Now if they can get Kentucky and Vandi they can claim all the dredges of the SEC.

Wake me up when AL,FL,LSU,GA,AU come to the land of unicorns and rainbows.

Another solid opponent. They went 8-5 last year including the 31-28 loss to Louisville in the beef o brady's bowl. 3 of the other losses were between 1 and 5 points. A better team than I first thought they would be.
Can't wait for BYU football.

Hedge Hog,

Your sports acumen is showing again, Southern Miss is in Confrence USA and have been bowling for the last nine years. Shall we now talk about the present and future dredges of the PAC, hum?

This calls for a trip to the BYU creamery!

My momma is from MS. I'm pretty sure we'll be planning a trip back to MS to watch the Cougs. All I can say is that I wish it were sooner.

Didn't Bertt Farve play at SoMiss?

Solid opponent, its a good thing for byu to pick up the middle of the sec teams.

So. Miss. is not in the SEC, but they are "perty" good.

This is exciting for me and my family. It's great that BYU is planning on playing all over the country. Now I have to decide whether to hit up the creamery before or after my broom hockey game.

Conference USA is the next step down from the MWC. They tend to be a solid team comparable to an Air Force in the CUSA.

I agree that we should all celebrate with ice cream. It will be out of this world and I certainly cannot wait to see it on Thursday night on KBYU or the world leader.

I was wrong, you are right. It's not a SEC team but a Conference USA team...........

Well, wedgie, thanks for acknowledging that the mighty BcS conferences pad their schedules with the weaklings of their own conferences.

Guess what: If Utah doesn't perform well the first couple years, they will be super-glued to the bottom of the PAC. They'll find athletes would rather play and succeed at a top tier MWC team, like Utah was, than get their heads beat in at a bottom-of-the-heap PAC club, and the PAC cache will not matter.

Do I believe Utah will be successful? As long as Whitt is the coach.

Do I think Max was right? Mostly, no, but some, like you, validate his view every day...

2014? Shouldn't BYU be part of the Big 12 by then?

San Diego, CA

Not a Texas or Notre Dame, but still it's good to balance the schedules for 2014 and 2015 with a fairly strong team like S.Miss. to ensure that BYU doesn't have too many cupcakes on its schedule for those years, such as Utah.

I don't get all the snarky comments about having to play on Thursday and Friday nights. Thus far, it would seem that they are few and far between.

But really, why wouldn't you want to have your team play on a weeknight, when no one else is playing, on national TV, thereby freeing up your Saturdays for other things.

I'll agree that playing on Thursdays made BYU (and the WAC & MWC) seem lesser when compared to the big conferences, but that was more than a decade ago and most top-20 teams have since played a mid-week game.

To my Ute friends: why wouldn't you rather play on a Thursday night on a national network as opposed to playing on a Saturday on a regional network? Granted you can watch either, but these days it is all about exposure, and ESPN provides it.

The error in conference affiliation aside, The top teams in the SEC play the dredges of the SEC every year. It works for them, and all we ever hear about is how SEC teams have to play other SEC teams week in and week out. What's wrong with BYU doing it? Similarly, Boise State has made it to two BCS bowls by playing some of the the very same teams that will be on BYU's schedule next year and the year after. It worked for Boise State. Why can't BYU do it?

Henderson, NV

Good points, Farid. And I would add that a win on a thursday or friday counts every bit as much as a win on a saturday. Furthermore, poll voters are far more likely to see a thursday or friday game that is televised than a saturday game that isn't televised.

Southern Miss is an upgrade from Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado State, UNLV. Certainly better than the Idaho and Idaho States of the world. Nice pick up by Holmoe. This is the kind of game that will be crucial to BYU upgrading its entire schedule and getting exposure throughout the country. It isn't a top tier game like an Alabama, Auburn or Oregon, but you can't have a schedule full of all top 20 teams. You need to play other games that will lighten the load while still building the strength of schedule and credibility. This years schedule has a good dose of top competition, but the bottom half of the schedule is too weak. Scheduling Southern Miss types in the future rather than the bottom of the WAC will be very helpful and neccessary.

They aren't ND or Texas... but they'll probably do better than the Utes this coming year. I say a pretty solid pick-up.

This game will balance out the schedule- it's not upper echelon, but not necessarily a gimme either.

To detractors- It's always better to pad your schedule than to be the pad!

I'd like to see a home and home scheduled with Southern California soon like our red neighbors to the north. We'll have to settle for Southern Mississippi and maybe College of Southern Idaho in the meantime.

Wake me up when Utah actually accomplishes something in the land of unicorns and rainbows.
