turns to the crowd angrily to try to get us pumped up, almost like "how dare you not cheer for us" all the way up to about 3 seconds before the kickoff. And what does the do? Muff the kickoff! How about you concentrate on your assignment and we'll do ours!

    2. Quit - the team just quit. So much for Tradition, Spirit, Honor.

Absolutely humiliating to have Ute fans singing "nah nah nah nah hey hey hey goodbye" to you in your own stadium.

    Refund please!

I have to say, cougar fans seem to have finally come back to earth. It seems all year they were trying to downplay the utes move to the pac 12, like somehow going independent was an equal counter-move. However, after tonight I think the difference in recruiting is no longer debatable. How much faster was the utah defense? How much faster were utah's receivers & running backs? How much stronger were our O & D lines? Talent is important, coaching is important, having both is the key.

One more thought. A lot of the hype during the off season centered around BYU having so many returning starters. Maybe that wasn't such a positive thing after all. I was always puzzled why having returning players from a 7-5 team was such a positive. As we look at the games so far this season, things are looking shockingly similar to last season. Hopefully for BYU's sake this can be the USU game for this year and you can turn things around from here.

As a fan of BYU, I am disappointed and embarrassed! As a player, I would be thinking about hanging it up. It's one thing to lose big to a rival, which I am fine with if you give it your all, but to go out and give up playing after being down 20 is ridiculous. This team needs to reevaluate where its heart is because right now, I don't see much at all. These two teams are not that far apart.

    Sept. 18, 2011 8:44 a.m.

Utah beat BYU as they left the MWC as a little goodbye gift. Bronco made excuses and even stated that "the best team didn't win". Bronco then stated they were going for a National Championship, Jake Heaps is a Heisman candidate the BYU boosters were "saducees and pharisees" etc...

Now Utah just beat BYU tremendously in the new PAC 12 UTE and Independent BYU era. Do you see the common denominator of problems here? BRONCO and BYU FOOTBALL HYPE. ALL TALK and NO WALK.

I love BYU as an outstanding University... but dang Bronco you are making it hard to like the football team and you as the head coach. I totally respect Whittingham and his "Shut-up and play one game at a time" philosophy...Its working.

I have a lot of friends who are BYU fans and I know they've got to be hurting this morning. To them I say, I feel for you. As a fan I know what it's like to have expectations trounced by a bad loss or two.

BYU has talented people running their program. Before this game they didn't seem to be thinking changes needed to be made. For the sake of your program and its future I hope this game helps them realize they need to make changes. I'm not saying personnle need to be changed, but obviously what's being done either in preparation or during the game isn't working. In three consecutive games they do okay in the first half and then the wheels seem to come off in the second half. BYU's second half has gotten progressively worse each game. That's got to be fixable.

I remember Coach Witt's first season at Utah. Things were not going well the first couple of games. Coach Witt called every coach and player into his office for a personal chat to figure out what needed to be done. Things got much better from there. Maybe Bronco could learn from that.

54-10 - It was like watching a Sophomore high school (Utah is not that good) team VS. a 7th grade (BYU offense and Special teams) team, except 7th graders have less turnovers - there are some teams that have less turnovers in a whole season. Hey Doman, go upstairs like every other O coordinator. Yes, you will miss out on a couple chest bumps and bum pats when Opo scores the only BYU touchdown for you every game. Heaps is like watching a 6th grader with ADHD! Take a Ritalin and chill. There is zero continuity on offense, but a lot of selfishness. Heaps, be a leader and talk to your team, instead of glaring out in the field. Watch the Defense and learn how to come together!

UGHH, it's last year all over again and UCF is a lot better that Utah and Utah State . . . 1-4 is very likely. It's a good thing Idaho St is coming to town. However, I heard they took a JV team to OT. Good luck, that was awful and embarrassing. At least you looked great on ESPN and Utah, dont brag, you guys were handed this win.

Where was the leadership among the Cougars?

Some talent and coaching disparities were painfully obvious: Utah's defense probably is the fastest the Y might face all season, and the Cougar offense--starting with the OC and quarterback--had no clever answers with play-calling, no heroic performances with the pass.

    But leadership?

Nobody on the blue team seemed to show it--not the coaches, and certainly not the quarterback. Even when you're getting pasted somebody has to step forward to keep the team focused, committed, resolved to at least play for pride . . . to do SOMETHING well.

