The only way the big 12 could be saved is if Notre Dame joins. If ND, then I imagine a few others- Louisville, Pitt, Arkansas, BYU would also want to join- but it's not gonna happen.

If the Big 12 want to add BYU, it should be a gradual transition- 2-4 Big 12 FB and 4-8 Big 12 Bball games a year over a 4-5 year period. This way, when the Big 12 fails, BYU can still fill it's schedule with some good match-ups.

Jumping onto a sinking ship is never a good idea. We should let Tom do his job, and over time the SJSU's and ISU's will disappear from the schedule.

If super-conferences start to form- they won't last long. Oklahoma/OK St don't want to be part of the PAC, and the Big 12 under some other name will re-emerge where Texas doesn't run the table.

The Big 12 is a much better football conference than the PAC 12, and BYU replacing TAMU will make the conference even stronger.

BCS Championships
Big 12 - 2
PAC 12 - 0

BCS Championship Games
Big 12 - 2-4
PAC 12 - 0-1

BYU vs TAMU (during the Bronco era)
BYU - 56-21; four Top 25 finishes
TAMU - 40-35; one Top 25 finish; 3 losing seasons

As far as stability goes; BYU won't accept an invitation to the Big 12 without a guarantee that Texas and Oklahoma will remain in the the Big 12 for at least another five years.

Yes, we are, no we are not, maybe we are, perhaps, looking into it, now we aren't, this is not true, yes it is true, nothing to say. Just chose one of the previous statements and you might be right on any given day.

Is BYU invited to Big-12?

Big-12 is a BCS and BYU is a mid-major...I don't see the match

"BYU in the Big 12? Watch all the Ute fans squirm with denial and disbeleif [sic]!"

Denial, huh...said the "Boyd K. Packer" conspiracy theorist. You haven't been invited. And even if you DO receive an invitation, it'll be to a crumbling conference bowed and beholden to Bevo, and one who makes significantly less money than the Pac-12. So what is there for us to squirm over, or deny?

If you're looking for a sample of squirming and denial, look no further to your OWN fanbase who have been posting nonsense for over a year now about how: Utah was never wanted, Utah will be a Pac-12 bottom-feeder, nobody outside of Utah has ever heard of the Utes, Pac-12 fans are upset that Scott invited Utah and CU rather than remain at 10 teams...

...but playing an ESPN WAC schedule, and earning a fraction of the Pac-12's media package is extraordinary.

Talk about "squirm" and "denial".

a&m has barely been better than Baylor over the Big XII conference years. They leave as the little brother to become the ugly stepchild of the SEC. It is amusing that a&m has one good year (not great by Texas standards) and they think the world should revolve around them. Hope they enjoy the 15 minutes of fame, they are almost up.

As for all of the gloom & doom regarding the survival of the Big XII, the same people expected UT & OU to jump last year to the PAC 10. The Big XII will continue to survive with UT, OU, OSU, TCU and company. Hookem!!!

"Big-12 is a BCS and BYU is a MAJOR INDEPENDENT...I don't see the match"

Take off your crimson-colored glasses and it might help you to see reality:

BYU is a national brand, legacy program, former national champion, perennial Top 25 team, with an historical 4-0 record against the big dogs of the Big 12 - Texas and Oklahoma.

At least BYU will be joining the Big 12 based on the excellence of its sports programs and national fan base, rather than some bogus "research" university criteria that has absolutely nothing to do with sports.

Why do some of you BYU fans think U fans would be nervous about BYU going to the Big 12? Most of us have been expecting some sort of move like that for a while.

The big question is whether or not BYU would go to the Big 12 as a football only school. The other sports in the Big 12 play on Sunday. If the Big 12 will take BYU's football team and allow the other teams to remain in the WCC then it would work out fine.

If not, BYU would either have to convince the Big 12 to stop Sunday play, or, respectfully decline the invite.

