Ahhhhh. Just like the good ol' days in the MWC. Oh wait a second. Perhaps not!! Memo to "Commissioner" Thompson: This is a good thing!! ESPN and national recognition/attention is a good thing. Let's see: ESPN coverage vs. MWC "Network." Hmmmmm. Great contract for the WCC!

MichiganCoog,

We're picked to win our PAC 12 division and play in the BCS conference championship game our very first year out of the MWC

RE: Riddles
I wouldn't count on BYU going to the Big 12. The Big 12 (read "Texas") is quite happy with 10 teams. There isn't motivation to expand.

Independence is a great option for BYU. Enjoy it.

Nice dodge, but this is basketball article and the question referred specifically to Utah's basketball prospects for 2011-12, considering how Utah couldn't even beat the WCC bottom dweller, San Diego, last season.

btw,

Utah being picked to win the PAC 12 south this year isn't an endorsement of how good Utah football is going to be, it's an indictment of how bad the PAC 12 south in going to be.

Big diff between "picked" and "won". When you win a National Championship, come talk.

Optimal schedule means a great opportunity for the U to do what you say is expected. I hope they can recover and do just that, after their humiliation at LES this fall.

One publication picked U to win the southern division because it is weak and USC can't participate in the championship game.
The same article predicted Stanford to win the conference championship game by a whole lot of points over TUN.
The rest have them finishing below Arizona, USC and one even below UCLA. It is one thing to be picked but the games still have to be played.

BYU has 7 games scheduled to be televised by the world wide leader in sports their first year as an independent. They have games scheduled with many of the top programs in the country over the next 3+ years with many more to be announced. These games were earned by BYU because of a nationwide reputation as a top school and national respect for BYU. Your team is playing several big schools because they are in a conference that tells the other schools that they have to play with you. Doesn't sound so Rosy for your school with your red glasses off does it. I will look for your post on September 17th.

Conspicuously absent from this story is the answer to the natural questions that are usually included in recent news reports about college sports TV contracts. They are:
How much is ESPN paying the WCC for these rights?
and,
How will the league divide the proceeds?

By not mentioning it, the reporter can only leave us to assume the answer to both questions is "Not enough to mention." So if its only about exposure and not about the (lack of) money then I say, Mission Accomplished.

Chris B-- Go to your ute games and enjoy being the doormat of the conference.

Is this contract costing ESPN anything, or is the WCC/BYU paying for the exposure?

Jimmer paved the way. And he will pave the way for many Cougs and other WCC players in the future to be early NBA draft picks just like he will be. I've heard that by wearing Shape-Ups he has improved his vertical by 1/4 inch and his foul line to foul line time by .84 seconds.

We're not talking Utah basketball here, which nobody, including Utah fans wants to watch (see Huntsman Center last season).

BYU is a marketable basketball product that fans all over the country are interested in watching.

If you're looking for someone to televise Utah basketball, try one of those late night informercial stations.

Where did utah finish last year?

Give it a rest.

We get it. You don't like BYU.

But you can't leave it alone, can you.

Chris B,

The utes will not play a bowl game for at least three years.

"These games were earned by BYU because of a nationwide reputation as a top school and national respect for BYU."

Wow, that couldn't be any further from the truth.

Those games were earned because BYU has millions of members around the world.

That's it. Because BYU has not done anything relevant on the national stage since 1984.

You have one chance to take it back and make a rational comment instead.

"Your team is playing several big schools because they are in a conference that tells the other schools that they have to play with you."

In order to be in the situation you are describing, you have to be INVITED to play in the conference. Utah was, which, by default, means that the other schools in the conference wanted to play Utah. Using a little logic goes a looooooong way, sir.

BYU, on the other hand, was NOT INVITED and, instead, was left on its own.....LOL!

LOL at uteBusters! A once-in-30 years talent comes along and you have a Sweet 16 appearance and suddenly you're a "a marketable basketball product that fans all over the country are interested in watching."

When you suggest that basketball fans all over the country want to watch BYU, are you referring to existing BYU fans or are you suggesting that, after last season, the average NCAA basketball fan has decided that BYU is now a perennial powerhouse?

You're losing it, brah. Your last Sweet 16 appearance before this was....1981.

Why is so there much hate for the MWC and Thompson? Yeah Thompson is probaly one of the worst commissioners ever but just let it go. The affilition with the MWC is over so why is there so much resentment? Every time I read a comment on these boards it's all about how the MWC did this and that. Just seems like there is alot of bad blood between BYU and Utah fans against the MWC.