Utah's game against TCU last year was similar to last night's. The Utes were outgunned and started to come apart--back-to-back penalties, a little deer-in-the-headlights creeping across the players' faces, getting mauled by a fast, superior defense. But Whittingham's team preparation and physical presence--charisma--prevented complete meltdown.

Last night Bronco looked like he was forcing himself to watch a chess tournament that was putting him to sleep.

But from a diehard Ute fan: Don't give up BYU. Figure this out, and get back up. You have a lot of season left.

I too was a BYU fan. But since they got rid of Coach Anae and Mark Atuaia last year, my loyalty started to slip especially reflecting what happened about 10 years ago when Coach Chow after 26 years at BYU got rejected for being the next Head Coach. Then they removed Jared Afalava's scholarship within a few weeks of Jared's commment on Deseret News that he was leaning towards the Utes or the Ducks, my loyalty slipped even bigger. Imagine, removing a scholarship from a 17 year old kid who was just being honest about what he was thinking. On top of that, BYU told him during BYU Camp when all Jared wanted to do was hang out with his Kahuku childhood friends from Hawaii. Then listeining to Coach Whittingham and Coach Sitake testimony of the Gospel in a recent fireside and last nights game, I am done. Like Chow, it is a new ERA!!!! I think the thing that is the most upsetting to me is how the whole team gave up so early in the game. This team needs to look at this and figure this out.

Now, this team has a choice to make, either this will be a stepping stone or a stumbling block for the rest of the year. You have to decide now on how to react to this.

To a BYU fan, the whole game was like a very terrible train wreck in slow motion and I bet it was the same for the team and coaches.

The defense played well - Until They Gave Up. The offense, well, needs some special help.

This team needs to be dressed down by Bronco The coaching staff needs it also. Also, the players do not need to be talking to the media anymore.

Bronco, it is time to take the lead on this team among the coaches and direct them on what to do. It looks like some of the coaches are in a bit above their heads. If the coaches need to learn, then teach them.

    Go Cougars!

Been a Cougar fan since 1974. That was the first time I've seen them give up and the first time I ever left a game early. I'll always watch and support my team as long as they are giving they're best effort. That clearly didn't happen last night. Apparently I wasn't the only one who felt that way. The score was 40-10 when I left along with droves of other Cougar fans including Lavell and Patty Edwards.

Last year Bronco fired Jaime Hill after the USU game. Is he going to fire himself this year? Drastic changes need to be made because this is a team that is clearly not prepared to compete with quality competition. Maybe hire an experienced OC to be a "Co-Coordinator" like Texas did. Maybe hire an experienced DC so that Bronco can concentrate on being HC. Maybe hire a new HC and demoting Bronco to DC. Maybe benching Heaps and giving Lark a shot. Maybe making the offense more creative and less predictable like we were promised. Do SOMETHING different because what you're doing now isn't working! Not sure I'll keep going to games this year if changes aren't made.

I love how after each time Utah punches BYU right in the mouth with one of thier scores Bronco just stands there holding up his PAT signal. Well, perhaps, just perhaps, things did not go well at the Lord's University because the Lord does not care who wins as the Lord has many universities and colleges.

Utah's victory is the direct result of what each player on the field did. Utah caused the fumbles, Utah recovered the fumbles, Utah intercepted a pass, Utah scored off that interception. Utah scored touchdowns and made field goals. Utah defense but a blanket on the Y's offense. Norm Chow is a better OC than Brandon Doman. It is the Utes victory. They did not win because of what the other team did not do, they won because of what they did.

This is a Utah victory! Period.

How is BYU leaving the MWC different than Utah leaving the MWC?

BYU did NOTHING to Utah State or the WAC. Nevada and Fresno State, two schools who were part of negotiating an agreement with BYU LEFT the WAC, nullifying the deal. If there was dishonesty on anyone's part, it was those two schools. Once they left, the WAC option was no longer the same. I wouldn't be surprised if you've posted making fun of BYU's "WAC" schedule. Fully invested, "Greater calling?"

The problem is, Bronco thinks his calling is to TALK, not to perform. So do his players. I, for one, wanted the players to quit the "great offensive line," "Talented receivers," "Top ten receiver group" (last year's saying), talk not just this year, but EVERY year.

I'll give you a little quote from 3 Nephi:

"And ye see that I have commanded that none of you should go away, but rather have commanded that ye should come unto me, that ye might FEEL and SEE; even so shall ye do unto the world; and whosoever breaketh this commandment suffereth himself to be led into temptation."