Cougs should join if invited. I think the Big 12 will add 2 other teams to go up to 12. I wouldn't be surprised if they go for the super conference 16 teams. This is the only way the Big 12 would remain stable over the long term.

BYU now has the luxury of sitting back and waiting for the dust to settle before deciding whether to accept an invitation to the Big 12, or not.

If the conditions are right, I expect BYU to immediately join the Big 12 in football, with possibly some delay in bringing BYU's other sports to the Big 12, in order to be fair to the WCC. BYU might even decide to keep women's soccer and a few other sports in the WCC.

Here is one Ute fan who thinks BYU ought to seek a guarantee from UT and Oklahoma before makign the move. Cougar fans, you have it REALLY good right now as an indy. I would make sure the big 12 is stable before jumping ship.

Why would there be "panic" on the Hill as some of you have suggested? I thought Utah was no longer part of your thoughts. I also thought BYU liked Independence. From most of these posts Independence was the backup plan to a BCS invite that never came, not BYU's first option. Oooops. Now BYU jealousy is coming out. No longer are you hiding behind the "I like Independence more, anyway" comments.

Whatever. Its not just about football. The Pac 12 has more NCAA titles in all sports that any other conference.

BYU is not in consideration for Big XII membership.

There is too much local pull to get Arkansas, SMU, TCU, or UH into the league. Then, there is the contingency that wants to get ASU and UA to join the Big XII.

BYU is isolated in the mountain west. Most Big XII schools want to keep current geographics, and not take on the travel time and expense.

Whether to play a conference tournament Thu-Sat or Fri-Sun is of small concern when you're trying to solidify a conference. Basketball-heavy teams like Kansas and Kansas State would gladly trade not holding tournament games on Sunday for keeping their conference from imploding.

Besides, other than a handful of conference tournaments, the Big 12 could easily schedule around BYU's no Sunday play, while still having Sunday games for the rest of the conference.

Folks in the midwest are much more respecting of religious values.

Speculation about the Big-12's future is all over the map. DeLoss Dodds, the Texas AD, assures everyone that Texas and OU are going to remain in the Big-12. Ofcourse, many cite Dodds and Texas' domineering control over the Big-12 as the main reason why that conference has stability problems.

Other observers in Austin give it a 70% chance that Texas and OU go to the PAC. In Oklahoma the speculation is that Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will be heading to the PAC.

If these are the anchors of the Big-12, what is BYU getting itself into?

Geez people need to get out and read what ND and Big 12 fans and writers are saying.
ND is going nowhere. One day they will end up in the Big 10 or Big East where their other sports are. They can write their own ticket and will not join a failing Big12 run by Bevo.

Yeah people are talking about BYU and how they can join the Big 12, and even if it failed BYU could still walk away. But the fact still remains that Big 12 schools are distancing themselves from Texas both in the media and behind the scene.

Who are you kidding?

Football is the 800-lb gorilla that is solely responsible driving the realignment train.

Even basketball plays a distant 2nd fiddle, and the other sports don't even appear as a blip on the radar.

"Big-12 is a BCS and BYU is a MAJOR INDEPENDENT...I don't see the match"

byu is not a major independent, if they were they would get the same BCS deal as Notre Dame.

"BYU is a national brand, legacy program, former national champion, perennial Top 25 team"

What national brand and legacy program are you talking about? If byu had that, major conferences would be drooling to get byu into their conference like Notre Dame.

"At least BYU will be joining the Big 12 based on the excellence of its sports programs and national fan base, rather than some bogus "research" university criteria that has absolutely nothing to do with sports."

That is not true either! The Big 12 would invite byu to REPLACE Texas A&M and nothing else. The National Fan base is the reason byu is a most likely candidate for the Big 12 for replacement. The Pac-10 did not expand to replace departed schools. They expanded to get bigger and to negotiate a new TV deal to bring in more money for the conference and Utah has always been a candidate (Plan A or B).
