Utah Utes football: Utes' theme for Day 5 was physicality

Quarterback Jordan Wynn saw limited action for precautionary reasons.

Apparently the anti-Ute "fans", and supposed radio show, are incorrect saying that Wynn hasn't thrown in the last 2 practices. They might not know that the media is restricted to the last 30 minutes of practice. With Wynn being on a throw count, the media probably doesn't see him throw because he is already done with the throws.

It sounds like the defense is going to be awesome this year, even more so with 2 standout safeties. The linebacker core sounds like it is just about as deep as the very talented D-Line.

The offense should also be great. The new backup QB Hays seeing plenty of action with Wynn being limited in throws. The RB's and WR's sound lightening fast. 3 WR's are 4.4 or under on the 40. If Denham can comes back soon, then the receiving core will give any team serious problems.

This is going to be an exciting year to watch.
    Go Utes!!!

"Quarterback Jordan Wynn saw limited action for precautionary reasons."

Regardless of whether Wynn sat out because of soreness in his shoulder or simply because of precautionary reasons, the fact that he's seeing limited action is a concern. Wynn can't learn Utah's offense and develop the required timing with his receivers if he's not on the field practicing.

Let's put the term "limited action" in the proper context, shall we?

Wynn is being limited to 100 throws per practice session. In the entire 2010 season, Wynn only attempted 299 throws. That means every three practices - even in "limited action" - Wynn is making an entire season's worth of throws.

I'd say that's plenty of reps to learn the offense and get the timing down, wouldn't you?

  • Ufan Salt Lake City, UT
    Aug. 10, 2011 8:41 a.m.

    Brave Sir Robin

"Limited to 100 throws per practice session" doesn't necessarily mean Wynn is throwing 100 times per practice -- the 100 throws is his max limit; there is no min limit, so we really don't know if Wynn is making 0 throws or 10 throws or 100 throws per practice.

Since we're not seeing any attempts/completions numbers per QB it's all guesswork as far as fans knowing how Wynn is doing, except for general comments from coaches that he's doing okay. Sugarcoating his progress now isn't going to help the team come September.

Wynn won't be fully recovered from his surgery before the season starts.

Denham won't be back for at least another month.

None of Utah's backup quarterbacks have taken a single snap in a live Div I game.

None of Utah's running backs have played a single down in a live Div I game.

Most of Utah's receivers have not played a single down in a live Div I game.

    Utah's offensive has no depth.

And Utah is installing a completely new offensive scheme.

Yet, Utah fans believe that an offense that only scored 7, 3, 17, and 3 points in four of its last five games, and lost almost all of its skill position players, is going to be "great".

Delusion is running rampant on the hill.

  • Riddles in the Dark Olympus Cove, Utah

Reading between the lines, I'd say Wynn's injury situation is much more dire than Utah coaches are letting on and that Utah is furiously trying to get a backup QB up to speed in case of the very real possibility that Wynn won't be ready to start the season. I'd be very surprised if Wynn plays more than a series or two against Montana State.

He will be in a sling by the end of the season.

    anti -

And you're commenting on these boards because....??? Ever troll??? You care and are jealous and bitter.

"Wynn won't be fully recovered from his surgery before the season starts."

Everything I've read is that he is at 100%, but he is being brought along with precuation. I trust KWhitt more than you.

"Denham won't be back for at least another month."

Doesn't he fall into the category of somebody with no Div.1 experience? By your logic, which is faulty, this doesn't deserve a separate comment by you. Sounds more like you're jealous and hateful, brah.

"None of Utah's running backs have played a single down in a live Div I game."

And? They are a talented bunch and I am confident that the RB that emerges will be successful. Other Frosh or limited experience backs have had an impact in the past. Why not one of these guys? RB is one of the easiest positions to transition from one level to the next. Polk, UW RB, is a good example. He had a tremendous year last year and he was a Freshman. It can and will be done.

    Now go eat some Jell-O.

  • Brave Sir Robin San Diego, CA
    Aug. 10, 2011 9:41 a.m.

Ufan, sorry but you're wrong - every day his exact number of throws has been tracked on a whiteboard by the field and is reported by the media. On day 1 he threw 79 times, day 2 he threw 93 times, etc. So rest assured - he is getting reps.

    RE: anti-BCS

"Delusion is running rampant on the hill"....that's an ironic statement coming from a BYU fan (just voted 8th most delusional in the country by Sports Illustrated). I see you guys are predicting another undefeated season and a national championship - how's that worked out for you the past 25 Augusts you've been talking about it? I also see that you guys are claiming independence is better than the PAC12, yet now your coaches are telling recruits that you'll be in the Big12 in a couple of years. If being independent is so great, why would your coaches be selling recruits on the benefits of being in a conference?