See, some people think Jesus was about sermons and "firesides," but he didn't say, "Let me talk a good game," he said, "Watch me, touch my wounds. I'll SHOW you who I am."

Ironically, Kyle Whittingham and the Ute's LDS players and coaches may give the LDS Church more "exposure" because of how they perform.

Looking back on the past spring and summer I don't blame the BYU fans for their bragging. I hope Bronco realizes how important it is to recognize your opponents efforts when they beat you instead of claiming your team was still the best team, even though your lost. I can bet that quote from him was on the bulletin board in the Ute's locker room and the Utes put an exclamation point on last year's win just to make sure he understands what the final score means.

A few comments here somehow are trying to make it out to seem that points off turnovers are somehow not as credible and other points. Give me a break. That's like saying Kyle Van Noy's game winning touchdown against Ole Miss somehow should be discounted.

Last week Branco wore a t-shirt that read "Band of Brothers." Next week , he should wear one that reads, "I'm with stupid."

I bet the BYU team members won't find dates for the next two weeks. Even the ones who are married.

Nope, this one is easy so thanks for the whooping, now I can focus on other things along with saving money because i will not send byu another penny. Good luck the rest of the year utes and hope to win every game from here on out. Clearly, the better team got invited to the PAC 12 and also won the game tonight. Congrats again.

BYU's BIG problem (Coaches, Players, Fans)= You get too high when things are good, you get too low when things are bad!

*Players strut arouned like they just won the Super Bowl after every routine football play. Hey defenders, you are supposed to stop the play!! Wynn's bad throw does not mean you made a good play!!!

    *Players gave up!!!

*Doman- Running around the sideline like he just threw the TD to Apo!!! Get in the booth and focus on calling the game! When the D is on the field, that's a good time to prepare for the next series, not chest bump the whole sideline!! Seriously!!! Doman, you are not a player anymore, K!!!

*Fans- well, read the 140 prior comments!!!

Yes, football is an emotional game, but you must also act like you have been there before and you did what you were supposed to do!! Don't Quit!!!

Finally, Bronco has some great characteristics, but he makes Bill Belichick look like an out-of-control, emotional, crazy man!!!

Keep your heads up, Cougar fans.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you get in a downward spiral and you lose a game big. Utah has laid a few eggs, too, in their history.

Yes, the Utah D had some great plays in stripping the ball/turnovers but it's impossible to ignore that there were many times we simply GAVE Utah the ball (3rd play of the game, anyone?)

In the first half I saw MANY hits by BYU's D that will make highlight reels for years to come (the endzone collision that popped off that Utes helmet?.....and, no, I don't think he intended to do that/no flag was a good call).

Where I thought we lost it was the Utes 60+ yard drive right before the half where they scored the TD to go ahead. They looked exceptionally sharp and our D didn't seem to have an answer to their ability to move the ball from that point on.

Changes will have to be made. For one, I have no idea as to why your OC thinks he can play call better from the ground. Bronco showing enthusiasm would be good, too.

    Go Cougars!

Go Utes! Amazing game. I want to compliment the Cougars (not being sarcastic). I thought they handled the beat down well. I am sure they will brush this off and have a great season going forward. We all know that the game would have been very different without the turnovers (although, that is of course part of the game). I thought Wynn looked better--still not up to his potential. It was getting pretty embarassing by the end. I was wanting the game to end almost as bad as the Y fans toward the end when it sort of turned into a joke. This is one to remember. Great job Utes! Y fans, we know how these blow outs feel. I wish you well in the rest of the season. I will say (and I am not trying to rub it in) that I think it would be easier for Y fans if there was not always so much hype and impossibly high expectations every year. You just can't start talking about BCS bowls in August and September and then expect to not be disappointed down the road. As I noted, I'm sure you will finish strong. GO UTES!!

Wow, that was definitely a unique game between the in-state rivals. No one expected this. As much as I loved the beat down, I still feel bad for certain BYU players. Especially the kid who botched the kickoff return. No one likes to disappoint your teammates with big mistakes. However I don't feel bad for Heaps, he ran his mouth more than anyone and is eating serious humble pie right now.

I seriously want to hear from Duckhunter. There is some serious crow to be eaten. Other Cougar trolls don't bother me so much because I know they are just trolling and contributing playful banter, but Duckhunter is dead serious in all of his posts and is NEVER wrong.

John White is a stud and I love watching him. I like our team, I really do. We have some great athletes and we should be in for some good football teams in the future. Hopefully this game gave Wynn some confidence. If he can eliminate these silly mistakes and gain some confidence then I like him at the helm.

