my prediction: 3 years and Juan Diego will run the table in the big sports.
Where's the link that shows the complete standings? I'm not seeing it in the article...
Bingham is really good. Don't see a decline coming for a long time.
I am not sure 10 points for 1st, 8 for 2nd is fair in some sports, Football it takes at a minimum 11 players to field a team, take track who knows how many. Thinking sports like these deserves more points, than say 10 point for golf or Cross Country where they take the score from 5 individuals to establish a winner.
Interested what the minimum requirements to field a team are? Like to to hear the numbers for Track....
Well done Bengals! Although we are smaller than some schools, we still compete in almost every sport in a tough region. Four state titles, a game that could have gone either way in the state finals of the soccer tournament AND don't forget a state championship in lacrosse! Go Bengals!
Most impressive performance was clearly Highland. This is a school that is one of the smallest 4A schools in the state. Combine that number with numerous english as a second language only kids and you have any even smaller school sports participation-wise (ask 5A schools Granger, Cypress and Hunter how that works for them).
In spite of the numbers, Highland wins both the football and basketball state championships, takes second in Tennis and gets to the semi-finals in Soccer.
What a year.
Way to go MC!
They usually aren't the biggest, fastest, or strongest kids out there but they have heart. The orange and blue definitely deserve this award.
Way to go, Thunder!!!
I think if you took state in Football and Basketball then you should win the title. Oh wait, Highland did that! And they beat Mt. Crest in the finals as well.
@The Dixie Kid
I'm sure everyone who enjoys: Golf, Tennis, Volleyball, Swimming, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, Track, Cross Country, and Soccer would completely agree with you....?
I love football, and basketball as much anyone, but there are more sports out there worth recognizing. Let alone, the entire female sex which you just discredited.
@theofficialcall
Participation is the key. To win the all sports award you have to field teams in all the sports and you have to get kids to participate. Desert Hills had over 60% of its students in at least 2 extra curricular activities. It doesn't matter how many players on any one team but the overall participation in all the sports. Then combine committed coaches and booster clubs with the student athletes you have success. Desert Hills does a great job encouraging students and supporting their efforts and it paid off this year. Hopefully, the culture will continue well into the future. Hats off to the schools administration for fostering that environment.
Sorry, I should have clarified a liitle better. I think only the sports where more then 10 people (excluding family) show up to watch should be counted.
@ yankees27
With Spanish Fork, Pineview, Dixie and Snow Canyon dropping to 3A next year, JD will be compete. But Run the Table in the big sports, Not likely. All 4 of these schools have great Baseball programs and the region 9 schools will hold there own in Football and Basketball. I see it as JD will now have competition.
@The Dixie Kid
I'm not completely sure what high school you attended, but by your standards MC still wins this award. The people at Mountain Crest actually do support their teams. Some of the most exciting (and might I add) packed sporting events I saw were wrestling duals, soccer games, and volleyball matches.
If Football and Basketball are your thing, that's great. MC went to the 4a Semis every year this Senior Class was in high school, and they went to the state championship in bball just last year. So, believe me I love the sports.
Just remember though, it's called an ALL Sports Award
Dixie Kid - you also, with your 10 participant rule, eliminated B-ball, which took one of Highlands championships away. Maybe you should realize that it takes as much to golf, wrestle, swim, etc as it does to play the two big sports. Different skills will be mastered by different individuals. They're different - or the football and B-ball players would do everyting else also. MC has a great all-around program. Go Stangs!
On the track question, in the late 1980's East won the track title with just two athletes scoring, those amazing Stowell brothers who I think entered 8 events combined and won most of them. In Texas, one lone girl who won five events (they were allowed to enter five in Texas) won the state title by herself. Of course, we also need to be real, nobody, except maybe in the Hoosiers movie plays basketball with just five players. In most games 8-10 will take the court and certainly others will play during the season and are needed at practice. And trust me Bingham used more than 11 players to win its state championship football game. I think they mostly platoon so with offense and defense I'm sure that''s 22 minimum and then I'm sure quite a few others play special teams, so it wouldn't surprise me if 30-35 players got on the field for that game and any typical Bingham game I'm sure.
I have grandchildren who have participated in the sports programs in Desert Hills and Mt. Crest. They have been the winners in these sports programs as they have learned self-discipline, hard work, sharing, fair play, and to deal with others in all kinds of situations that arise. Much is made of being "The Winner","The Best", but I feel that regardless of the ranking of each team, my grandchildren have all come out as winners because of the high caliber of Sports Programs they have participated in.However, because I am prejudiced ; GO THUNDER AND GO MUSTANGS!!!!
How does this compare? 1955-56 East High: Football 1st, Basketball 2nd, Baseball 1st, track 1st, baseball 1st, Skiing 1st, tennis 1st, wrestling 1st, golf 1st.
How many points is that? Basketball went undefeated, lost to Jordan with Pearl Pollard and a really great team for the State Championship. East beat Jordan earlier in the year at Jordan. GO LEOPARDS!!!
how is lone peak not second?
Peacemaker, ween't there only 8 to 10 high schools in 1955
