Congratulations to Herriman. In only their 2nd year they are one of the exciting, promising teams in the state. Great coaching, kids willing to work hard, and a terrific community that supports them. Last year they became the first first-year 5A team in history to make the playoffs. Now, they've dispatched their 5A neighbors as a 4A program. This is the team to beat in 4A. Now, Deseret News you need to rank them in your Top 5. Way to go Mustangs!
It must be hard to be a fan of Riverton. You could never beat the school that most of your kids would have gone to (Bingham). Then...to add insult...the school that was formed mostly from your boundaries(Herriman) beats you in their second year. To make it even worse they are 4A and you are 5A.
That game was fun. Amazing to see what a school and community can accomplish in such a short time, when working together. Coach Wilson was a steal and has surrounded himself with some pretty impressive people. The kids played and represented like they'd been together for years.
Impressed in West Jordan!
Man Riverton has hit rock bottom. With the same amount of students as Bingham and Alta they lose to the newbies.
Herriman was smart in hiring the staff that they have. Coach Wilson is the man to bring the hard wear to the trophy case. There is not a team in their region that compares. Look to Herriman to run the table.
Riverton played strong and will have a good year.
Lets not get crazy here. Yes that was a great win for your program. But Riverton is having a way down year. they barely beat hillcrest who has won about 2 games in the last 5 years. You still havent played one of the real top 25 teams in the state. Great win but lets not start saying your the team to beat in 4a.
First and foremost riverton was out coached by the Herriman coaching staff.
Athletically the teams seem very close but hands down Harrimans coaching won that game. Not to mention the Herriman kids work harder, dont have an expectation of entitlement and are just really a good bunch of kids.
Great Job Herriman Kids and Coaches. After only 2 years of football you have learned what the other team will probably never figure out. First class all the way!
Good job fellas on an epic win! This was one for the ages!!! 12 more wins until we get the Utah 4A State Championship!!!
UteFan21,
Good win for Herriman. But you are delusional. There is no way Herriman is all of the suddent the "team to beat" in 4A. Good win but Timpview is still better. Highland is the team to beat and would crush Herriman. East would beat Herriman. When I saw you were a ute fan it all made sense though.
@black shirts, You are spot on! Bingham, Alta, Riverton and probably Lone Peak and Davis have so many more students than other 5A schools they could probably be 6A. Riverton should be showing better with that many students to choose from.
Riverton, if you want to be considered up there with Alta, Davis, Bingham, and all the other top enrollment schools, then you better start playing like it.
@Football881 & @whoisjohngalt - it is not wrong or delusional to state that Herriman is the team to beat in 4A. As long as we are undefeated....then we ARE the team to beat in 4A.....along with Box Elder, Logan, Roy, East, Highland and Olympus!
What makes you think Timpview or Highland would crush Herriman? After two games...there is no way to tell either way. But what we did learn is that Herriman can overcome adversity and win. Herriman is 12 wins away from a 4A Championship...so still a long way to go, but nonetheless...2 games closer than we were at the beginning of the season.
Please don't diminish our win by saying Riverton is down this year...with the departure of so many D-I signees last year...most teams in the state are either down or rebuilding...in the end...its the teams with the most wins in the region that go to the playoffs...and its the team that can go 4-0 in the playoffs that becomes State Champions!
I am predicting a Football 4A State title for Herriman in either 2011 or 2012...and possibly both years.
Benzo...I am a Herriman fan myself and think that the program is very much on the rise after last night...but slow down dude, I think you are jumping the gun a bit. Let's see where they are in a few more games, eh? After all, Orem just lost to East 41-17 and we only be them by 3. I am really excited, just as you are, but most of the starters are still underclassmen and still inexperienced - lots of football to be played. That said, I think that the boys put the state on notice that this program is getting good really fast. GO MUSTANGS!!
I'm sure teams like Highland, East, Timpview, Bountiful, Box Elder, Logan, and Mountain Crest will roll over when they play Herriman. Good win for sure and have to give them credit, but in the end I don't think they win their region. I actually thought Herriman looked more athletic than Riverton.
Wow,
Herriman beats Riverton by one point and everyone thinks state Title all of a sudden? Riverton will get beat by PG, LP, Bingham, Lehi, and AF this year in there own region, so before you Herriman people get all excited about state, win a few more games.