Most points gifted to another team in BYU history? Heaps has scored more for the other team than he has for BYU combined all year! Offense is pitiful under Doman, makes you wonder why they fired Anae after BYU finished so strong last year??? The most embarrassing part is that after a few unlucky turnovers and gifts gave the game away, this team just folded and made it look even worse!

The Defense will still get them some wins provided the offense doesn't gift 31 points to every team, but I am not so sure Heaps and Doman have what it takes to win games on the offensive side against good teams???

BYU fans were all so READY to get rid of Anae and get Doman. So how about now??? Doman is a joke. Doman would be better served as the offensive coordinator at Sky Line high school. Also, BYU has NO TALENT.. especially on the offensive and defensive lines. Goodness sakes these kids are BAD! No coach could make this team a winner. Bronco is a great guy and I think a good coach but its the talent of the field that wins and BYU doesn't have it. Utah is a good team. A high school QB could have found open receivers tonight with the time Wynn had to throw. Wynn will get destroyed against Oregon and other Pac 12 teams .... rag arm with ZERO zip on the ball.

I actually felt kind of bad for the cougs until I read the posts from a few of the byu fans. Do you not realize good defenses force turnovers? That good teams make adjustments at halftime? All the sour grapes in Utah county do nothing but make a pretty good whine. I'm shocked. I really thought BYU would put up a little more fight. You don't need to throw yourr defense under the bus. If the O can't move (or hang on to) the ball time, of possesion against any team that badly will wear any D out. Good luck with the rest of the season. It's hard for me to really hate you anymore as the game is not that important up north. I've been going to games quite a while now and I know the way you are feeling right now. What is BYU's problem? Is it Doman, the OC who called very few good plays throughout the game? Is it Heaps who was so terribly inaccurate it made me cringe? Is it the defense that only lasts for one half? Or is it all of the above? This is absolutely the worst BYU game I have ever witnessed, and it was in the biggest game of the year. Sure there are other games to be played, but without a conference, or a decent bowl game to go to this seems like it should have been the game of the year. I don't know what happened, but I am done with Doman. Bench Heaps. That may seem hasty, but neither of them are performing. The offense has been inept through three games. BYU didn't go independent to beat up on teams like UTEP. It went indepent to become a BCS team. Something has to change soon or BYU will be 6-6 again in a year that sees no improvement for a team that is hungry for it.

Utah's football program is simply much better than BYU's. This isn't just Bronco not being able to prepare his players this more a HUGE talent difference between the two programs. Good athletes don't fumble the ball away 7 times. Good athletes don't get lost on the field down after down. Utah is bigger, faster and much more athletic so sorry Cougar fans I think you just watched the beginning of the end of BYU football. I suspect a record this year of 4-7 and next year about the same or worse. How many losing records will it take for the school and the church to simply cut the embarrassment and cancel the program?? BYU is REALLY BAD in every facet of the game. Yikes!! Really pathetic. Oh and a new coach isn't going to make any difference. YOu are going to get somebody to come in and recruit a bunch of un-athletic returned missionaries and expect them to compete against top notch D-1 athletes. So enjoy the firesides Cougar fans because that is about all you will have to look forward to this year ...and the foreseeable future.

I saw two good, but not great teams going into a game that I thought would go down to the end. I'm amazed by the outcome, because I honestly thought that BYU was hitting harder than Utah in the first half.
I have to say that I am so proud of the Ute players. Jordan Wynn spoke of the toughness of the BYU front line and no player chest pounded or said that the win was a result of living right, or claimed to "hate" BYU. This shows signs of the rivalry developing a sense of perspective.

Really? The fun is just beginning? After a 54 to 10 loss you should be a little more humble. Utah just showed BYU where the real athletes are coming to play football. Sure, the turnovers ruined BYU tonight. But the more serious problems are dumb penalties, especially 2 really really dumb pass interference calls on third and long that led to key Ute scores. Also, no offensive coordinator can adequately call a decent game from ground level on the sidelines. No way! Cant see what is really happening out there. Why we throw little short outs on third and long, everytime in 2011, is beyond me. So predictable in the first 3 games. When the BYU offense understands where the first down marker is, and directs meaningful plays towards it, then the offense will work just fine. Hey BYU, It is OK to throw verticle instead of horizontal, and, it is very smart to use those tight ends more too. And pass to set up the run! Finally Bronco, you have got to want to put opponents away. I know you love those close low scoring games but finally getting to the BCS will require a different gametime attitude towards winning. the win had nothing to do with turnovers. BYU simply is terrible. 11 yards rushing vs 280 HAHAHAHA. Wow!

