Awesome. I love the principles of church welfare that have obviously been used in this state. Providing people with dignity and self worth as well as self reliance is the key to getting people off the streets and back on their feets. They just need a little help to get there. Way to go Utah.
@ McFarland: Fromn the story, "...the collaboration of many different people of different backgrounds and faiths, as well as the creation of programs that provide housing, help with medical issues and other support services have made all the difference to the state's success."
Not to mention, the program Utah is using is a program that was developed and used in other states long before Utah adopted it - and when Utah did decide to do it, there was an extreme amount of opposition to it.
But hey, you go ahead and give the credit where it makes you feel good. Surely all the others who put effort in won't mind being ignored.
Wouldn't it be amazing if this was done on a federal level - state by state? We could see the last of the homeless camps. Sounds fantastic.
The success in SLC is largely due to the good people at The Road Home. Good work with Palmer Court and Rapid Rehousing and the other programs that give people hope! SLC should be proud to have such an awesome organization.
I have worked with the homeless for day labor, and also volunteered with the providers of these services. What I saw was A LOT of self sacrifice and humility in both groups. It is humbling to a Veteran or college graduate to find themselves in these circumstances-- often associated with people that have made personal "corporate" decisions which strips people of opportunity and assets. It breaks families and it breaks people. Why pay an individual $10 an hour when you can get someone for $6.35? The American competitive corporate financial institution not only pushes people down, but also turns good managers into vultures.
The good LDS people of Utah need to learn that it is not ordinances and covenants to get you into The Celestial Kingdom-- the first and great commandment is identified by Christ in Mark 12:28-34. The Church generally, does not understand that of faith, hope and Charity, Charity is the greatest. Only cultivating and developing Charity will one enter the C.K. And that will also end homelessness.
Kalinda,
Anyone outside of the political circles should surely recognize that Governor Herbert has no place for credit in this effort. You are correct, this has occurred upon the shoulders of many warm and compassionate people of vision from many faiths. But Herbert should get not credit-- his hands were not involved (Matt 25: 34-46).