Your program cant be on the rise after beating someone in 5A, when yes your 4A, but your on the border of being 5A, nad becasue your new is why your in 4A and in 4 years you will be right back to 5A with all the growth of Herriman out there.
Riverton has a bunch of students yes!
Students can be anything they want, not just football players, so they need this thing called Athletes, something that in 10 years, Riverton has not had a huge amount of, and it doesnt help even if you did have alot of athletes, that Riverton runs the worst offense in the state, Wing T, hasnt worked for the current head coach yet, so why keep trying it there coach?
Herriman congrats on the awesome win, but be humble 2nd year team, a down riverton team this year. Common
binghamalum,
Very good post. I have to say that as a Riverton parent I think they will beat PG, Lehi, and AF. Riverton is in a down year, but not for lack of talent. They have some good young athletes who need some experience. Notice I did not say very good young athletes; that remains to be seen.
As for the Wing T, know something about it before you post. Riverton does more with fewer athletes because of the Wing T. Do some research and you will see that Riverton always scores plenty of points, it is the defense and mainly the secondary that has been the problem. BTW, some of the biggest schools in California run the wingt. Alex Smith and Reggie Bush played in a wing t offense at Helix High School.
foorballisgood:
Please dont read into the East-Orem score. The game was still in the air starting in the 4th quarter with Orem's receivers dropping two potential touchdowns when they were only down 27-17. East had a very good defense but it was not a blowout until the end. Orem lost to Herriman because they missed 2 PATs, 1 two point conversion and a blocked 19 yard field goal. Yes, Orem will have some adjusting to do, but it won't take much. None of the players on Orems team started all of the games last year. Mark my words, Orem will finish first or second in their division once they figure out personnel and the new offense.
@everyone on this post - Herriman is a good team...with or without the win against Riverton. Last year as a 5A school...they made the playoffs...the first 5A school in Utah to do that. The Herriman team this year is better than last years team.
I honestly see Herriman being 5-0 when they meet Skyline Sept 23rd and 6-0 when they travel to Olympus Sept 30th. Going into this season, Herriman had 4 key games this year...vs Riverton, vs Skyline, at Olympus and at Westlake...so far they are 1-0 in those 4 games! Please believe that Herriman will be in the mix for the Region 7 title and for the 4A State title...this year and next.
@Eagle - who do you believe will Region 7 besides Herriman?....Olympus, Westlake or Skyline? Whomever you believe it is....Herriman can compete with them. As far as the rest of 4A...Highland and East are good teams. I don't believe they will roll over Herriman if they by chance meet in the playoffs. Herriman is a young team that gets better with every game. Herriman WILL be playing late October and in November!!!
BigBenzo88....I watched the Bingham vs. Herriman game last year and came away with a totally different feeling than you. Herriman was not very good and looked very much like a first year school (4A or 5A). They made the playoffs because they took an extra team from region 3 and West Jordan, T-Ville, and Copperhills were very bad. You got in the playoffs by default. How did your playoff run go?
You have a long way to go to be considered an elite 4A team.
Wow, what a great game. Kind of surprised that binghamalum and HS Sport Dude feel the need to jump on any Herriman article and rip them. Not sure why. It hurt to watch the new school take us out, but they really seemed to want it more. I thought Herriman looked very tired down the stretch, but they dug down deep. Maybe the huge crowd, playing in RES or playing big brother Riverton had a lot to do with it. Going for 2 was smart, win or lose. I watched their D late in the game and they were on fumes. Another OT would have been an easy Riverton TD. Hats off to the coaching staff at Herriman, but just as much credit goes to the kids. Riverton will make adjustments and be fine. Hoping for another playoff win. Good Luck to both teams.
Herriman has a ways to go, but it is typical in a 7 team region to take the top 4. And I would not call WJ very bad. They had one of the best offenses in the state and played Bingham better than almost any team I saw last year. And yes Herriman lost the playoff game, but they took it to a then-undefeated CWood team for a while and led them at the half until CWood went mano a mano and the talent gap was exposed. Herriman scored more points against Cottonwood last year than anyone with the exception of Jordan, who did it with Cottonwood missing some really good defensive players that played against Herriman.
I am by no means ready to anoint Herriman, and it is ridiculous to jump the gun and call them state title contenders because they are definitely not. But they were anything but a typical first year program...and lots of teams looked just as foolish against that great Bingham team last year.