So much vindication for me arguing with delusional byu fans on this stupid website all preseason and season so far. I was right all along. BYU cannot compete with utah this year.

BYU will claim later after beeting the wors teams (and having the worst SOS) that they've "Improved." just bad teams!!! Ole miss is terrible. BYU is worse!

From a Ute fan to BYU fans:
Bronco is a good coach and a great guy. Do not call for his resignation like you did to Anae. Bronco has led you to 4? 10+ win seasons. His record at this point in his career is quite a bit better than Lavells was after 7 seasons. The only difference is now Utah who is much improved from the 80's is beating you consistently. If BYU fires Bronco their football program will be in the dumps for 5-10 years at the minimum.

    Sept. 17, 2011 11:40 p.m.

Any team who can't win and win big with 7 turnovers on their side should be embarrassed. All Utah did tonight was not embarass themselves. Oh, by the way Utes the REAL score of the USC game was 23 - 14 (in case you did not hear).

I actually felt sorry for the ESPN analysts doing their best as apologists for BYU. ESPN has got to be seriously rethinking their relationship with BYU. This is so, so, embarrassing on so many levels.

Well, at least the coaches don't have to stay late and are able to get home for dinner every night. I wouldn't want them to spend one minute more than they need to away from home. After all football is not a priority on the BYU football team. That was clearly evident tonight.

I've never seen such a beat-down in one half.

  • BYUte06 Beverly Hills, CA

Too bad for the dismal showing Cougs, but keep your chins up. Heaps is still young, and has a great arm, he just needs to settle down and the offensive needs to find its rhythm. You have some great, long wide outs, and a stoud O line as always. Your D is as good as I think I've ever seen, but they looked exhausted in the second half. That could be a result of conditioning, inability to rotate players in and out, or lost morale (which, given the circumstances, is understandable). But, the talent is definitely there.

I hope for your sakes the rest of the season picks up, you have a far better pedigree and tradition than your team showed tonight. It might be time for some changes among the coaching ranks..but that's for the administration to decide. I personally thought it was a bad decision to push out Anae, given his track record of success.

I'm ashamed at some of the comments on this board tonight.

This is not the time to pile on the BYU team or the coaches. Show some class.

The only thing possible in a situation like this is to regroup, and rebuild the confidence, and go forward, without looking back.

Kyle Whittingham has done this with the Utes a number of times over the pass few years, and we can too.

    Sept. 17, 2011 11:35 p.m.

I have never been so embarrassed.....not just with sports, about anything. That is the most pathetic thing I have ever seen in my life

just want to point out a few things

1- The players gave up. Anytime, there is a little opposition, they give up

2- I would give anything to see mendenhall get fired up and get in someones face for giving up/fumbling in the red zone/etc. he is too mellow to be head coach. Should stick with DC

3-I simply dont understand how you can be down by 23 at the start of the 4th quarter and come out and only run 5-and-out routes, then huddle up after every play. As Herm Edwards would say YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME. We havent figured that out yet

    Sept. 17, 2011 11:35 p.m.

Unbelievable! What a slaughter!!! I don't know if many fans from either fanbase saw this coming. If you read the local papers and listened to the local sports talk shows, all you heard all week was how good Heaps is, how BYU's defense is equal to the Utes, and that BYU would win. Ah, it's nice to see my rivals have to eat a little humble pie.

Utah's future is looking great. For all the criticism that Wynn has had to take, remember, he is a 3-year starter and has had a lot of good games already (the bowl victory over Cal; he played every bit as good as Hall in the rivalry game 2 years ago as well; etc.). He's led the Utes to two 10-win seasons, and tonight he looked like his old pre-surgery self.

    Great game, Utes!!!

There were about ten late plays in a row to John White IV. It was obvious the ball was going to him. And he churned up some ridiculous yards during that stretch. He had something like 9 yards on 9 carries for the first half. So, BYU contained him well then. What a difference a half can make.

BYU fans will say "Bronco is a great coach. Look at his record."

Things Bronco is a good at:

    - defensive coordinator.

    - "setting the tone" and getting effort

    Things he is horrible at:

    - Oversight of assistants. "Run out the clock and kick a field goal" at last year's Ute game? That is a HC call, not a coordinator call.

    - Game planning for a TEAM, vs game planning a defense. Florida State, faster, smaller, you've got a huge line, a huge back that is your best ever. Pound the ball and keep your defense off the field.

