@Howard S. Also, if Juice was a "decent" player as a freshman last year playing behind two junior running backs, imagine what he'll do over the next three years? The kid's got a chance to be really special. Go Cougs!

"Utah still has yet to win a National Championship...kind of ironic"
***************

BYU does have a NC... the ironic part is that they did it without 7 ESPN games.

So why all the breathless excitement about 7 ESPN games now?

If BYU is going to meet Bronco's expectations, all they have to do is win... the 7 ESPN games are irrelevant if BYU can't deliver an undefeated season.

As for Quezada, I said he is a decent player. He has yet to prove the can carry the full load, but he is decent. He could even be great.

But he is just one player representing an extremely limited recruiting base. Just one or even a few players like him is not going to measurably improve BYU competitive on-field advantage.

ESPN or 21 to 31 million dollars simply for belonging
ESPN or Knowing the 2nd team in your conference could still be in a bcs game.
ESPN or knowing all PAC 12 bowl games are better than BYU affiliated bowls.

ESPN is my favorite channel but I will see every single Utah game on television or live and every Ute anywhere will be able to see Utah games. BYU's goal is exposure. They got it! Would BYU trade places with Utah? Would Utah trade places with BYU?

"BYU has 5 really strong games this year: Ole Miss, Texas, Utah, TCU, and Oregon State"

I have to add that I think our games against UCF and Hawaii will be tougher than Oregon State and on par with Ole Miss and Utah.

This is a much tougher schedule overall than Utah, TCU or Boise State had when they went undefeated.

An undefeated BYU in 2011 would likely play for a NC. A one loss BYU, if the loss were to a Top 20 TCU or Texas team on the road, would have a shot at a BCS bowl.

I'm excited about the ongoing relationship with Hawaii. That gets BYU back into another fertile recruiting ground. And it gives players a game in the tropics to look forward to. Games in Hawaii, Texas, Florida and California (next year); will open doors to increased talent.

@Howard S. "BYU does have a NC... the ironic part is that they did it without 7 ESPN games."

True...they did it with one, the very first ESPN televised game at a time when there were one or two college football games on a week. Pretty big stuff at the time.

" The 7 ESPN games are irrelevant if BYU can't deliver an undefeated season."

I feel like I'm listening to a broken record. We've already established that BYU has to run the table to have a shot at the national title. Almost every team does.

But saying that 7 ESPN games are irrelevant if BYU doesn't go undefeated is a false statement. BYU's a unique school with a unique mission, something that Bronco has emphasized time and again. The increased exposure helps answer questions and spread the message of what BYU is all about.

And, like I said before, I'll be enjoying watching BYU football in HD on national TV while U fans get to enjoy Bill Reilly on AM 700. But he DOES make it seem like you're actually watching the game...almost :) Go Cougars!

Anyhoo, I'm out for the night. Good bantering back and forth with you, Howard S. It's the stuff that rivalries are made of :)

In all seriousness, it will be exciting to see how the future unfolds for both BYU and Utah. I think we can both agree that both institutions are fabulous, that both football teams are extremely well coached, and that both schools have overachieved with the talent that they've had. All the best to the Utes in their future endeavors (except for Sept. 17th of course :). Go Cougars!

---------------

Today yes, but by January IF you go undefeated you'll have to beat 4 final ranked teams in one year as Utah did in 2008 (#6 #7 #18 #25) in order to make that claim.

Reality... BYU has beat 2 ranked teams since 1996 (#22 TCU 2006 and #18 Utah 2009)... notice no BCS team.

Good luck and good job about earning the 7 ESPN games.

Oh BTW, Pitt has 6 games on national TV (3 ABC and 3 ESPN)... with the raise of hands how many think they'll go undefeated next year with all that national exposure?

Oh good. That's a Saturday. I was worried because Howard S. has stated for almost a year now that all the games would be mid-week and I've got to lead Scouts on Thursdays.

Gee, do you think it might have just been sour grapes on his part?

I just dont get the Cougar Collectives hyper-ventilating excitement over their new-found exposure.

So where is the advantage of 7 or 8 ESPN games?

So why all the breathless excitement about 7 ESPN games now?

Howie, Howie, Howie - seriously? Do you really think anybody is buying this load you're dishing up about BYU's exposure on ESPN being irrelevant? We know Utah doesn't get the same deal so of course, it's not worth anything to anyone else - right? That is the exact definition of sour grapes!

I hate to get preachy, but the quote, "simply for belonging" BYU was left out of the PAC for various reasons, but now it seems like you and they are standing in your Conference, (Great and Spacious Building) Pointing at us and laughing. But don't worry. We know we're a strange and "Peculiar" people. We are the only team in America with a contract with ESPN. We're Independent. So, point and laugh all you want. . . but, great will be your fall. Boy, this independent fruit sure tastes good. Pity that Utah will never taste of it.

Nice having those coattails to hang on to, isn't it? Much nicer receiving recognition for what you've done yourself and earned yourself. I hope you still feel that way when football season rolls around and you can't see your Utes play because they didn't get the ESPN deal that BYU has. By the way, BYU could easily be part of a BCS conference but Utah could never pull off independence.

**********

Honestly no sour grapes here at all. I wouldn't consider for an instant trading the PAC 12 and $30 million dollars for BYU's ESPN games.

Beyond that the story for the same for Utah as it is for BYU... Win and you get to a BCS bowl, maybe the NC game... lose and you go to a second tier bowl.

Seven ESPN games or not, the story is exactly same.

So what's the big deal? Mormons across the globe get to see BYU play? Okay great.

I just don't get the hyper-ventilating, jumping up and down, screaming at the top of your lungs excitement for ESPN games... that's all.

Maybe ESPN satisfies a BYU craving for attention. If that's it... then enjoy... I'd rather be Utah.

Utah beats Top 25 teams at home and loses to mediocre teams at home and on the road - teams like Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico and UNLV.

In the PAC 12 it won't be any different. The Utes will beat UCLA at home, then go on the road and lose to Washington State. Utah hasn't beaten a PAC 10 team with a winning record on the road in over a decade.

It's funny how much stock you put in beating Top 25 teams, but how little stock you put in actually being ranked. Strange, very strange.

Maybe someday you'll figure why BYU, without beating a single ranked team, won a national championship, but Utah, with several wins over Top 25 teams couldn't finish higher than #2/#4.

The answer: national cachet; BYU has it, Utah only thinks they do.

Yes, just ask Ron McBride:

"In the early years, I think BYU felt that they had outgrown the conference and their people were talking about how BYU would go to the Big 12 or the Pac-10. They used to come into the Utah game always talking about who they would be playing in their bowl game.... When we started beating them, they stopped talking about their bowl game."

Now it seems we beat them into the BCS and they've started talking about ESPN... priceless.

Sour grapes means to convince yourself that something, which is of worth, is worthless. That is exactly what you are doing Howard S, lol.

Good luck to the Cougars and Utes this upcoming season!

"But, whatever makes you guys happy. I'd rather play UCLA, USC, Washington, and Arizona in b-ball every year than Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Pepperdine and Portland. It comes down to a matter of preference. "

Im sure they will look forward to playing you too.

Just out of curiosity will the PAC 12 look forward to playing Utah in bball more than the WCC will miss playing Utah in bball?
