It is not only sad but it is very disturbing that there are actually people out there who take these games so seriously as to actually castigate and threaten a player. I am a huge sports fan, but my team doesn't always win and that is part of life. I know the players did their best and that they feel worse than any fan does when they do not play well. Those who live their lives through these players and have meltdowns when they make mistakes need professional help. They should be ashamed of themselves for attacking this young man. Get a life, guys.
Great read. I still feel bad for Brotzman. He's too good a kicker to be remembered for those misses (and yet, that's the life of a kicker).
Just a little experiment: Does anyone on this board remember the name Brent Johnson?
Holiday Bowl!
I don't feel bad for this kid, I think he has done the right thing just move on with your life, its only a game people. This is what wrong with sports in America, fans can be the biggest problem and say and do the dumbest things.
If you are living your hopes, dreams or what ever else through wins or losses, then you are the ones who need some help.
Best day of my life when he missed those FGs. Thanks for the memories!
Wow 26 and 29 yards! Those are only a couple yards longer than PAT's. That's going to sting for a long time. Then again Boise had the whole game to win it.
This Red Sox fan will never forget the bungle job by Buckner!
This guy is the most prolific kicker in BSU / Wac history who had one horrible game. It is not fair to place him as a direct comparison to Bill Buckner or any other pro athlete who choked in a big game. Mr. Rock's article is way off base. As far as I can tell this kid did no worse than the kicker for TCU against the Utes in 2008. As a matter of fact it was not as bad when you consider it cost TCU a BCS game and the conference championship. Boise state was outplayed in that 2nd half, bottom line.
Boise State University and Bronco Nation are both class acts my daughter and son in law were students when this happened. BSU made it clear that they appreciated Kyle and Bronco Nation had events to show their support. The incredible comeback in the Nevada game didn't have the ending that took place in the first Fiesta Bowl but Boise State was probably a better team than Oregon and could well have won against Auburn.
Right on, VOTB! 1979 Holiday Bowl (vs. Indiana). It seems people have been able to let that one go. Hopefully the same can be said for Brotzman (though is name is easier to remember than Johnson).
MJB, you mean the bungle job by the manager who left a guy hobbling on two bad ankles in a game during a defensive situation, don't you?
You mean you remember Buckner's gutty performance and good bat during the rest of the series, don't you?
gonefishin, when are you coming back?

1- Had Boise won that game they very well might have played for a NC.
2- Buckner or other athletes "choke?" Sometimes you win the big game, sometimes you lose it, but players that "choke" are actually IN the game -- which is more than can be said for most fans.
rational
my point is that many players do indeed choke but for rock to set this guy apart saying "not sence Buckner" from others is short sighted and not accurate. I have already given an the example of the tcu kicker but a better example to Buckner would be Scott Norwood who missed a game winning kick in the Super Bowl. Kyle Brotsman is merely the latest in a long line of great kickers that missed big kicks in big games. It happens every year but Rock is making it out to be more than it is.
@Rational
You're on target with the Buckner comment! I watched him make clutch plays with the Dodgers and Red Sox for years before he made that error with those two bad ankles. Too bad a stellar career (and Series) was marred with one bad play....
Several people mentioned Brent Johnson who missed an easy field goal that would have won the Holiday Bowl for BYU many years ago. Apparently he had a hard time getting over it. I'm glad the kid from Boise State is doing better. Don't kid yourself, the whole team lost that game, not just one player. It should never have come down to a field goal anyway.
Kyle is a fine young man. I truly appreciate witnessing his four year contributions to Bronco football success. As I recall, Kyle was originally a walk-on freshman to the BSU football squad from Meridian, ID HS (i.e., a local kid made good).