    - OC calls a handoff instead of kneeling on it to run out the half against UCLA years back. The HC isn't paying attention? 2-4 minutes left in a half a HC should be paying attention to managing the clock. Texas did last week, and the 3 points at the end of the half won the game for them.

    - Your RB's season after season, even with a change in RB coaches, don't protect the ball on the goal line? (Unga one-handed it on the goal line all the time and fumbled.) HC needs to see that and hold the COACH responsible.

Has a member of BYU's coaching staff coughed up the ball lately? Give credit where credit is due. Ute D is solid!

First, Ute D is solid. Not doubt. BUT:

A fumbled shotgun snap isn't the defense, it is the offense. Failing to fall on it isn't the defense, it is the offense. Not knowing to fall on it, that is coaching.

Failing to fall on a fumbled kickoff, that is coaching and execution. Gunners being at the 5, that is defense, and failure to block by special teams.

Only throwing one pass down field (that went for a TD, mind you), that is play calling. Having an offense that CONSISTENTLY snaps the ball with a couple seconds on the clock. That is coaching and reflects two things: Slow play calling, and pace of play in practice.

Wanting to be on the sidelines "because you have young players" is over-estimating "rah rah" and underestimating setting players up to succeed through good play calling. Has Chow never had a young QB? Every 2-3 years of his entire career -- that has been spent in the booth.

This is the first BYU game that I have ever seen the BYU defense quit, and they did it with 12 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Give Utah's defensive coaches credit, the Ute defense killed the Cougar's offense. The BYU players are as good as Utah's. The failure is on the BYU offensive coaches' preparation of the team. They failed the whole team.

Been a long time since we have seen such a total melt-down of coaches, players, fans and admiinistrators.....the shell-shocked looks and deer-in-the-headlights stares were amazing. No bragging rights this decade for those obnoxious &/or humble fans who live and die with a win or loss.....no way I can go to church this week......as I actually like both teams.

Spin this however you want to, but the hype from some players & coaches seems to be lost in reality. Maybe actions really do speak louder than words.

    Pathetic. Absolutely and utterly pathetic.

The Ute Trolls are absolutely correct...BYU football is nothing but a jumped up mid-major wannabe with delusions of grandeur...and that's all it will ever be.

If the brethren decided at their meeting next week to drop the program, I wouldn't shed any tears.

I am done with BYU football, and I am gone.

Well, we now know two things. 1. Just how bad BYU is, and 2. Just how hopeless Heaps is. BYU better throw him in a heap. Does remind me however of my years as a marching band member for Utah back in the early 60's, and it appears that the old fighting slogan for BYU back then will be applicable to this year. That old refrain coming from Prove was and I guess will be again, "WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!"

The Utah/BYU game is probably the best test as to the quality of both teams coaches. BYU coaches are failing. Doman better start doing his job, because he will not last the year if this keeps up.

A test of Bronco as a head coach will be whether Doman is in press box next game.

At the end of the 3rd, the BYU offense is choking and doesn't want the ball. The skill players (specifically Heaps) is showing no toughness nor confidence. Two fumbles and overthrowing wide open short-route throws into the flat.

The Utah/BYU game is probably the best test as to the quality of both teams coaches. BYU coaches are failing. Doman better start doing his job, because he will not last the year if this keeps up. They have got rid of two outstanding offensive coaches (Chow, and Anae) for doing a better job.

Hey guys itleast we play the ISU bengals this year. We should defeat them and get the offense rolling by the time we play that Big Sky power team. This is just pathetic. Maybe BYU is out of Utah's league in College football. I definately know that BYU is out of Utah's league when it comes to coaching. Offense so predictable and no running game. One dimensional. Defense starting to get exposed by a very average Pac 12 team. I'm ready for a change in the head coach. He just hasn't been able to get it done.

    Eason is horrible.

Bronco will say "We didn't execute." Well, coach, whose fault is that?

A snap goes into the end zone. What should a player be taught? Fall on it and take a safety, don't give up a touchdown.

Player fumbles on the 5, holding the ball in one arm, low. What should he be taught? High and tight, or two hands near the end zone.

30 yard punt return? Didn't BYU get killed in special teams last year?

BYU should be totally embarassed for the way they are playing today. Total lack of prepration from the coaching staff. It all starts at the top and that's Mendenhall and Doman. Didn't have the team ready to play today and they got dominated by a very average Pac 12 team.