  • mussingaround Palo Alto, CA
    Aug. 10, 2011 9:56 a.m.

    Brave Sir Robin

The real issue is how many times did Wynn throw in practices 3, 4 and 5 when he saw "limited" action. If all of those throws in practices 1 and 2 caused Wynn to miss most of practices 3, 4 and 5, that's a red flag about just how "fully recovered" Wynn really is.

btw, attacking BYU fans isn't going to solve your precarious QB situation and burying your head in the sand isn't going to help, either.

Utah's coaches had a panic attack when Wynn locked knees with a running back and went down. That tells you all you need to know about just how worried Utah's coaching staff is about Wynn's health.

Bronco also when talking about BYU fans said:

"For the people in the most visible positions: Head coach, quarterback, corner, offensive tackle, something like that; the positions which give up or could be criticized easily by a normal person, just by visibility, not necessarily a great fan, in terms of education and understanding the broader scheme of things, but if you're just to look out and say, where are the mistakes, the level of criticism usually matches the level of education and the fans, the people it comes from."

    Aug. 10, 2011 10:47 a.m.

Wow, lot's of scared BYU fans on this one trying to paint a gloom and doom picture so they feel better about their team's inferior position. Wynn is being compared to the great QBs in the Conference of QBs and even Chow himself compared Wynn to Ty Detmer - I think he has a pretty good viewpoint on each of them, too.

Of course the coaches are concerned about Wynn's health, just goes to show how highly they think of him. You don't think Stanford is worried about Luck's health?

@ArticunoBYU, if Bronco really does think Heaps is better than Luck, he's as delusional as the fan base.

Troll Hunter, given your screen name do you think it's a bit ironic that you are a BYU fan trolling the Ute boards. You should probably get a new name. I have a suggestion... just drop the Hunter and keep the Troll.

To Utah/Wynn naysayers, you are probably the same group of geniuses that said Brian Johnson would never perform well after his injury. He proved you all wrong by leading Utah to a 22-4 record over two season including Poinsettia and Sugar bowl wins. However, we do appreciate your intense interest in the Utes, perhaps you ought to just come out of the closet now and admit you can't control your obsession with Utah football.

How quickly BYU fans forget that Jordan Wynn (even with a major injury) beat BYU 17-16 last season. Talk about selective amnesia...

Now whether Wynn has even beaten a good team is up for debate. Beating a 7-6 BYU team certainly doesn't qualify.

Could be a very special year for this team. Energy seems the highest its ever been. With 2 BCS games in recent years, the Pac 12 invite was just the boost we needed. If the team sticks together and Jordan's arm stays strong and healthy we could be battling for that elusive #1 spot. This year can't come soon enough.

I noticed that Utah has questions at a couple of positions, ie running back, defensive secondary... This however doesn't mean that they aren't going to be strengths. Questions have answers. If Utah had real issues, we might be more concerned.

If Wynn gets injured, that could be an issue. Notice the IF? Jon Hays might prove to be a better QB than Wynn, I doubt Shreve would be.

There would be an issue IF too many O-line players get injured. The O-line is pretty strong, but not deep.

I seriously doubt there will be any issues at WR or RB. Both are very talented and deep.

From what I've heard, the safeties are going to be stellar. The corner's are still a question for me. We'll see if they will prove themselves.

    @mussingaround

I'm sure if Heaps and Quezada went down locking knees in practice, I'm sure the BYU staff would just laugh and think it was funny, right?

  • flintrock Rigby, Id

I hear in this paper how there is competition going on for the safety positions. Its an open position and everyone has a shot. That is just not true. There is no competition what so ever. McGill and Rowe are getting most of the reps and the rest of the safeties are just standing around watching. Bored to tears. That has been true from day one. Tell it like it is and please do not make us think that Whit has not already made up his mind before camp ever started who will be the safeties. If it was fair and open everyone would get equal reps to prove there skills. Its pretty easy for McGill and Rowe to have great days every day if they are getting the majority of the reps. Give us the truth not made up hype.

I find it interesting that new players are given the royal treatment and the players who have followed the rules and put their time in and been loyal to Whits system are shoved to the side so that his latest and greatest freshman or JC transfer can walk the red carpet come fall camp.

  • flintrock Rigby, Id
    Aug. 11, 2011 4:06 a.m.

Lets set the record straight at the safety position. There is no competition going on for that position contrary to what this paper reports. McGill and Rowe from day one have received most of the reps. They have great days as reported in this paper because no other safety's are given any reps. From day one they have received the red carpet treatment while the other safety's are shoved to the side to watch practice bored to tears.

There is nothing equal or fair about the competition at safety. It was a stacked deck long before fall camp ever started.
