The power to indoctrinate our children, worth something? The federal government
thinks so, as its making a power grab to do just that, and has been since the
"No child left behind" act. The power of our community to
create educated people that reflect OUR values and work ethic is being
diminished by those who want to have everyone "one the same page."
Just something to be aware of. If the worse case scenario happens, and the Feds
take over education, then the last line of defense is the parents, who need to
be in the know of what their children are being taught, but more importantly,
what are children are NOT being taught.

When I read letters like this I think the sky must be falling and I didn't get
the memo. The federal government does not have total control over education
with the implementation of these standards. It makes sense to know that
educators and the private sector have come together and have said that these
standards are what are necessary for educating our students in the 21st century.
Everyone against public education has said for years that there is no rhyme nor
reason as to what gets taught in our classrooms with the 3 R's. Now that there
is rhyme and reason people want to get upset with that as well? No wonder those
of us in education keep scratching our heads and asking "What do they

Heretic are very basically uninformed about the Common Core. In the first place
it was not developed by the federal government. The Common Core has been
developed by a consortium of states with Utah taking a leading role. Please don't criticize something that you have so little information about.
As one who has heard several in depth presentations on the Common Core, I am
excited at the potential this has for our children and wish that I might have
had the benefit of this Common Core when I was a student, especially in math
classes. Perhaps I would have enjoyed and understood mathematics more
completely. As Utahns we should feel grateful and proud for the
leadership role our state has taken in this movement rather than jumping to
unwarranted conclusions and criticisms.
My letter published in the Reader's Forum was written out of complete
frustration. I have been an educator in a highly impacted school where more
than eighteen languages were spoken. Do I think one size fits all for these
students? No! My children have been involved in gifted programs. honors and AP
classes in the public school system. They have become competitive and
successful students and have been accepted into prestigious universities and
very competitive programs. Do I think that one size fits all would have worked
for them? No! The common "cure" curriculum is just another new
curriculum that supposedly will be the answer to our public education's woes.
Even though a consortium (special interest group) were involved in developing
this program, it is funded by the federal government through the back door. Do I
want students to learn what I believe is morally correct? No! I want them to
learn the morals that are in the constitution by the people and for the people.
They are the morals that this Godlike country were founded on. I want education
to remain at the local level, where we can decide our children's academic and
